  • This study aimed to identify dose reduction measures by retrospectively analyzing the entrance surface dose at computed tomography and angiography in cardiovascular examination and to contribute the patients with renal impairmend and a high probability of side effects to determine the inspection's direction by measuring the contrast usages actually to active actions for the dose by actually measuring the contrast medium dose. The CTDIvol value and air kerma value, which are the entrance surface doses of the two examinations, and the contrast medium dose depending on the number of slides were compared and analyzed. This study was conducted in 21 subjects (11 males; 10 females) who underwent Cardiac Computed Tomographic Angiography (CCTA) and Coronary Angiography (CAG) in this hospital during the period from May 2014 to May 2016. The subject's age was 48~85 years old (mean $65{\pm}10$ years old), and the weight was 37.6~83.3 kg (mean $63{\pm}6kg$). Dose reduction could be expected in the cardiovascular examination using CCTA rather than in the examination using CAG. In terms of contrast medium dose, CAG used a smaller dose than CCTA. In particular, as the number of slides increases at CAG, the contrast medium dose increases. Therefore, in order to reduce the contrast medium dose, the number of slides suitable for the scan range must be selected.

  • In this paper, a new image segmentation method based on merging of two low contrast neighbor regions iteratively is proposed. It is suitable for very low bit rate coding. The proposed method reduces efficiently contour information and preserves subjective and objective image quality. It consists of image segmentation using 4-level hierarchical structure based on mathematical morphology and 1-level region merging structure using the contrast difference of two adjacent neighbor regions. For each segmented region of the third level, two adjacent neighbor regions having low contrast difference value in fourth level based on contrast difference value is merged iteratively. It preserves image quality and shows the noticeable reduction of the contour information, so that it can improve the bottleneck problem of segmentation-based coding at very low bit rate.

  • Murakami and Cavanagh (1998a,b, 1999) reported a jitter aftereffect in a static random noise after a period of adaptation to a patch of dynamic random noise. To a account for this phenomenon. they proposed the retinal slip caused by a small eye movements in the unadapted area, which is usually compensated by the visual system to stabilize images but is unsuppressed due to the adaptation. We tested this hypothesis with new experimental method and stimuli that were supposed to nullify or reduce the effect. However. the aftereffect was still observed even under these stimuls conditions More importantly, the perceived aftereffect was rather different from Murakami and Cavanagh's. After adaptation to a counterphase flickering cosine grating, the adjacent unadapted region seems to move away from the observer during the test period instead of jittering in the frontoparallel plane. We proposed a possible explanation for this new phenomenon noting the severe contrast reduction of the adapted region during flickering period. The aftereffect might be due to the flicker-inducing contrast reduction during adaptation that produces different depth planes for the adapted and unadapted region and its restoration during the test period.

  • Various methods have been proposed for enhancing the contrast of laser speckle contrast image (LSCI) in subcutaneous blood flow measurements. However, the LSCI still suffers from low image contrast due to tissue turbidity. Herein, a physicochemical tissue optical clearing (PCTOC) method was employed to enhance the contrast of LSCI. Ex vivo and in vivo experiments were performed with porcine skin samples and male ICR mice, respectively. The ex vivo LSCIs were obtained before and 90 min after the application of the PCTOC and in vivo LSCIs were obtained for 60 min after the application of the PCTOC. In order to obtain the skin recovery images, saline was applied for 30 min after the application of the PCTOC was completed. The visible appearance of the tubing under ex vivo samples and the in vivo vasculature gradually enhanced over time. The LSCI increased as a function of time after the application of the PCTOC in both ex vivo and in vivo experiments, and properly recovered to initial conditions after the application of saline in the in vivo experiment. The LSCI combined with the PCTOC was greatly enhanced even in deep vasculature. It is expected that similar results will be obtained in in vivo human studies.

