  • In this paper, we proposed an air bearing stage with active magnetic preloads in vertical directions compensating motion errors and attenuating vibrations to improve dynamic characteristics. This preloaded design gives simpler configuration of the stage, and active control of preload can be used for compensating motion errors by feedforward method. To improve dynamic characteristics, vibration of the table is monitored by an accelerometer, and controlled by a DSP based digital controller with integrator and band pass filters for suppressing roll and pitch vibration modes. The modes were evaluated by measuring frequency response functions, and compared with compensated responses. This showed effective results for suppressing poorly damped regenerative vibration of air bearings.

  • Sound intensity techniques and ODS(Operational Deflection Shape) techniques are applied to identify the acoustic noise source of a hard disk drive and its control system. The sound intensity is used to visualize the noise source locations, and the ODS information to visualize the vibration pattern and to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the noise sources. The measurement systems are customized to accurately measure the sound intensity and ODS distributions of HDD system in space domains as well as frequency domains. The measurement systems for the sound absorption and transmission loss of materials are also used to support the background data for the efficient noise control. Using the visual information of source locations and its dynamic characteristics, the partial noise barrier structure and optimum absorption are designed and its controlled sound power level is proved to be under 3.1 Bel(Idle)/3.3Bel (Seek) which is the lowest level in the disk drive industry.

  • As the various industrial machinery has come into being by development of industrial technology, the productivity of the basic industrial machinery has improved. However, at the same time, noise from various industrial machinery disturbs the quiet environment. There are 35 kinds of the noise emission machinery defined in the noise and vibration control act according to the horse power and the number of machinery. These were classified in 1992, and the characteristics of the noise emission machinery may be different from the past one. So we need to investigate the characteristics of the noise emitted by machinery to control it rightly. We measured sound intensity of 32 noise emission machinery to calculate the sound power levels of those and investigated the characteristics of the sound power level of those according to the frequency. We found that the forging machine, concrete pipe and pile making machine, sawing machine, etc. are noisy. The generator, the concrete pipe and pile making machine, etc. emit the low frequency noise, but the molding machine, the stone cutter, the metal cutter, etc. emit the high frequency noise.

  • This paper presents dynamic characteristics of a new actuator using magneto-rheological(MR) fluid between two electrode type coils. The concept of the actuator is to strengthen the force due to the magnetic field produced by the electrode-coil for MR fluid. The amount and direction of current input to the electrode-coils decide the characteristics of contraction-mode and extension-mode. For achieving the required actuating displacement and actuating force, the yield stress of the MR fluid between two electrode-coils is precisely changed by the input current. In this work, the MR fluid is operated in squeeze mode. The experimental results shown in this paper depict that it can be applied in the micro-level displacement and vibration control system.

  • The operation of surface and edge finishing is the last and essential process of parts machining, because a product is completed as an assembly. Therefore, the quality of the finished parts has a direct effect upon the performance of the product. Especially, the edge quality depending on the burr control process is very important. A number of deburring processes have been developed for macro burrs such as barreling, brushing, chemical methods, etc. However, micro burr removal when piercing a very thin plate is very difficult, because this badly deteriorates the surface quality of the processed part. When ultrasonic wave is propagated in liquids, it forms an infinitude of micro bubbles. These bubbles generate extremely strong force, which removes micro burrs. In ultrasonic micro deburring, the problem is that burrs are not removed completely, because only components of the explosive force directly act on the burrs, which is not enough. An attempt was made to remove the burrs using ultrasonic vibration in water with SiC as an abrasive agent. Because of the abrasive, smoother edges have been achieved. There are many control parameters in ultrasonic deburring such as abrasive size, ultrasonic frequency and amplitude, distance between tool and workpiece, tilt angle of workpiece etc. This study focuses on how distance and tilt angle influence deburring effect. A number of experiments for these parameters have been carried out, and then the effect of each parameter analyzed.

