A new brown variety of Flammulina velutipes, referred to as 'Asakgold,' was bred by crossing two monokaryons isolated from the "Geumhyang2ho" and "Garlmoe" varieties. The pileus color of the new variety is light brown and its shape is hemispherical. During bottle cultivation, the period necessary for mycelial growth was 40 days, 9 days for primordia formation and 15 days for fruiting body growth. The total cultivation period was 64 days, which was similar to that of the control variety "Yeoreumhyang1ho." The pileus of the new variety was similar and the stipe was thinner and longer than that of the control. The number of valid stipes per bottle was 495, which was 37 % higher than that of the control (362), and the yield was 214 g, 16 % higher than that of the control (185 g). The β-glucan content was 28.69 %, which was observed to be 1.6 times more than that of the control.

Recently, the use of mulching film has increased in soybean cultivation. Polyethylene (PE) films and biodegradable films (BF) have the advantages of improving soil moisture retention, geothermal maintenance, and CO2 maintenance as well providing weed control. Furthermore, BFs are a material that can compensate for the shortcomings of PE because it has the ability to decompose naturally by soil microorganisms, sunlight, and geothermal heat. Many researches have been carrying out studies regarding the development of BFs for these very reasons. This study was conducted better understand which films are optimal for soybean cultivation after evaluations of soybean growth and film characteristics of various BFs. BFs Farmsbio (Farm Hannong), Heulgro Film (Sejin Bio), Vonto Film (Eco-Hansung), two unnamed biodegradable films (Seojin Bio and Taesung), and a PE film were used in this study. For the control plots, no mulching was used. Experimental fields were fertilized according to conventional cultivation methods, tilled, and then covered with either BFs or PE films. After 1 week, soybean (cv. Daechan) seeds were seeded. Germination rate and plant height were measured at weekly intervals after seeding. In addition, pH, EC, and decomposition and light transmittance levels of films were measured during the experimental period. Daily average temperatures and relative humidity in soils was measured during the experimental period. There was no significant difference in germination rates and plant height in both crops grown with BFs and PE films, but crops grown in the control plot had significantly lower germination rates and growth. Soil pH was not significantly different regardless of treatments (BF, PE, and non-mulching) at 14, 28, and 42 days after seeding. In general, the EC contents in the control plots was lower than in crops grown using BFs and PE films. With the exception of some BFs, light transmittance and decomposition levels of films did not, in general, increase up to 70 days after soybean seeding. Since this study is ongoing, we are continually investigating these parameters. The average daily moisture in soil was higher in crops grown with BFs and PE films than in the control plot. However, the daily average soil temperature was not consistent regardless of treatments. Therefore, the BFs used in this study can be used without negative impacts on soybean growth.
Objective: Tension-type headache is caused by hormones, foods, irritants, stress, obesity, fatigue, and neck and head trigger points-prolonged abnormal posture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of relaxation approach on head posture, static postural stability, and headache in persons with tension-type headache. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty-five persons with tension-type headache participated in this study. This study was a pretest-posttest with a control group design for a duration of 4 weeks (60 min/3 times/1 wk). The participants were randomly allocated to the relaxation approach group (n=18) and the control group with conventional rehabilitation including thermotherapy and transcutaneous electrical stimulation for the same period (n=17). Outcome measures involved forward head posture (FHP), foot pressure, neck disability index (NDI), and six-item headache impact test (HIT-6). Results: Relaxation approach and control groups improved significantly in the amount of forward head posture, neck disability index, and six-item headache impact test scores after training (p<0.05). The control group was found to be significantly different in the amount of FHP, backward foot pressure, NDI, and HIT-6 after training compared to before training (p<0.05). The relaxation approach group significantly improved in forward head posture, neck disability index, and six-item headache impact test compared with control group after training (p<0.05). Neck disability index and six-item headache impact test significantly improved after training compared with before training in the control group (p<0.05). However, the foot pressure was not significantly different between relaxation approach and control groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that treatment with relaxation approach combined with self-exercise would be effective in reducing the amount of forward head posture, neck disability and headache impacts.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of modified calcium sulfate paste on periodontal regeneration. l-wall intrabony defect(mesio-distal width: 4mm, depth: 4mm) was surgically created on the distal side of P2 and mesial side of p4 in four dogs. The control group(GFS) was treated with conventional flap operation alone, and the experimental group(CS) was treated with conventional flap operation with modified calcium sulfate paste application. Both control and experimental groups were sacrificed after 8weeks of healing period, The results of histological and histometric observations were as follows. 1. The length of the junctional epithelium was 0.41${\pm}$0.01mm in the control groups, 0.47${\pm}$0.01mm in the experimental group. 2. The connective tissue attachment was 0.28${\pm}$0.02mm(6.15${\pm}$0.28%) in the control group, 0.18${\pm}$0.01mm(3.41${\pm}$0.14%) in the experimental group. The control group showed more connective tissue attachment. 3. The new cementum formation was 3.80${\pm}$0.06mm(84.80${\pm}$0.33%) in the control group, 4.49${\pm}$0.06mm(87.57${\pm}$0.15%) in the experimental group. Both groups showed a lot of new cementum formation. 4. The new bone formation was 1.43${\pm}$0.03mm(32.37%) in the control group, 2.04${\pm}$O.09mm(40.94%) in the experimental group. 5. The inflamatory cells were observed partially around resorbed calcium sulfate in the connective tissue of the experimental group. 6. Partially resorbed calcium sulfate were found within the connective tissue, around alveolar bone, and in the newly formed alveolar bone, On the basis of these results, newly formed calcium sulfate paste enhanced new bone formation and new cementum formation. The resorption rate of calcium sulfate seems to be controlled by the add-in compounds. Thus research about biocompatibility and adequate resorptionrate is required to develop a improved material.
