Intelligent Tuning of the Two Degrees-of-Freedom Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller On the Distributed Control System for Steam Temperature Control of Thermal Power Plant

  • In the thermal power plant, there are six manipulated variables: main steam flow, feedwater flow, fuel flow, air flow, spray flow, and gas recirculation flow. There are five controlled variables: generator output, main steam pressure, main steam temperature, exhaust gas density, and reheater steam temperature. Therefore, the thermal power plant control system is a multinput and output system. In the control system, the main steam temperature is typically regulated by the fuel flow rate and the spray flow rate, and the reheater steam temperature is regulated by the gas recirculation flow rate. However, strict control of the steam temperature must be maintained to avoid thermal stress. Maintaining the steam temperature can be difficult due to heating value variation to the fuel source, time delay changes in the main steam temperature versus changes in fuel flow rate, difficulty of control of the main steam temperature control and the reheater steam temperature control system owing to the dynamic response characteristics of changes in steam temperature and the reheater steam temperature, and the fluctuation of inner fluid water and steam flow rates during the load-following operation. Up to the present time, the Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller has been used to operate this system. However, it is very difficult to achieve an optimal PID gain with no experience, since the gain of the PID controller has to be manually tuned by trial and error. This paper focuses on the characteristic comparison of the PID controller and the modified 2-DOF PID Controller (Two-Degrees-Freedom Proportional-Integral-Derivative) on the DCS (Distributed Control System). The method is to design an optimal controller that can be operated on the thermal generating plant in Seoul, Korea. The modified 2-DOF PID controller is designed to enable parameters to fit into the thermal plant during disturbances. To attain an optimal control method, transfer function and operating data from start-up, running, and stop procedures of the thermal plant have been acquired. Through this research, the stable range of a 2-DOF parameter for only this system could be found for the start-up procedure and this parameter could be used for the tuning problem. Also, this paper addressed whether an intelligent tuning method based on immune network algorithms can be used effectively in tuning these controllers.

  • In recent years, there are increasing threats of rootkits that undermine the integrity of a system by manipulating OS kernel. To cope with the rootkits, in Vigilare, the snoop-based monitoring which snoops the memory traffics of the host system was proposed. Although the previous work shows its detection capability and negligible performance loss, the problem is that the proposed design is not acceptable in recent commodity mobile application processors (APs) which have become de facto the standard computing platforms of smart devices. To mend this problem and adopt the idea of snoop-based monitoring in commercial products, in this paper, we propose a snoop-based monitor design called S-Mon, which is designed for the AP platforms. In designing S-Mon, we especially consider two design constraints in the APs which were not addressed in Vigilare; the unified memory model and the crossbar switch interconnect. Taking into account those, we derive a more realistic architecture for the snoop-based monitoring and a new hardware module, called the region controller, is also proposed. In our experiments on a simulation framework modeling a productionquality device, it is shown that our S-Mon can detect the rootkit attacks while the runtime overhead is also negligible.

  • In this paper, the authors propose a new approach to control a barge type surface vessel. It is based on the Dynamic Positioning System(DPS) design. The main role of barge ship is to carry and supply the materials to the floating units and other places. To carry out this job, it should be positioned in the specified area. However sometimes the thrust systems are installed on it, and in general the rope control by mooring winch system is used. It may be difficult to compare the control performances of two types. If we consider this problem in point of usefulness, we can easily find out that the winch control system is more useful and applicable to the real field than the thrust control system except a special use. Therefore, in this paper we consider a DPS design problem which can be extended to the many application fields. The goal of this paper is twofold. First, the sliding mode controller (SMC) for positioning the our vessel is proposed. Especially, in this paper, a robust stability condition is given based on descriptor system representation. In the result, the sliding mode control law guarantees to keep the vessel in the defined area in the presence of environmental disturbances. And second, the thrust allocation problem is solved by using redistributed pseudo-inverse (RPI) algorithm to determine the thrust force and direction of each individual actuator. The proposed approach has been simulated with a supply vessel model and found work well.

