The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the compensatory nutrition regimen modulates lactation performance and milk protein gene expression in the first and second lactation cycles. Female rats(28 days of age) were assigned to 1)control ad libitum ; 2) stari-step compensatory nutrition(SSCN) regimen an alternating 3-2-3-4-week schedule beginning with an energy restriction diet(40% restriction) for 3 weeks followed by the control diet(ad libitum) for 2 weeks and then alternating another 3-4 week feeding regimen. The SSCN rats were received an overall 20% energy restriction(average from all stair-step periods) compared with the conventionally fed control group. Rats were bred during the first week of the second realimentation. All pups were weaned on day 21 of lactation. About 1 week after weaning all dams were mated for the second pregnancy. Mammary tissues were obtained from pregnant and lactating rats during the first and second lactation cycles. During these lactation cycles the SSCN group had a 11% increase in average lactation performance over that of control. The SSCN group had significantly increased levels of milk protein gene($\alpha$- and $\beta$-casein) expression in mammary tissues during the first lactation cycle compared with those of the control group. During the second lactation period the levels of milk protein gene expression in lactating mammary tissues of the SSCN group were also higher than those of the control group. These results suggest that the effects of compensatory growth imposed at an early age extend to the second lactation cycle with regard to increased lactation performance and milk protein gene expression.
This study was designed to investigate the hypoglycemic effects of Benincasa hispida (Wax gourd) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in the male rats by intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 45 mg/kg dissolved in citrate buffer. The diabetic animals then had plasma glucose concentration of above 300mg/dl. The experimental groups were divided into five groups; normal, STZ-control and three Wax gourd groups (5%, 10% and 20% intake groups). Normal and STZ-control groups were fed on a AIN-93 diet and experimental groups were fed a AIN-93 diet with the Wax gourd powder (5%, 10% and 20%/kg diet) for 4 weeks. The body weight, diet intake and feed efficiency ratio (FER) were monitored. The blood glucose and cholesterol levels were determined everyweek. After 4 weeks, the rats were sacrificed and the levels of glucose, insulin, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and free fatty acids in plasma and levels of glycogen in liver and muscle were analyzed. Diabetic rats showed the lower weight gain compared to the normal rats. The weight gain and feed efficiency ratios in 15 and 20% Wax gourd groups were higher than in STZ-control group. The plasma glucose levels were significantly lower in all Wax gourd groups than in STZ-control group. The plasma insulin levels in diabetic groups were not significantly different compared to the normal group, but the level of 20% Wax gourd group was higher than other diabetic groups. The experimental diabetic groups showed the higher levels of muscle glycogen compared to STZ-control group. The lower levels of plasma cholesterol were noticed in 20% Wax gourd group throughout the experimental period. The plasma level of triglyceride was elevated in STZ-diabetic control and the levels were slightly decreased in Wax gourd groups. Rats of 10% Wax gourd group showed the lower levels of plasma free fatty acids. It is suggested, from the results, that the possibility of therapeutic or preventive use of wax gourd to the diabetes mellitus.
Objetives This experimental study is designed to investigate the effects of kwakhyangjungkisangamibang extract on the changes of adipose tissues, serum insulin and leptin levels in rats induced by a high fat diet. The leptin has been proposed to be involved in the role of food intake and energy expenditure. Methods During the 8 weeks of experimental period, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on the 2 different diets: the normal diet AIN-76A and high fat(beef tallow) diet ad libitum, of which 40% of the calories intake was fat. 9 rats in the control and high fat diet group were killed for the baseline experiment at 4 weeks of age. The high fat diet group was divided into three groups: control group, experimental group I(high fat diet plus kwakhyangjungkisangamibang extract), and experimental group II(high fat diet plus mahuang). The body weight, hypodermal fat tissue, serum lipid profile, insulin and leptin levels were measured after the administration of the high fat diet and extract. Results 1. The body weight was decreased in experimental group II, but there was not a significance difference compared to the control group. 2. The peritoneal, visceral, and hypodermal adipose tissue was decreased in experimental group I, but there was not a significance difference compared to the control group. 3. The lipid profile was decreased in experimental group I, but not in group II. 4. The insulin concentration was increased in experimental group I and II, but there was not a significance difference compared to the control group. 5. The leptin level was increased significantly in experimental group I(p<0.05) and II(p<0.01) compared to the control group. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that kwakhyangjungkisangamibang has an effect on the regulation of obesity.
This study examined the proper roles of dietitian and nurse-teacher in the weight control program (WCP) in schools and the effect of the WCP on subjects with respect to anthropometric measurements, nutrition knowledge, dietary attiude, and behavior changes. The program consisted of six sessions of nutrition education and frequent face-to-face nutrition counseling. Subjects were 22 obese children in the 4th and 5th grade who underwent counseling and 18 obese children in another school who served as a control group. After two months of WCP, obesity index such as .elative body weight (RBW, from 135.7 to 132.5), tricep skinfold thickness (TSFT, from 34.9 to 32.8 mm), and body fat content (from 32.0 to 29.8%) had decreased significantly in the experimental group, while the control group showed no significant differences in these indices. The reductions in obesity indices were maintained in the experimental group except for fat content (32.6%), which returned to its original value within six months. The control group significantly increased fat content in the same period (from 31.2% to 36.2%). Both groups decreased RBW, TSFT, and fat content while midarm circumference and waist/hip ratio remained the same after one year. Subjects' nutrition knowledge was improved with average test scores from 15.1 to 16.7 while nutrition attitude and behavior test scores remained unchanged suggesting that behavior modification may require more time than knowledge acquirement. These results suggest that proper nutrition counseling can initiate weight reduction. However, the maintenance of controlled weight requires changes in attitude and behavior which have not been achieved by the present WCP. The role of school dietitian for WCP in this study was limited to assisting the nurse-teacher in nutrition education. Expansion of dietitian's role in nutrition education and counseling is needed.