Personality characteristics of orofacial pain patients was analyzed psychologically by means of the SCL-90-R. 36 TMD patients, 20 burning mouth syndrome(BMS) patients, 31 trigeminal neuralgia(TN) patients, 20 control I and 28 control II were subjected at Orofacial pain clinic, Department of Oral Medicine and Health Promotion Center, Pusan National University Hospital during the period from 1998 to 1999. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Mean values of T-scores on 9 basic scales in all the groups were within normal range. 2. The T-scores of SOM, O-C, ANX and HOS in TMD patient group were significantly higher than those in control I group, but there was no significant difference in all scales between TMD patient group and control II group. 3. The T-scores of SOM in BMS patient group was significantly higher than those in control I group, but there was no significant difference in all scales between BMS patient group and control II group. 4. The T-scores of SOM in TN patient group was significantly higher than those in control II group. 5. As compared with present and absent of the history of systemic diseases, there was no significant difference of the scales in TMD, BMS and TN patient groups but the T-scores of the patient groups with the history of systemic diseases tended to higher than those of the patient group without the history of systemic diseases. 6. As compared with acute and chronic groups, the T-scores of O-C, I-S, PAR, PSY in chronic BMS patient group were significantly higher than those in acute BMS patient.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of liquid culture of Agaricus blazei Murill on the weight gains, food efficiency ratios, serum protein and mineral levels, and serum enzyme activities in growing male rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were given four different types of diets for a succeeding period of 6 weeks, respectively: a normal diet group, a control diet group (normal diet + 15% lard + 0.5% cholesterol), a 30% or 40% A. blazei diet groups (control diet + 30% or 40% A. blazei in water) according to the levels of A. blazei supplementation. The body weight gains, food efficiency ratios, and the liver of the rats fed control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were significantly increased compared to rats fed the normal diet, but those of rats fed the 30% and 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the control diet. The concentrations of total protein, albumin, glucose, and hematocrit value in serum of rats fed the control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the normal diet. The concentrations of urea and creatinine in serum of rats fed the 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the control diet. but the urea of rats fed the 30% and 40% A. blazei diets were significantly decreased compared to rats fed the normal diet. The concentrations of Ca, P, Fe and Mg, and $Ca^{++}$, $K^+$, $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ of rats fed the control diet, 30% or 40% A. blazei diets were similar to those of rats fed the normal diet. There were no differences in the activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, $\gamma$-glutamyltranspeptidase and alkaline phosphatase in the serum among the experimental groups. In conclusion, the rats fed the A. blazei maintained normal protein and mineral levels, and enzyme activities of serum. But the A. blazei feeding could not decrease the body and liver weights in the rats fed high cholesterol diets.