  • Difficulties of the level control in the steam generator are increased due to their nonlinear characteristics. Futhermore, parameter uncertainties of the steam generator is related with control performance and stability. The efficiency of digital conversion in control systems is proved in many recent researches. In order to solve this problem, this paper suggests robust digital fuzzy controller design methodologies of the steam generator which have unstable parameters. Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model is used to construct a fuzzy model which has uncertainties in the steam generator. In designing procedure, intelligent digital redesign method is used to control the nonlinear system. This digital controller keeps the performance of the analog controller. Simulation examples are included for ensuring the proposed control method.

  • Recent studies have discovered that a conventional passive isolation system may suffer from an excessive isolator displacement when subjected to a near-fault earthquake that usually has a long-period velocity pulse waveform. Semi-active isolation using variable friction dampers (VFD), which requires a suitable control law, may provide a solution to this problem. To control the VFD in a semi-active isolation system more efficiently, this paper investigates experimentally the possible use of a control law whose control logic is similar to that of the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) widely used in the automobile industry. This ABS-type controller has the advantages of being simple and easily implemented, because it only requires the measurement of the isolation-layer velocity and does not require system modeling for gain design. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the isolation period, which usually decides the isolation efficiency. In order to verify its feasibility and effectiveness, the ABS-type controller was implemented on a variable-friction isolation system whose slip force is regulated by an embedded piezoelectric actuator, and a seismic simulation test was conducted for this isolation system. The experimental results demonstrate that, as compared to a passive isolation system with various levels of added damping, the semi-active isolation system using the ABS-type controller has the better overall performance when both the far-field and the near-fault earthquakes with different PGA levels are considered.

  • The PID controller type autopilot is applied to support shipmaneuvering for course-keeping and heading control. A control constants of autopilot system should be evaluated by promoting energy loss (fuel consumption) from the view point of economic efficiency of the ship. This paper is obtained control constants of autopilot system from the RCGA pursued the minimum energy loss. In addition, the controller which is designed involves a constrained optimization problem. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated through a set of simulation.

  • This study presents an approach for designing a vehicle rollover prevention controller using differential game theory and multi-level programming. The rollover prevention problem can be modeled as a non-cooperative zero-sum two-player differential game. A controller as an equilibrium solution of the differential game guarantees the worst-case performance against every possible steering input. To obtain an equilibrium solution to the differential game with a small amount of computational effort, a multi-level programming approach with a relaxation procedure is used. To cope with the loss of maneuverability caused by the active suspension, an electronic stability program (ESP) is adopted. Through simulations, the proposed method is shown to be effective in obtaining an equilibrium solution of the differential game.

  • The present study investigated the tracking system of a reflector to trace the movement of sun. The system was designed to minimize the error between the vertical vector of reflector and the position of sun. The proposed system was able to collect the sun lights at a point as a useful source of light energy and transmit the collected light to a remote area through optical fibers. Also the study successfully solved the controller design problem due to the complexity of modeling of the sun tracking system using a fuzzy logic controller which mimics human reasoning.

  • We consider the robust control problem for non-minimum phase(NMP) systems with parametric uncertainty. First, a new method that translates such an uncertain NMP system into a interval family of minimum phase(MP) transfer functions followed a time delay term in the form of Pade' approximation is presented. The controller to be proposed consists of a compensator with Smith predictor structure, so that it can compensate the time delay behaviour due to NMP plant. Therein, the main feedback controller for a family of MP plants has been designed by using quantitative feedback theory(QFT) such that satisfies the robust stability against the structured uncertainty. The stability and performance of overall system are examined through an illustrative example.

  • In the AMP(Asymmetric Multiprocessing) based dual core using core-specific operating system in a single processor system, shared memory method is used to send data between processors in dual core. To used shared memory in different operating systems, there is a problem of needing to solving the issue of message communication and synchronization between the two operations systems. In this paper, separate memory controller was used for data sharing between different processor cores in dual core environment. This controller can designate two slave ports to allow simultaneous access from two processors, and in the case of process data simultaneously by two processors, priority order of slave ports is determined through memory mediator. When sending data from A to B processor, SRAM area was logically separated into 8 pages. It allowed using memory area from multiple processes with the size of 4KByte per page, and control register with the size of 4Byte was used to discern the usability of current page.