  • A particle tuned mass damper (PTMD) system is the combination of a traditional tuned mass damper (TMD) and a particle damper (PD). This paper presents the results of an experimental and analytical study of the damping performance of a PTMD attached to the top of a benchmark model under wind load excitation. The length ratio of the test model is 1:200. The vibration reduction laws of the system were explored by changing some system parameters (including the particle material, total auxiliary mass ratio, the mass ratio between container and particles, the suspending length, and wind velocity). An appropriate analytical solution based on the concept of an equivalent single-unit impact damper is presented. Comparison between the experimental and analytical results shows that, with the proper use of the equivalent method, reasonably accurate estimates of the dynamic response of a primary system under wind load excitation can be obtained. The experimental and simulation results show the robustness of the new damper and indicate that the damping performance can be improved by controlling the particle density, increasing the amount of particles, and aggravating the impact of particles etc.

  • This paper describes three kinds of experiments and analysis of their results related to human tactile sensitivity using an integrated tactile display system. The device can provide vibration, normal pressure and lateral slip/stretch which are important physical quantities to sense texture. We have tried to find out the efficient method of stimulating, limitation of surface discrimination by kinesthetic farce feedback and the effectiveness of the combination of kinesthetic force and tactile feedback. Seven kinds of different stimulating methods were carried out and they are single or combination of the kinesthetic force, normal static pressure, vibration, active/passive shear and moving wave. Both prototype specimen and stimulus using tactile display were provided to all examinees and they were allowed to answer the most similar sample. The experimental results show that static pressure is proper stimulus for the display of micro shape of the surface and vibrating stimulus is more effective for the display of fine surface. And the sensitivities of active touch and passive touch are compared. Since kinesthetic force feedback is appropriate to display shape and stiffness of an object, but roughness display has a limitation of resolution, the concurrent providing methods of kinesthetic and tactile feedback are applied to simulate physical properties during touching an object.

  • This report introduces the structural design of Hibiya Mitsui Tower built in Tokyo Midtown Hibiya. The upper part of this tower is used for offices and the lower portion is for commercial facilities and a cinema complex which need the large open spaces. The 192m-high building has 35 floors above ground and 4 below ground. The structure is a steel frame using CFT columns to feature the high-performance oil dampers and the buckling restrained braces for vibration control. First, an outline of the structural design of this building is presented. Second, we introduce the transfer frame adopted to realize the large open spaces in the lower part, and the long column supporting the corner part of the high-rise building to avoid making a shade on the adjacent Hibiya Park, which are the feature of this building. Finally, we present an outline of the latest highly efficient semi-active oil dampers adopted in this building, and the vibration responses of this tower.

  • Due to the irregular shape and the deviation of stiffness center and gravity center, buildings always suffer from complex surface load and vibration response under wind action. This study is dedicated to analyze the surface wind load and wind-induced response of an irregular building, and to discuss the possibility of top swimming pool as a TLD to diminish wind-induced vibration of the structure. Wind tunnel test was carried out on a hotel with irregular shape to analyze the wind load and structural response under 8 wind incident angles. Then a precise numerical model was established and calibrated through experimental results. The top swimming pool was designed according to the principle of frequency modulation, and equations of motion of the control system were derived theoretically. Finally, the wind induced response of the structure controlled by the pool was calculated numerically. The results show that both of wind loads and wind-induced responses of the structure are significantly different with wind incident angle varies, and the across-wind response is nonnegligible. The top swimming pool has acceptable damping effect, and can be designed as TLD to mitigate wind response.

  • This paper describes an optimal design technology in a segment type vertical guide bearing for vertical rotating machinery. Segment type vertical guide bearings have widely used for vertical rotating machinery, however bearing problems, such as excessive vibration and temperature rise, frequently take place in the actual machine. Such excessive vibration magnitude and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature rise result in serious damage and economic losses. Thus the segment type vertical guide bearing should be designed to get optimal characteristics in order to maintain stable operation without bearing failure due to abnormal vibration and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature. The preload ratio is the most important parameter in designing the segment type vertical guide bearing. Because adjustment of the bearing preload by changing the bearing clearance could easily control both the bearing stiffness and the cooling effect. In the paper, the influence of the preload effects on the bearing metal temperature and the bearing stiffness has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find out an optimum preload ratio. Results show that the segment type vertical guide bearing has an optimum preload ratio at which the bearing stiffness reaches a masimum value while the bearing metal temperature is minimized.
