  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the nutrition education on preschool children's nutrition knowledge and behaviors. The study subjects were preschool children attending J kindergarten located in Wonju. Each of the control group and the education group consisted of 49 children and the education group was exposed to nutrition education while the control group did not. The nutrition education intervention lasted 9 weeks weekly basis. The t-test for the homogeneity of each group showed no meaningful difference at the beginning point of nutrition education. After nutrition education a test of nutrition knowledge using picture-questionnaire was carried out by the researcher for the subjects of education group and control group and the caretakers of the education group were offered self-administered questionnaire on the changes in children's dietary behaviors. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Nutrition education intervention showed a meaningful difference in children's understanding nutrition; the kinds and function of food, the relationship between food and body, the function of nutrients and enhanced their idea on hygiene compared to the control group (p < p.005). 2. However, nutrition education intervention made no statistically meaningful difference in children's dietary behaviors such as having breakfast, keeping balanced diet, washing hands before meals, saying "thanks" before and after meals, cleaning the table after meals, brushing teeth after meals and so on. Therefore, we found that it is hard to expect children to correct their dietary behaviors in such a short period of 9 weeks and nutrition education for preschool children should be offered to caretakers at the same time.

  • The inverted pendulum is a typical example of unstable systems and has been used for verification of designed control systems. It is also very popular in control education in laboratories, serving as a good example to show the utility of the state space approach to the controller design. This paper shows two kinds of experiment using inverted pendulum: one is the stabilization of a single spherical inverted pendulum by a plane manipulator using visual feedback, and the other is the state transfer control of a double pendulum. In the former experiment, the feedback stabilization using a CCD camera has major importance as an example of controller implementation with non-contact measurement. The latter involves the standard stabilizing regulation method and nonlinear control techniques. The details of the experimental systems, the control algorithms and the experimental results will be given.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the sex education program on the elementary school students' sex-related knowledge and attitude. The research method used in this study is an equivalent control group pre-test and post-test and post-test design in a quasi-experimental research format. The subjects of this study were the 5th-grade elementary school students(63 in the experimental group and 60 in the control group) in O and O elementary school in G city. The data was collected from April 4th to July 3th, 2003. The experimental group received a sex education program while the control group did not receive any treatment. The sex education program was implemented for 40 minutes every 2-3 days which total twelve sessions over 4 weeks. Using the SPSS 10.0 program, the data was analyzed by $X^2$ - test, Fisher exact test, t-test, and a repeated measures ANOVA., Rrsults : The experimental group who received the sex education program showed a significantly higher sex-related knowledge score than the control group (F=140.52, p=.001). The experimental group showed a significantly higher sex relatied attitudes score than the control group (F=40.80, p=.001). This study concluded that the sex education program was effective in both sex-related knowledge and attitudes for elementary school students. Therefore, it appears to be effective for 5th-grade students to receive intensive sex education. It es recommended that the schools and government develop education media and a sex education program for parents, have a sex education teacher and a place where students can be counseled, and a professional consultant who can effectively counsel the students regarding sex-related issues.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the effect of the individual nutrition education for type 2 diabetes who participate the diabetes buffet. The subjects were 66 patients and divided into education (n=34) and control groups (n=32). The mean age of education and control groups were 59.8 and 56.6 years old, respectively. There were no differences in age and body mass index (BMI) between two groups. Initial glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), post prandial plasma glucose (PP2), total plasma cholesterol, and blood pressure were not different between two groups. But fasting blood sugar (FBS) was higher in education group than in control group. On completion of the study, the education group showed significant decreases in body weight, BMI, FBS and PP2, however, the control group showed no changes in body weight, BMI and PP2, and showed a significant increase in FBS. Initial calorie and protein intakes of the education group did not meet the prescribed amount, however, mineral and vitamin intakes were higher than estimated average requirement (EAR). By the end of study, calorie and protein intakes were significantly increased to meet the prescription. In order to evaluate the effect of diet education, awareness of calorie requirement was used as an index of understanding diet prescription. The degree of awareness of calorie requirement was dependent on age: younger patients showed higher awareness than older subjects. The subject who showed better understanding of diet prescription showed lower levels of HbA1c, FBS, and PP2 at the end of the experiment period. The results of this study clearly show that individual diabetes diet education is effective to make the patient understand their diet prescription, and is effective to control body weight and blood sugar level. Awareness of calorie requirement could be used as an index of understanding of prescribed diet. Since age is an important variable to determine the awareness of calorie requirement, different strategies of nutrition education should be developed for different age groups, especially patients over 70 years old.

