Active Vibration Control Using Piezostack Based Mount (압전작동기 마운트를 이용한 능동진동제어)

  • This paper presents active vibration control performance of a hybrid mount. The proposed hybrid mount is devised by adopting both piezostack as an active actuator and rubber as a passive element. After experimentally identifying actuating force characteristics of the piezostack and dynamic characteristics of the rubber, the hybrid mount was designed and manufactured. Subsequently, a vibration control system with a specific mass loading is constructed, and its governing equations of motion are derived. In order to actively attenuate vibration transmitted from the base, a feedforward controller is formulated and experimentally realized. Vibration control responses are then evaluated in time and frequency domains.

  • This work presents experimental results on vibration control of flexible structures using the squeeze mode electrorheological(ER) mount. An appropriate size of the squeeze mode ER mount is devised and its field-dependent damping force characteristics are experimentally evaluated. The ER mount is then applied to two different flexible structures : beam structure and frame structure. An optimal controller associated with displacement and acceleration signals is designed to suppress the imposed vibration and experimentally realized using the microprocessor. Vibration control responses of the flexible structures such as acceleration are evaluated in time and frequency domains.

  • This paper presents the replication of a desired vibration response by iterative learning control (ILC) system for a vibration motion replication actuator. The vibration motion replication actuator has parameter uncertainties including system nonlinearity and joint nonlinearity. Vehicle manufacturers worldwide are increasingly relying on road simulation facilities that put simulated loads and stresses on vehicles and subassemblies in order to reduce development time. Road simulation algorithm is the key point of developing road simulation system. With the rapid progress of digital signal processing technology, more complex control algorithms including iterative learning control can be utilized. In this paper, ILC algorithm was utilized to produce simultaneously the six channels of desired responses using the Stewart platform composed of six linear electro-magnetic actuators with Halbach magnet array. The convergence rate and accuracy showed reasonable results to meet the requirement. It shows that the algorithm is acceptable to replicate multi-channel vibration responses.

  • Active control is regarded as one of the most efficient and economic countermeasures to reduce excessive vibration of ship superstructure. However, it is difficult to find its practical application in real ships in spite that many studies on such systems have been done. In this study, for the practical use of an active control system to reduce ship superstructure vibration, we have developed an active vibration compensator consisting of a mechanical actuator having compact size and expected lifetime over 20 years, its control panel including exclusive signal processing and computing board, sensors to detect phase and vibration, and its operation software providing various user-interface functions. From the performance verification test of the system at a 5,500 TEU container carrier, we have confirmed the system could reduce ship superstructure vibration of a harmonic component of main engine rotating frequency up to 0.1 mm/s.

Damping Applications of Ferrofluids: A Review

  • Ferrofluids are a special category of smart nanomaterials which shows normal liquid behavior coupled with superparamagnetic properties. One of the earliest and most prospective applications of ferrofluids is in damping, which has prominent advantages compared with conventional damping devices: simplicity, flexibility and reliability. This paper presents the basic principles that play a major role in the design of ferrofluid damping devices. The characteristics of typical ferrofluid damping devices including dampers, vibration isolators, and dynamic vibration absorbers are compared and summarized, and then recent progress of vibration energy harvesters based on ferrofluid is briefly described. Additionally, we proposed a novel ferrofluid dynamic vibration absorber in this paper, and its damping efficiency was verified with experiments. In the end, the critical problems and research directions of the ferrofluid damping technology in the future are raised.

  • This paper presents vibration control performance of active engine mount system installed with the magneto-rheological (MR) mount and the piezostack mount. The performance is evaluated via hardware-in-the-loop-simulation(HILS) method. As a first step, six degrees-of freedom dynamic model of an in-line four-cylinder engine which has three points mounting system is derived by considering the dynamic behaviors of MR mount and piezostack mount. As a second step, sliding mode controller(SMC) is synthesized to actively control the imposed vibration In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed active engine mount, vibration control performances are evaluated under various engine operating speeds (wide frequency range) using HILS method and presented in time and frequency domain.

After describing the configuration of the proposed mount, vibration control performances are experimentally evaluated. A mount system with four active hybrid mounts is then constructed. To attenuate vibrations on the supported mass, a frequency-shaped sliding mode controller is designed and implemented to the system. Finally, control performances are obtained and presented in time and frequency domains via computer simulation.

  • This paper presents vibration control performance of a passenger vehicle featuring magneto-rheological (MR) suspension units. As a first step, a cylindrical shock absorber is designed and manufactured on the basis of Bingham Property of a commercially available MR fluid. After verifying that the damping force of the shock absorber can be controlled by the intensity of magnetic field(or input current), it is applied to a full-car model. An optimal controller is then formulated to effectively suppress unwanted vibration of the vehicle system. The control performances are evaluated via hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS), and presented in both time and frequency domains.