We investigated the effects of Mulberry leaves fermented enzyme liquid(MLE) addition on the quality of Kimchi which were fermented at $5^{\circ}C$ during 30 days. MLE was added to salted cabbage at concentrations of 0%(C), 0.4%(MLE1), 0.8%(MLE2), and 1.2%(MLE3) (w/w). pH in Kimchi added upon 1.2% of MLE, was higher than that of Kimchi without MLE after 12 days of fermentation. The titratable acidity was increased by the addition of MLE, and particularly Kimchi added 1.2% of MLE showed the slowest changed level. The degree of salinity were decreased in Kimchi with MLE as well as control group. However, MLE1 showed significantly lower salinity than MLE2, MLE3 and control group (p<0.001). L, a, b values of control group indicated significantly higher than the Kimchi with enzyme liquid concentrations(MLE1~MLE3). As compared with the control group, the cutting force in treated groups were increased during the fermentation period, and especially MLE3 showed the highest value of hardness. Moreover, that growth of lactic acid bacteria and total bacteria were inhibited by the addition of MLE. In the sensory assessment, the color, taste, and overall preferences were higher in MLE2 than control group and MLE1, MLE3. The acceptability of MLE as an additive in Kimchi among middle school students was higher than in the control sample, with an optimum additive of 0.8% MLE, based on the lowest volume of leftovers. Therefore, it was confirmed that addition of 0.8% MLE appears to be an acceptable approach to enhance the quality of Kimchi without reduction of acceptability.
This study applied the fuzzy logic control for the construction of the reservoir operation model which can consider uncertainty of the predicted inflow in determining reservoir release during flood period. The control rule is usually constructed based on the opinion of experts which is a general technique. To improve the drawback of general technique, this study constructed the Fuzzy-Tabu search model automatically established by the fuzzy rule using Tabu search which is a global optimization technique. As the results, the peak release is decreased and the flood control efficiency is improved. The total release is also decreased and this represents the benefit in water use. Consequently, it is confirmed that the effect of flood control can be increased through the constructed model. It also shows that the available water resources after the flood is more increased. So, the proposed Fuzzy-Tabu search model could be better than the actual reservoir operation methodology in the aspect of water use.

This Research is an attempt to find out what effects the resistance exercise program has on the rheumatoid arthritis patient's functional disability and biochemical parameters. The research took place from June to November 1996, and the target included an experimental group of 25 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and a control group of 26 cases of rheumatoid arthritis taken from the Anam Medical Center at Korea University. The resistance exercise program was executed on these patients five times a week during a period of eight weeks. Before and after the experiments, measurements of functional disability score, ESR, CRP, self-efficacy, and family support were taken and closely analysed. The results of this analysis are as follows : 1. After the experiment, the experimental group had less functional disabilities compared to the control group(t=9.11, P=0.0017). 2. After the experiment, the ESR of both the experimental and the control groups decrease, but there was not notable difference between the two groups(t=0.07, P=0.9546). 3. After the experiment, the CRP of both the experimental and the control groups decreased, with no significant different between them(t=0.53, P=0.6022). 4. After the experiment, the self-efficacy of the experimental group increased significantly compared to the control group(t=3.15, P=0.0042), but the self-efficacy had no effect on the actual practice of the program. 5. After the experiment, the family support of the experimental group was higher than of the control group(t=6.33, P=0.0013), but again the family support had no effect on the actual practice of the program. Judging from the results of these experiments, the resistance exercise program not only diminishes rheumatoid arthritis patients' functional disabilities, but also has a great influence on increasing their self-efficacy and family support. Concluding, in diminishing the functional disabilities of rheumatoid arthritis, the resistance exercise program would be appropriate nursing intervention.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of placebo(emotional stimulus) on physical fitness and psychological wellbeing. The subjects for the study were devided into two groups. One experimental group received placebo and the other control group did not receive. Each group was composed of 15 women. The subjects continued aerobic exercise for an hour each time, three times a week, for eight weeks. The enhancement of physical fitness has been evaluated by body weight, BP, pulse rate, skinfold thickness, circumference of waist and hip, body fat, % body fat, lean body mass, % lean body mass they were measured three times every 4 weeks. Also to evaluate the enhancement of psychological wellbeing, the self-esteem and self-perception were measured. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. The % body fat of experimental group decreased significantly than that of control group(p<0.1). 2. The % lean body mass of experimental group decreased significantly than that of control group(p<0.1). 3. There was no significant difference of other physical fitness factors between experimental group and control group. 4. There was no significant difference of self-esteem between experimental group and control group. 5. There was no significant difference of self-perception between experimental group and control group. From these results, it may be concluded that placebo(emotional stimulus) which received during aerobic exercise period is partially effective in the enhancement of the physical fitness.

This paper studies that torque model considered with decaying phase back-EMF is different In conduction and commutation period and analyzes the torque pulsation components mathematically. In this paper, it is proposed a novel method to suppress torque pulsation due to commutation time. First, it propose commutation delay time control method, which is to compensate current slope of rising phase and decaying phase to control commutation time. Current ripple is minimized at non-commutating current and torque ripple is reduced below critical speed range that dc link voltage is the same as four times of back-EMF voltage. However, torque ripple still exists due to the relation with back-EMF and commutating current and it is increased on a large scale above critical speed range, especially. Secondly, proposed method is commutation time control, which is considered with torque pulsation due to the relation of back-EMF and commutating current. Through the proposed method, the torque pulsation can be minimized in the whole speed range as well as range over critical speed.
