  • Dynamic characteristics of tall building structures with double negative stiffness damped outriggers (2NSDO) are parametrically studied using the theoretical formula. Compared with one negative stiffness damped outrigger (1NSDO), 2NSDO can achieve a similar maximal modal damping ratio with a smaller negative stiffness ratio. Besides, the 2NSDO can improve the maximum achievable damping ratio to about 30% with less consumption of an outrigger damping coefficient compared with the double conventional damped outriggers (2CDO). Besides, the responses of structures with 2NSDO under fluctuating wind load are investigated by time-history analysis. Numerical results show that the 2NSDO is effective in reducing structural acceleration under fluctuating wind load, being more efficient than 1NSDO.

  • The distributed-parameter structures expressed with the partial differential equations are considered as the infinite-dimensional dynamic system. For implementation of a controller in multivariate systems, it is necessary to derive the state-space reduced order model. By the eigensystem realization algorithm, we can yield tile subspace system with the Markov parameters derived from the measured frequency response function by the inverse discrete Fourier transformation. We also review the necessary conditions for the convergence of the approximation system and the error bounds in terms of the singular values of Markov-parameter matrices. To determine the natural frequencies and modal damping ratios, the modal coordinate transformation is applied to the realization system. The vibration test for a smart structure is performed to provide the records of frequency response functions used in the subspace system realization.

  • The concept of meta-material-based isolation systems (MMIS) for structural columns has been revisited in the present study in order to enhance the stability of rubber pads by using steel shim reinforced rubber (SSRR) layers. Analytical calculations have shown a significant improvement in the stability of MMIS with SSRR pads. Finite element analysis has also been conducted to further show the reduced response of a bridge with the modified MMIS under excitations having frequencies within the corresponding attenuation zone (AZ) as compared to the response of a conventional bridge without MMIS. FE analysis further shows the stress generated on the bridge with MMIS systems are within safe limits. Finally, a generalized procedure has been developed to design bridge columns with the proposed modified MMIS.

  • This paper develops the theory for a novel fault-tolerant, permanent magnet biased, 6-active-pole, homopolar magnetic bearing. The Lagrange Multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrices for the failed bearing. some numerical examples of distribution matrices are provided to illustrate the new theory. Simulations show that very much the same dynamic responses (orbits or displacements) are maintained throughout failure events (up to any combination of 3 coils failed for the 6 pole magnetic bearing) while currents and fluxes change significantly. The overall load capacity of the bearing actuator is reduced as coils fail. The same magnetic forces are then preserved up to the load capacity of the failed bearing.

  • This paper deals with pressure ripple and noise reduction characteristics for a hydrostatic transmission(HST) consisting of a variable axial piston pump connected in an open loop to a fixed displacement axial piston motor. Pressure ripples in HST is major source of vibration, which can lead to fatigue failure of components and cause noise. In order to reduce the pressure ripple, an annular tube type hydraulic filter proposes to absorb pressure ripples with the high frequencies components to achieve better noise attenuation in HST. The basic principle tube is applied to propagation of pressure wave, reflection, absorption in cross section of discontinuity and resonance in the hydraulic pipeline. It is experimently confirmed that a hydraulic filter is absorbed to be about 30∼40dB of pressure ripple with high frequencies. These results will assist in modeling and design of noise reduction in hydraulic control systems, and here, should provide a means of designing a quieter HST.

  • In this study, experiments were conducted to visualize and analyze the dynamic characteristics of splash and residual liquid film formation during and after the injection of water droplets onto vertically situated solid substrates with varying surface wettability, elasticity, and microtexture. As wettability decreased (higher contact angle), more splash droplets formed, and the residual liquid film decreased. Low contact angles resulted in thin residual films and less splash. Surface elasticity absorbed the impact forces of droplets, thereby decreasing splash phenomena and significantly reducing the formation of residual liquid films due to surface vibration. Surfaces with microtextures demonstrated control over droplet splash direction, guiding the liquid along desired pathways. High-speed imaging provided detailed insights, showing that surface properties critically influence splash dynamics and residual liquid film formation.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate design parameters of a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD), which is affected by various excitation amplitudes, through shaking table test. Design parameters of a TLCD are examined based on the equivalent tuned mass damper(TMD) model of a TLCD, in which the nonlinear damping of a TLCD is transposed to equivalent viscous damping. Shaking table test is carried out for a TLCD specimen subjected to harmonic waves with various amplitudes. Transfer functions are ratios of liquid displacement of TLCD and control force produced by a TLCD, respectively, with respect to the acceleration excited by a shaking table. They are derived based on the equivalent TMD model of a TLCD. Then, the variation of design parameters according to the excitation amplitude is examined by comparing analytical transfer functions with experimental ones. Finally, the dissipation energy due to the damping of a TLCD, which is experimentally observed from the shaking table test, is examined according to the excitation amplitude. Comparisons between test results and analytical transfer functions showed that natural frequencies of TLCD and the ratio of the liquid mass in a horizontal column to the total liquid mass does not depend on the excitation amplitude, while the damping ratio of a TLCD increases with larger excitation amplitudes.

  • The vehicle loading test under the strict traffic control is generally carried out as a present practice in an evaluation process of the bearing capacity of a bridge. The quasi-static load test is recently proposed to mitigate the traffic condition of test, and analyze the disturbed acceleration time-history data of free vibration due to the ambient traffic on the bridge by Fourier transform to calculate only the natural frequencies of the bridge. The calculated frequencies have some errors due to the analysis technique as well as the influence of ambient traffic loads, and in addition to it is cumbersome to obtain the free vibration data during a quasi-static load test. In this study, the wavelet transform technique using Morlet wavelet is used to analyze the acceleration data recorded during a quasi-static load test on a bridge and calculate the natural frequencies and the modal damping ratios of the bridge. The study results show that the wavelet transform technique is a reliable and reasonable method to analyze test data and obtain the natural frequencies and the modal damping ratios of a bridge regardless of the data types i.e. free or forced vibrations.

  • The most effective way of the rock removing works in the downtown area is to removing rocks by splitting the rock by blasting with small amount of explosives in the hole. However environmental factors not only limit the applications but also increase the forbidden area. As this is a distributed multi-stage blasting method and to reduce vibration by applying the optimized precisioncontrol-blasting method, it is applicable in all situations. The process is to fix the stemming-help plastic sheet to the hole entrance when stemming explosives and insert detonator and explosive primer with same delay time, two or three sets. This method is more efficient in the downtown area where claims and dispute from vibration are expected. This method is easily usable by designing blast pattern even in the area where delay time blasting is difficult after multi-stage explosive stemming due to short length of blast hole (1.2~3.0m) and there is no detonator wire shortage or dead-pressure.