  • The problem related to sex is closely connected with human life. It is important to acquire accurate sexual knowledge and desirable attitude specially during adolescence, in the physical, psychological and emotional changing period. This study was made to find out the high school girls' knowledge, attitude and experience related to sex, and to support the progress of sex education at school in the future. The design was nonequivalent control pretest-posttest in the quasi-experimental design. In current study, the subjects were 102 girls from the 1 st grade of girls' commercial high school. It was control group 54 and experimental group 48. To teach the experimental group, the sex education program was combined the sex education program made in Korea Education Development Institute, Information of sex education by the Ministry of Education, other concerning articles and previous studies. The research tool was a questionnaire based on the literature review. The pretest-posttest was given to the two groups. The sex education had been taken for the experimental group but not been taken for the control group. The data was collected from May 22, 1993 to July 20, 1993 and was analyzed through spss $^{pc}$. The frequency, $x^2$-test and t-test were calculated. Summarized findings from the study are as follows : groups before sex education. 1. Regarding the first hypothesis was supported as following : "The scores of sexual knowledge in the experimental group who was given sex education will be higher than those of the control group who was not given." (t=-14.11, p=.000) 2. Regarding the second hypothesis was supported as following : "The scores of the attitude toward sex in the experimental group who given sex education will be higher than those of the control group who was not given." (t=-6.15, p=.000) The result of this study suggests that it is so necessary that school nurses should teach about sex regularly at school.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the effect of structured patients education had on prevention of osteoporosis, with fracture and the resulting of life style changes in patients. In this study, a non equivalent control group pre and a post test design was employed. Data were collected through an interview process using questionnaires from April to December of 1999. The subjects, consisting of 59 patients with fractures and over 40 years of age, were diagnosed in K University Hospital. This study tested the patients knowledge at three times. The times were before the program 2 weeks into the program, and 6 months after education program. Life style change related to prevention of osteoporosis was shown twice (before and 6 months after the education program) in the experimental group, and control group went without it. The instruments used for this study were developed by literature review according to a reliability test. Data was analyzed using X2 test and t test to determine similarities between the experimental and control groups. The hypothesis was tested using repeated measures of ANOVA, t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1. The first hypothesis was accepted: a higher level of knowledge about osteoporosis was found in experimental groups who received education than to the control group during the period (F=19.82, p=.0001). 2. The second hypothesis was accepted: a higher level of life style changes about osteoporosis on experimental group were recorded than as compared to control group (t=3.55, p=.001). 3. The third hypothesis was accepted: the higher the knowledge about osteoporosis the higher the level of performance of life style changes about prevention of osteoporosis (r=.600, p=.0001). In conclusion, structured patient education in patient with fractures improved the level of knowledge about osteoporosis and more likely undergo of life style changes 6 months after the education program. Also reeducation would be needed 6 months after program ends. That is structured patient education in pamphlet form would be very effective in nursing intervention that may to result in life style changes. Therefore further research is needed to reinforce the education material and to generalize the education effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of nutrition education on dietaty behavior, nutrition knowledge and weight control of middle school students. The study is based on the assumption that students' dietary behavior, nutrition knowledge and weight-control are considerably influenced by whether they get nutrition education or not. A total of 495 students aged between $14{\sim}16$ (249 boys and 246 girls) were surveyed one middle school located Siheungsi, Gyeonggido. The survey reveals that 55.4% of the boy students and 63.0% of the girl students have been provided nutrition education in curriculum related to nutrition, for instance home economics, technology class, and/or some other classes. The results showed that the students who have been provided nutrition education don't skip breakfast and have three meals regularly(p<0.05). The score of dietary behavior is based on Mini-Dietary Assessment. The average score of the students who have been provided nutrition education is higher than the students who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.01), meaning the nutrition education are affected positively on dietary behavior. The average score of students' knowledge of nutrition is as follows. The average score of the students who have been provided nutrition education is 5.0/10, while the average score of the students who have never been provided nutrition education is 3.9/10. The gap of the average score does come up to an inevitable conclusion that the students who have been provided nutrition education are supposed to get higher score than those who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.0001). And the students who have been provided nutrition education are more satisfied with their body shape than those who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.05).

  • A weight control program has been prescribed to investigate its effects on weight reduction of obese adults. The prescribed weight control program has been followed by 4 overweight adults and fad diets has been followed by 6 ovenveight adults for 3 to 7 months. The prescribed weight control program was basically the low calorie diet (1,500-1,800 kcal per day) and nutrition education was applied to enhance its effects. Fad diets were chosen among the fashionable diets and they were "apple diet" , "yogurt diet" and "Lee Hijae diet" Anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters, and percent of body fat were measured after the respective period of weight control program. Body weight was significantly (p<0.01) reduced and the rate of obesity was also significantly lowered with the prescribed weight control program while the body weight and rate of obesity were not changed with the fad diets. Weight loss from the prescribed weight control program also led to the change of total cholesterol levels while LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride were not significantly changed. Nutrition education and counseling of the weight control subjects induced more weight loss and better food behavior. It is suggested that a weight loss program should be based on the low calorie diet with the well-planned nutrition education The fashionable diets were attractive for a short time period in weight reduction but the rapid weight gain was noticed right after the diets ceased.