  • This convergence study analyzed the effectiveness of contrast agent reduction by normal saline solution dilution in the computed tomography of arteries of lower limb. 48 patients of 125 cc contrast agent and 30 patients of the same amount divided at a ratio of 7:3 for the contrast agent and normal saline solution were studied. The average attenuation coefficient(HU) and signal to noise ratio(SNR) of abdominal aorta, femoral artery, popliteal artery and posterior tibial artery at each image were evaluated quantitatively and the four criteria in the five point scale was conducted qualitatively by two radiologists and four radiological technologists. In the quantitative evaluation, both HU and SNR had high average score before dilation but there were no statistical significance by independent t-test(p>0.05). In the qualitative evaluation, there were a little differences in the average scores between 4.86~4.77 of original contrast agent and 4.83~4.67 of dilated contrast agent but there were no statistical significance(p>0.05). In the computed tomography of arteries of lower limb, the dilated contrast agent doesn't influence image quality and reduces overall contrast agent and lowers iodine content per unit of molecular therefore will contribute to decrease side effect of contrast agent.

  • The ramp reset driving method proposed in [1] has been widely adopted because of its stability and high contrast ratio. However, when the conventional ramp reset method is used in PDPs of higher resolution, the long required time for reset often becomes a problem. In this paper, a new driving method that requires much less reset time and that significantly improves the contrast ratio is introduced. Using this new driving method, the required time for reset could be reduced to 150us from 350us of the conventional ramp reset method, and the contrast ratio is almost infinite because the luminance of the off-cell is almost zero.

  • In this paper, new contrast enhancement algorithms that use temporal decimation method and approximated CDF(Cumulative Distribution Function) are proposed. They reduce the amount of computation which is required for image contrast enhancement. Simulation results show that the algorithms can achieve significant reduction in the computational cost and the hardware complexity. Visual test and standard deviation of their histogram have been introduced to evaluate the resultant output images of the proposed method and the original ones.

  • This paper presents the image contrast enhancement technique suitable for local dimming backlight of small-sized mobile display while achieving the reduction of the power consumption. In addition to the large-sized TFT-LCD, small-sized one has adopted LED for backlight. Since, conventionally, LED was mounted on the side edge of a display panel, global dimming method has been widely used. However, recently, new advanced method of local dimming by placing the LED to the backside of the display panel and it raised the necessity of sub-blocked processing after partitioning the target image. When the sub-blocked image has low brightness, the supply current of a backlight LED is reduced, which gives both enhancement of contrast ratio and power consumption reduction. In this paper, we propose simple and improved image enhancement algorithm suitable for the small-sized mobile display. After partitioning the input image by equal sized blocks and analyzing the pixel information in each block, we realize the primary contrast enhancement by independently processing the sub-blocks using the information such as histogram, mean, and standard deviation values of luminance(Y) component. And then resulting information is transferred to each backlight control unit for local dimming to realize the secondary contrast enhancement as well as reduction of power consumption.

  • Compositional data consist of compositions that are non-negative vectors of proportions with the unit-sum constraint. In disciplines such as petrology and archaeometry, it is fundamental to statistically analyze this type of data. Aitchison (1983) introduced a log-contrast principal component analysis that involves logratio transformed data, as a dimension-reduction technique to understand and interpret the structure of compositional data. However, the analysis is not usable when zero values are present in the data. In this paper, we introduce 4 possible methods to reduce the dimension of compositional data with zero values. Two real data sets are analyzed using the methods and the obtained results are compared.

  • Reducing compression artifacts such as ringing and blocking is one of important issues to improve a visual quality of a JPEG compressed image. In this paper, we propose a new post processing technique based on bilateral filtering (BF), which is one of the techniques that are used to reduce compression artifacts. An important issue with the application of the BF is the selection of the filter parameters, which affects the result significantly. In this work, we suggest a new method to select the filter parameter automatically. In addition to artifact reduction using the BF, a contrast enhancement is performed to overcome the contrast loss problem due to compression. The experimental result shows that the proposed approach can alleviate the artifacts efficiently.
