  • In this study, the cooling performance of a liquid CPU cooler using the water/propylene glycol(PG)-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids is experimentally investigated. Water/PG-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids are manufactured by two-step method with ultrasonic energy for 10 hours. The volume fractions of the nanofluids are 0.25% and 0.35%. Thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluids are measured to theoretically predict the thermal performance of the liquid CPU cooler using performance factor. Performance factor results indicate that the cooling performance of the liquid CPU cooler can be improved using the manufactured nanofluids. To evaluate the cooling performance of the liquid CPU cooler experimentally, temperature differences between ambient air and heater are measured for base fluid and nanofluids respectively. Based on the results, it is shown that performance of the liquid CPU cooler using $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids is improved maximum up to 8.6% at 0.25 Vol.%.

  • Conjugate heat transfer of an automotive oil cooler with offset-strip fins was numerically investigated to predict the performance of the oil cooler for various flow-rates. The simulations were conducted by directly modeling offset-strip fins with unstructured meshes. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were used for the present simulations. Heat transfer characteristics of the oil cooler was compared well with experimental results and the errors were approximately within 5 percents. It was found that the performance of the oil cooler increased as the flow-rate increased up to the flow-rate of 12 L/min, but the performance seemed to be saturated beyond a critical flow-rate, which was estimated as 15 L/min. Furthermore, it was confirmed that compared to the performance without fins, that of the oil cooler with offset-strip fins was increased by about 75 percents.

  • A theoretical analysis on the heat and mass transfer in an evaporative cooler is presented in this work. The evaporative cooler is modeled as a channel filled with porous media the interstitial surface of which is covered by thin water film. Assuming that the Lewis number is unity and the water vapor saturation curve is linear, exact solutions to the energy and vapor concentration equations are obtained. Based on the exact solutions, the characteristics of the heat and mass transfer in the evaporative cooler are investigated. The comparison of the cooling performance between the evaporative cooler and the usual sensible heat exchanger is also carried out. Obviously, the evaporative heat exchanger shows better cooling performance than the sensible heat exchanger. This is due to the latent heat of water vaporization, which results in apparent increases both in the interstitial heat transfer coefficient and the specific heat of the air stream in the evaporative cooler.

  • The Korean summer is hot and humid, and air-conditioners consume considerable amounts of electricity. In such cases, the simultaneous use of indirect evaporative coolers may help reduce the sensible heat and save electricity. In this study, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of indirect or regenerative evaporative coolers made from plastic/paper are investigated. The results showed that heat and mass transfer model based on the ${\epsilon}-NTU$ method predicted the indirect evaporation efficiencies, cooling capacities and pressure drops adequately. Both for indirect or regenerative evaporative cooler, the indirect evaporation efficiency increased with increasing dry channel inlet temperature or relative humidity. The indirect evaporation efficiency of the regenerative evaporative cooler was larger than that of the indirect evaporative cooler.

  • Regenerative evaporative cooling is known as an environment-friendly and energy efficient cooling method. A regenerative evaporative cooler (REC) consisting of dry and wet channels is able to cool down the air stream below the inlet wet-bulb temperature. In the regenerative evaporative cooler, the cooling effect is achieved by redirecting a portion of the air flown out of the dry channel into the wet channel and spraying water onto the redirected air. In this study, a horizontal regenerative cooler is considered. In the horizontal regenerative cooler, the flow direction of evaporating water has a right angle to the flow direction of supply air. This difference was investigated with visualization technique and simplified 2-module performance test was done in a thermo-environment chamber. Optimum design configuration is changed due to the wet channel which are easily fully covered with evaporating water and block the air flow inside the channel. Applying the optimized fin configuration design with the highly wetting surface treatment, a regenerative evaporative cooler was fabricated and tested to Identify the cooling performance improvement and operation characteristics. From the experimental results at the intake condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50% RH, the supply temperature was measured to be around $23.4^{\circ}C$. The cooling effectiveness based on the inlet dewpoint temperature was evaluated 73% which is almost close to the design expectation.

