  • Out of 412km long Kyung-bu high-speed railway, 302km was designed in tile form of either bridges or tunnels. Most of bridges were designed to be prestressed concrete box girder type. The precast span method was selected because of good quality of bridge section secured by factory manufacturing, fast construction speed, low construction cost with mechanized construction and the safety fur field workers. The precast span method has been mainly utilized in bridges consisted of repeated simple spans. However, we applied the precast span method to continuous bridge for high-speed railway Since it was the first attempt to apply ate precast span method to a continuous bridge for high-speed railway, many design and construction details were studied and implemented in the construction. Design and construction processes of a continuous bridge construction using tile precast span mettled are briefly described in this paper.

  • This paper investigates the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains moving on multi-span continuous bridges. The dynamic impact factor of multi-span continuous bridges under trainloads was first determined in the parametric study, which shows that the dynamic impact factor will be large when the first bridge vertical natural frequency is equal to the trainload dominant frequencies, nV/D, where n is a positive integer, V is the train speed, and D is the train carriage interval. In addition, more continuous spans will produce smaller dynamic impact factors at this resonance condition. Based on the results of three-dimensional finite element analyses using the soil-structure interaction for realistic high-speed railway bridges, we suggest that the bridge span be set at 1.4 to 1.5 times the carriage interval for simply supported bridges. If not, the use of four or more-than-four-span continuous bridges is suggested to reduce the train-induced vibration. This study also indicates that the vibration in the train is major generated from the rail irregularities and that from the bridge deformation is not dominant.

  • The objective of this experimental study is to understand the shear behavior of reinforced concrete continuous deep beams. The main variables considered were concrete strength and shear span-to-depth ratio. Specimens of 4 two-span continuous deep beams were tested and compared with the strength of simple span beams. The results show that the influence of concrete strength on the shear strength of continuous deep beams is comparable to that on simple span deep beams. However, the effect of span-to-depth ratio is significantly greater than simple span deep beams.

  • A existing design method of PSC girder bridges, according to total service loads, stress required tendon force at a time. Because this design method increases beam depth, design of long span is difficult. However, As UC girder stressing at difficult loading stages reduces sectional depth of PSC girder, both design and operation of long span bridges is possible. so, this study analyzes the effect of design parameter (Girder Strength, Girder Spacing, Span Length, Joint Strength) on the beam depth of IPC girder continuous bridges, and shows sectional depth of UC girder for design of long span bridges. According to analysis, when a continuous bridges of same length span is at strength of joint over strength of girder of 600kg/$cm^{2}$, a change of beam depth is observed and when a continuous bridges of different span length is at strength of joint below strength of girder of 600kg/$cm^{2}$, a change of beam depth is observed. In two case, a change of beam depth is mostly observed over strength of girder of 350kg/$cm^{2}$ according to analysis of deflection data, a continuous bridges of IPC girder is nearly satisfied.

  • A construction method for continuous prestressed Composite Bridges(PCB's) is developed and successfully applied to the design of two-span continuous PCB's of five different span lengths. The construction of continuous PCB's goes through 17 different loading conditions. for each loading condition, the allowable stress design method is used to determine section properties. The analytical results of two-span continuous PCB's arc compared with those of simple PCB's. The comparison shows that the use of the proposed method can reduce 10-15 percents of the concrete section area and approximate 28 percents of the steel section area, as well as 5-8 percents of the girder height. The study indicates that the use of the proposed PCB's method can significantly reduce construction and maintenance costs of bridges.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the near-optimal parameters of continuous beam subject to a moving load. The computer-aided optimization technique is used to obtain the near-optimal parameters. The computer program is developed to obtain the natural frequency parameters and the forced vibration responses to a transit point load for the continuous beam with variable support spacing, mass and stiffness. The optimization function to describe the design efficiency is defined as a linear combination of four dimensionless span characteristics: the maximum dynamic stress; the stress difference between span segments; the rms deflection under the transit point load; and the total span mass. Studies of three span beams show that the beam with near-optimal parameters can improve design efficiency by 12 to 24 percent when compared to a reference configuration beams of the same total span length.

  • The vibration characteristics of continuous span periodically supported beams with moving loads are determined theoretically and experimentally. Moving loads are assumed to travel at constant acceleration with constant magnitude. Analyses by using the Fourier Transform technique are developed to determine the dynamic performance of moving load interacting with multiple and continuous beam. Equation of motion for the moving load is non-dimensionalized. Non-dimensional deflection proflies of continuous beam are presented in detail for the single concentrated moving load with constant acceleration. Experimental moving load and continuous beam models are developed. The maximum deflections at each midpoints 5,7 and 9 span beam are measured and their non-dimensional maximum deflections are presented. The non-dimensional maximum deflection of continuous beam is compared with measured maximum deflection of 9 span beam and found to agree reasonably well. The deflection of continuous beam due to moving load with acceleration is strongly influenced in the resonance region.

  • Long continuous bridge deck can become contracted considerably as temperature drops, which can lead to a large expansion of sleeper span at the end of it. Since this huge sleeper span then can cause problems both with safety of train operation and structural stability of tracks, it is necessary to take the issue into consideration systematically in the designing process of the bridge. In this paper, an evaluation process through the analysis of train-track interaction was presented which can basically review the effects of the expansion of sleeper span at the end of long continuous bridge deck on the safety of the train and the structural stability of the track. The analyses of the interaction between the light rail train and tracks were carried out targeting the sleeper span as a main parameter. The safety of train operation and structural stability of tracks in a light rail system due to the expansion of the sleeper span were evaluated by comparing the numerical results with the related criteria.

  • Bridges and tunnels mainly compose the structural system of Kyung-bu high-speed railway in Korea and the prestressed concrete box girder bridges are applied for the most part of bridge structures. Precast full span construction method was practiced in the construction of many prestressed concrete box girder bridges in Kyung-bu high speed railway for the high quality, great construction speed, low construction cost and construction safety. However, there have been no application of this method in continuous bridges until now. Therefore, a new advanced precast full span construction method is developed using pre-tensioning for precast and post-tensioning in alternating the simple span into a continuous bridge system. since the high-speed railway trains can cause dynamic problems in a continuous bridge. This study shows the structural behavior and the construction process of the new advance method.

  • Accurately determining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a structural floor is an essential step to assess the floor's human-induced vibration serviceability. In the theoretical analysis, the prestressed concrete floor can be idealized as a multi-span continuous anisotropic plate. This paper presents a new analytical approach to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a multi-span continuous orthotropic plate. The suggested approach is based on the combined modal and perturbation method, which differs from other approaches as it decomposes the admissible functions defining the mode shapes by considering the intermodal coupling. The implementation of this technique is simple, requiring no tedious mathematical calculations. The perturbation solution is validated with the numerical results.
