  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of chemical and sensory properties and cholesterol lowering effect of milk treated with $\beta$-cyclodextrin to reduce cholesterol and supplemented with evening primrose oil (EPO). The average cholesterol removal rate was 93.5%. The thiobarbituric acid (TBA) absorbance increased proportionally to storage period and amount of EPO addition. TBA absorbance was significantly different in the EPO-added groups from that in unadded groups in all periods. The production of short-chain free fatty acids (FFA) increased with longer period of storage. From 6 days of storage, the amounts of short-chain FFA in 6 and 10% EPO-added groups were significantly different from other groups. The scores for all sensory characteristics indicated that sensory quality decreased with both storage time and increasing amount of EPO. Oxidative off-flavor and off-taste were more intense with higher amounts of EPO addition and longer storage period. Also, the higher the amount of EPO addition, the lower overall scores throughout the 15 day storage. Feeding 10% EPO-supplemented cholesterol-reduced milk increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) in male Sprague-Dawley rats by 76%, which is significantly different from the control (27%).

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of breathing exercises via joint mobilization on the lung function and spinal alignment of 30 straight-necked women in their 20 s and 30 s. METHODS: The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group who performed breathing exercises via joint mobilization, and a control group who performed general stretching exercises. The differences between the two groups were measured and compared at three points in time: during the pre-examination, after four weeks of intervention, and after a four-week maintenance period. The changes in each group were measured before and after the intervention and after a one-month maintenance period and compared. For data analysis, the SPSS 22 was used to obtain the mean and standard deviation with a significance level of α = .05. RESULTS: Eight weeks of breathing exercises via joint mobilization and general stretching exercises positively impacted the lung function and spinal alignment in straight-necked patients. In particular, the experimental group showed more significant differences in spinal alignment after four weeks period of intervention and four weeks of maintenance. CONCLUSION: Breathing exercises via joint mobilization can be considered an effective intervention that can improve the respiratory volume and spinal alignment for patients with straight necks.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementing earthworm meal (EWM) on the performance of spent laying hens after induced molting, and fatty acid composition in egg yolks. A total of 90 laying hens at 73 weeks of age were fed the experimental diets containing 0.0% (Control) and 0.2% of EWM for 4 weeks. Eggs were collected and weighted every day and Egg production and feed conversion were recorded every week during the experimental period. However fatty acid composition of egg yolk were measured at last week of experimental period. An amount of feed intake increased by supplemental with EMW except for Erst week experimental period (P<0.05). When 76 and 77 week of age, egg production and daily egg mass were improved by the supplemented with EWM (P<0.01), but average egg weight was not different when fed a EWM, therefore feed/egg mass was significantly decreased when fed a EWM. The ratio of egg yolk n-6/n-3 fatty acids contents was significantly improved fed a EMW (P<0.05). It is concluded that supplementing 0.2% of earthworm meal in the spent laying hens after induced molting was fast in recover of physical strength, therefore improves laying performance.

  • To investigate the response of egg production to the artificial light to induce early egg laying. and the changes of egg weight and egg shape during the egg laying cycle, 30 Korean ring-necked pullets and their 1,284 eggs layed under artificial light control were used in this study. The first egg was ohserved at the age of 31 wk, after 4 wk of stimulating light(16 hour light: 8 hour dark). Egg production rate during seven 2-wk periods from the begining of the first egg was 43.7% and a clear peak egg production(61.7%) was shown at the 4th 2-wk period. The effects of egg production period and pullet on the egg weight, egg length, egg width and egg shape index(width/length) were significant(P<0.01). In the egg production cycle. egg weight, egg length and egg width increased steadly with time. but the value of egg shape index increased up to the 3rd 2-wk period and then decreased. Repeatabilities from intraclass correlation for the egg weight, egg length. egg width and egg shape index were 0.61. 0.53, 0.49 and 0.48, respectively.

  • Daily changes in phytoplankton abundance and species composition were monitored from July to September 2003 (n=47) to understand which factors control the abundance at a station in Jangmok Bay. During the study, the phytoplankton community was mainly composed of small cell diatoms and dinoflagellates, and the dominant genera were Chaetoceros, Nitzschia, Skeletonema and Thalassionema. Phytoplankton abundance varied significantly from $6.40{\times}10^4$ to $1.22{\times}10^7$ cells/l. The initially high level of phytoplankton abundance was dominated by diatoms, but replacement by dinoflagellates started when the NIP ratio decreased to <5.0. On the basis of the N/P and Si/N ratios, the sampling periofd could be divided into two: an inorganic silicate limitation period (ISLP, $14^{th}$ $July-12^{th}$ of August) and an inorganic nitrogen limitation period (INLP, $13^{th}$ of August - the end of the study). Phosphate might not limit the growth of phytoplankton assemblages in the bay during the study period. This study suggests that phytoplankton abundance and species composition might be affected by the concentrations of inorganic nutrients (N and Si), and provides baseline information for further studies on plankton dynamics in Jangmok Bay.