  • The regenerative evaporation water cooler is devised and analysed in this study. The regenerative evaporation water cooler is composed of a sensible heat exchanger to cool the incoming air, followed by a latent heat exchanger to cool the water evaporatively with the cooled air flowing out of the sensible heat exchanger. By linearizing psychrometric characteristics, the heat and mass transfer in the regenerative evaporation water cooler is analyzed theoretically. The results show that the water can be cooled down even lower than the wet-bulb temperature of the inlet air. When the inlet air is $32^{\circ}C$ and 20% in relative humidity, and the inlet temperature of the water is $20^{\circ}C$, the regenerative evaporation water cooler provides a larger cooling capacity than the conventional evaporation water cooler if the effectiveness of the latent heat exchanger is higher than 0.6 and that of the sensible heat exchanger is higher than 0.5.

  • The purpose of this analytic study is to design and examine an efficient hydrogen liquefaction cycle by using a pre-cooler. The liquefaction cycle is primarily comprised of a pre-cooler and a refrigerator. The fed hydrogen gas is cooled down from ambient temperature (300 K) to the pre-cooling coolant temperature (either 77 K or 120 K approximately) through the pre-cooler. There are two pre-cooling methods: a single pre-coolant pre-cooler and a cascade pre-cooler which uses two levels of pre-coolants. After heat exchanging with the pre-cooler, the hydrogen gas is further cooled and finally liquefied through the refrigerator. The working fluids of the potential pre-cooling cycle are selected as liquid nitrogen and liquefied natural gas. A commercial software Aspen HYSYS is utilized to perform the numerical simulation of the proposed liquefaction cycle. Efficiency is compared with respect to the various conditions of the heat exchanging part of the pre-cooler. The analysis results show that the cascade method is more efficient, and the heat exchanging part of the pre-coolers should have specific UA ratios to maximize both spatial and energy efficiencies. This paper presents the quantitative performance of the pre-cooler in the hydrogen liquefaction cycle in detail, which shall be useful for designing an energy-efficient liquefaction system.

  • Cold start driving cycles exhibit an increases in friction losses due to the low temperatures of metal components and media compared to the normal operating engine conditions. These friction losses are adversely affected to fuel economy. Therefore, in recent years, various techniques for the improvement of fuel economy at cold start driving cycles have been introduced. The main techniques are the upward control of coolant temperature and the fast warm-up techniques. In particular, the fast warm-up techniques are implemented with the coolant flow-controlled water pump and the WHRS (waste heat recovery system). This paper deals with an effect of fast ATF (automatic transmission fluid) warm-up on fuel economy using a recovery system of EGR gas waste heat in a diesel engine. On a conventional diesel engine, two ATF coolers have been connected in series, i.e., an air-cooled ATF cooler is placed in front of the condenser of air conditioning system and a water-cooled one is embedded into the radiator header. However, the new system consists of only a water-cooled heat exchanger that has been changed into the integrated structure with an EGR cooler to have the engine coolant directly from the EGR cooler. The ATF cooler becomes the ATF warmer and cooler, i.e., it plays a role of an ATF warmer if the temperature of ATF is lower than that of coolant, and plays a role of an ATF cooler otherwise. Chassis dynamometer experiments demonstrated the fuel economy improvement of over 2.5% with rapid increase in the ATF temperature.

  • A study has been conducted to develop an aluminum EGR cooler for the LPL EGR system of a diesel engine. Aluminum has a much lower density and thermal conductivity that is about 12 times or more than that of stainless steel, so it is advantageous for use in an EGR cooler for weight reduction and cooling performance effects. A design process has been carried out to ensure heat dissipation performance in a restricted space to investigate the geometric parameters and satisfy the requirements for pressure drops at both fluid sides. The tubes of exhaust gas have been designed as extruded tubes. An aluminum EGR cooler consisting of extruded tubes entails a simpler manufacturing process compared to a stainless steel EGR cooler with conventional heat transfer fins. A prototype has been manufactured from the final model selected through the design process. The performance of the aluminum EGR cooler was evaluated and compared with that of the conventional one. The weight of the aluminum EGR cooler is reduced by 22.9%, while performance is significantly improved.
