  • This paper provides the possibility of the district cooling system by using a LNG cold thermal energy. A liquefied natural gas provides a plenty of cooling source energy during a gasification of a liquefied natural gas. In recent, an ice thermal storage system is used for cooling a building, and a deep water source cooling system has been introduced as a district cooling system in which is used to cool the office towers and other large buildings in old and new downtown. LNG cooling energy refers to the reuse of a large body of naturally cold fluids as a heat sink for process and comfort space cooling as an alternative of conventional, refrigerant based cooling systems. Coincident with significant clean energy and operating cost savings, LNG cold energy cooling system offers radical reductions in air-borne pollutants and the release of environmentally harmful refrigerants in comparison to the conventional air-conditioning system. This study provides useful information on the basic design concepts, environmental considerations and performance related to the application of LNG cold thermal energy.

  • The principal mode of the transmission of Legionnaires disease is a inthalation of the cooling tower water droplets in which Legionellae exist. As a central cooling system is popularized in many public buildings and large buildings nowadays, the number of cooling towers is rapidly increasing. Therefore the possibility of an outbreak of Legionnaires disease is likely increased. To determine the presence of Legionella in cooling tower water as the first step for the prevention of Legionnaires disease, 48 samples of cooling tower water were taken from 24 buildings in Taegu city in july and september 1987. Three samples out of 24 water samples In September yielded Legionella but it was not isolated in the samples of July. Isolated 3 Legionellas were identified as Legionella peumophila. It seems that Legionella from the cooling tower will be isolated more frequently in late summer than early because central cooling system is stopped operation during winter season which is cool. As based on our survey, Legionnaires disease can occur in Taegu city and if it happens it is most likely due to L. pneumophila.

  • Wind loading is one of important loadings that should be considered in the design of large hyperbolic natural-draught cooling towers. Both external and internal surfaces of cooling tower are under the action of wind loading for cooling circulating water. In the previous studies, the wind loads on the external surface attracted concernedly attention, while the study on the internal surface was relatively ware. In the present study, the wind pressure on the internal surface of a 220 m high cooling tower is measured through wind tunnel testing, and the effect of ventilation rate of the packing layer on internal pressure is a major concern. The characteristics of internal wind pressure distribution and its effect on wind-induced responses calculated by finite element method are investigated. The results indicate that the wind loading on internal surface of the cooling tower behaves remarkable three-dimensional effect, and the pressure coefficient varies along both of height and circumferential directions. The non-uniformity is particularly strong during the construction stage. Analysis results of the effect of internal pressure on wind-induced responses show that the size and distribution characteristics of internal pressure will have some influence on wind-induced response, however, the outer pressure plays a dominant role in the wind-induced response of cooling tower, and the contribution of internal pressure to the response is small.

  • In this paper, an automated design and 3-D modeling system of an axial fan and a boss for cooling towers was developed. API and parametric design Provided by a commercial solid-modeler are engaged to automate modeling process. Design data of the boss are assumed to be given by a user with design experiences while the fan from the fan design program using three-dimensional flow analysis. An algorithm avoiding the interferences between fans and a boss is developed. The design data are registered on the database not only to remove duplicate design but also to transfer the data to ERP system.

  • Scale is formed when hard water is heated or cooled in heat transfer equipments such as heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, cooling towers, boilers, and pipe walls. When scale deposits in a heat exchanger surface, it is traditionally called fouling. The objective of the present study is to investigate the formation of fouling in a heat exchanging system. A lab-scale heat exchanging system is built-up to observe and measure the formation of fouling experimentally. Water analyses are conducted to obtain the properties of HAN river water. In the present study a microscopic observation is conducted to visualize the process of scale formation. Hardness of HAN-river water is higher than that of tap water in Seoul.

  • This paper presents design automation system using API and parametric modeling of solid modeler, which is applied on axial fans for cooling towers. The design data including chord length and twist angle according to the fan length are given by design program, and API functions are applied to automate the modeling and assembly process of fan blade. The boss to connect fan and motor is designed with parametric design function provided by UG so as to be flexibly changed by the value of design parameters. The process of generating 2-D drafting for parts and an assembly is also automated. With developed system, the modeling time is reduced to 5 minutes even with unskilled operators.

  • In this paper, an integrated system of optimal design, performance evaluation, and die design and manufacturing of axial fans for cooling tower is presented. The design and performance evaluation are developed based on three dimensional flow analysis so as to ensure low noise and high efficiency. The methodologies are implemented on computer as a GUI system including 3-D surface modeling and 2-D drawing file output modules. The CAD/CAM system is engaged to design the die and generate NC tool path, but the processes are also automated and integrated into the system by means of a part program coded from the design data. It is shown that the newly developed fans have superior performance and shortened lead-time compared to the existing dead-copied fans.

  • Falling film heat transfer has been widely used in many applications in which heat and mass transfer occur simultaneously, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, absorption chillers, etc. In such cases, it is desirable that the falling film spreads widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface and to reduce the thermal resistance across the film and/or the flow resistance to the vapor stream over the film. In this work, the surface is treated to have thin porous layer on the surface. With this treatment, the liquid can be spread widely on the surface by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. In addition to this, the liquid can be held within the porous structure to improve surface wettedness regardless of the surface inclination. The experiment on the evaporative cooling of an inclined surface has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the surface treatment. It is measured that the evaporative heat transfer increases about $50\%$ by the porous layer treatment as compared with that from orignal bare surfaces.

  • An outbreak of Pontiac fever was reported in Seoul in 1984, but legionnaires disease was not known in Korea yet. Our knowledge on the presence or abscence of Legionella in cooling tower. which is the main source of the infection. is very limited. In this study an attempt was made to determine the presence of Legionella in cooling towers during June-September. and in the sputum specimens for routine bacteria culture, which was taken during July-August 1985. Among the 83 water samples 6 yielded L. pneumophila serogroup 1, while none of the 189 sputum samples yielded growth of Legionella. It is concluded that legionellosis can occur in Korea and if it happens it is most likely due to L. pneumophila serogroup 1.