  • This study was performed to characterize stormwater runoff of pollution material from nonpoint sources during rainfall in drainage basins of Hongjechun watershed, and to suggest management methods to control the first flush of nonpoint sources. We conducted 4 times of field surveys including 3 times of wet period and 1 times of dry period for 5 stations, which consist of 3 stations in main stream of Hongjechun and 1 station in tributaries of Sinyoungchun and Gukichun, respectively. The variation of pollutant concentrations in terms of BOD, COD, SS and TP was large depending on the flow rate of stormwater, while a little change of TN concentration was investigated. Depending on the rainfall event, the difference of flowrates, and runoff loadings was large, while the difference of those for dry wether period was not noticeable for various sub-basins. In the results of unit load calculation, the range of 153-277 kg/ha/yr for BOD, 222-422 kg/ha/yr for COD, 264-432 kg/ha/yr for SS, 40-70kg/ha/yr for TN, and 13-25 kg/ha/yr for TP was obtained for Hongjechun, Sinyoungchun, and Gukichun sub-basins. Compared with the previous studies, the result of this study was founded to be acceptable.

  • The object of this study was to investigate the effects of blanching and lactic acid bacterial inoculation on the quality of kimchi. The pHs of the group added Leuconostoc mesenteroides were rapidly decreased, and then kept almost steady states. However, the pHs of the groups added Bifidobacterium bifidum were gradually decreased. Blanching treatment reduced the number of viable cells. At the beginning of the fermentation, the total organic acid contents of the blanched groups were lower than those of the non-blanched groups, but later on they were higher. With fermentation, the contents of malic, citric and fumaric acid were decreased in the control group, but increased in the cultured groups and all blanched groups. The cutting forces of the blanched groups were higher than those of the non-blanched groups during the whole fermentation period. The inoculation of Leu. mesenteroides was effective on the preservation of ascorbic acid. Blanching and the inoculation of Leu. mesenteroides gave good effect on the sensory acceptability. The acceptability of the groups added Bifidobacterium bifidum was low in initial fermentation period, but increased during the late fermentation period.

  • To clarify the necessity of surgery for fistula-in-ano (FIA) in infant, a retrospective analysis of 82 cases FIA in infant were performed for 11 years period from 1987 to 1998. Group A included 44 cases in the period of surgery oriented treatment to 1992, and group B contained 38, period of feeding control oriented management (FC) after 1993. FC, that was indicated in case with loose stool and eczematoid perianal skin (LSES), composed of quit breast feeding, change of cow milk or complete weaning. Surgical decision was made after improvement of stool condition. Fistulectomy was performed in 29 cases (65.9 %) of group A. However, in group B, only 15 cases (39.5 %) required surgery (p=0.0036). Thirty-four cases in B had the history of LSES, and Fe was applied in 25, and was effective in 24. Among 24 cases, 21 showed complete healing with FC, 3 had surgery because of the persistent FIA, and 1 got operation due to no improvement of stool condition. In conclusion, Fe has to be applied to FIA in infant before surgery, particularly in cases with history of LSES. As one of the etiologic factors for FIA, LSES could be considered to this particular age group.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of a levan diet on the body fat accumulation and serum lipid composition of 29 Korean women over a period of up to 12 weeks (n=13 for the control group, n=16 for the levan group). The subjects ate an uncooked diet (6 g) with 400$m\ell$ of tap water twice a day. The mean body weight and height measurements of the subjects (levan group) at the outset were 66.0$\pm$8.8kg and 156.7$\pm$5.3cm, respectively. The subjects showed a significant reduction in weight, body fat mass, anthropometric measurements and skinfold thickness during the experimental period. The waist hip ratio (WHR) was 0.88$\pm$0.03 at the outset, and fell to 0.82$\pm$0.05 after 4 weeks. The intake of levan was also influenced on the levels of serum Fe, leptin, lipoprotein lipase, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride. The serum glucose levels were within the normal range during the experimental period. The initial serum triglyceride level was 121mg/dl, but fell to 103mg/dl after 4 weeks of levan supplementation. The current study demonstrates that a levan diet is effective in controlling weight, body fat, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