Changing patterns of the reemerging Plasmodium vivax malaria in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) during the period 1993 to 2005 are briefly analyzed with emphasis on the control measures used and the effects of meteorological and entomological factors. Data were obtained from the Communicable Diseases Monthly Reports published by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and webpages of World Health Organization and United Nations. Meteorological data of Kangwon-do (Province) were obtained from local weather stations. After its first reemergence in 1993, the prevalence of malaria increased exponentially, peaking in 2000, and then decreased. In total, 21,419 cases were reported between 1993 and 2005 in South Korea. In North Korea, a total of 916,225 cases were reported between 1999 and 2004. The occurrence of malaria in high risk areas of South Korea was significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with the mosquito population but not with temperature and rainfall, Control programs, including early case detection and treatment, mass chemoprophylaxis of soldiers, and international financial aids to North Korea for malaria control have been instituted. The situation of the reemerging vivax malaria in the Republic of Korea is remarkably improving during the recent years, at least in part, due to the control activities undertaken in South and North Korea.
In order to gain a better understanding of how forests participate in the cycling of carbon, effects of nitrogen addition on soil respiration were investigated on the oak forest in Kongju, Korea. Study site was divided into control, treatment f and treatment 2 plots, with 5 replication in each plot. In each replicate of treatment 1 and treatment 2 were fertilized with ammonium nitrate (NH$_4$NO$_3$), 30 g/$m^2$ and 60 g/$m^2$, respectively. Soil respiration, soil temperature, ammonium-N and nitrate-N were measured during the experimental period. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in Ta were higher than those in control and T$_1$. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in top-soil and sub-soil decreased sharply in August after bi9 rainfall in July in T$_1$ and T$_2$, however, those in control plot increased. Soil respiration in T$_2$ Plot showed consistently higher than those in control and T$_1$ until the end of July. However, soil respiration was similar among the control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August and September The amount of Co$_2$ released from soil respiration in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August was 8.0$\pm$0.4, 9.3$\pm$0.6 and 10.2$\pm$0.5 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍs$^{-1}$ , respectively. However, those in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$in mid-August was 13.0$\pm$0.4, 13.5$\pm$0.5, 13.3$\pm$0.6 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍ$^{-1}$ , respectively. The results suggest that nitrogen addition in this oak forest has a positive effect on soil respiration.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of weight control by use of commercial formula diet and nutrition education on 36 obese women over a period of 6 months. During the study it motivated ways for women to control their weight and improve their health, thus analyzing variables that influence weight control. To help weight control, for the first 3 weeks, along with 1 regular mea, 2-3 liquid formula diets of 135㎉ per pack a day were provided within the 1,200-800㎉ range. For 6 months since then, all 3 meals were taken regularly and it was recommended that energy which is 500㎉ less than energy requirement be taken. To evaluate the effect of weight change by the weight control program, anthropometric measurements, biochemicl parameter, and food behavior are measured. The mean body mass index(BMI) was 30.1$\pm$3.8(25.0-43.6) and it was in the upper 5 percentile of the mean BMI of Korean women. The percent of body fat was significantly reduced from 29.1$\pm$2.4 to 26.4$\pm$2.3, showing that the weight control program induced not only a change in weight but also a change in body composition. The body circumference such as waist and hip circumference and skinfold thickness measurements of biceps, triceps, subscapular and surprailiac were reduced significantly, but the mean waist-to-hip ratio didn't change. Singnificantly improved food behavior score measured by the questionnaire indicated that the weight-contorl program induced the change of the food behavior, as well. Weight loss also induced biochemical parameters of the subject, thus total cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, and triglycerol which were in the high range of the normal values were reduced to 20.2%(p<0.01), 22.2%(p<0.01), 25.8%(p<0.01), repectively. HDL-cholesterol didn't change significantly, but the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol increased(p<0.01).
A real-time quality control system for meteorological data (air temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation) measured by an integrated meteorological sensor has been developed based on comparison of quality control procedures for meteorological data that were developed by the World Meteorological Organization and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), using time series and statistical analysis of a 12-year meteorological data set observed from 2000 to 2011 at the Incheon site in Korea. The quality control system includes missing value, physical limit, step, internal consistency, persistence, and climate range tests. Flags indicating good, doubtful, erroneous, not checked, or missing values were added to the raw data after the quality control procedure. The climate range test was applied to the monthly data for air temperature and pressure, and its threshold values were modified from ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ and ${\pm}3{\sigma}$ to ${\pm}3{\sigma}$ and ${\pm}6{\sigma}$, respectively, in order to consider extreme phenomena such as heat waves and typhoons. In addition, the threshold values of the step test for air temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, and wind speed were modified to $0.7^{\circ}C$, 0.4 hPa, 5.9%, and $4.6m\;s^{-1}$, respectively, through standard deviation analysis of step difference according to their averaging period. The modified quality control system was applied to the meteorological data observed by the Weather Information Service Engine in March 2014 and exhibited improved performance compared to the KMA procedures.
