Purpose: To evaluate the effects of continuous self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) on glycemic control in diabetic patients. Methods: Among the diabetic patients who visited the department of internal medicine in H hospital from April 1 to October 27 2008, 76 patients were divided into the experimental group (n=39) and control group (n=36). The experimental group was required to measure blood glucose levels at least twice every other day using SMBG; their compliance was aided by weekly telephone reminders for 3 months after discharge. Glycated hemoglobin, fasting blood sugar and postprandial 2 hours glucose level, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein were measured before and after the study. Results: Baseline characteristics were not different between the experimental and control groups. Three months later, there was a significant difference in postprandial glucose between the two groups (t=-2.042, p=.045). Conclusion: There was significant improvement of glycemic control after the use of continuous SMBG, suggesting its value in strict glycemic control and the merit of an aggressive education program.
Commercially available continuous glucose sensors require the operation stability for more than two weeks. Typically, the sensor comprises a sensing layer and an over-coating layer for the stable operation inside the body. In the sensing layer, enzymes and mediators are cross-linked together for the effective sensing of the glucose. The over-coating layer limits the flux of glucose and works as a biocompatible layer to the body fluids. Here, we report the simple preparation of the flux-limiting layer by the condensation of polyethyleneimine (PEI), tri-epoxide linker, and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (PTGE). The sensor is constructed by a layer-by-layer drop-coating of the sensing layer containing glucose dehydrogenase and the PEI-derived blocking layer. It is stable for more than 14 days, which is enough for the sensor in the continuous monitor glucose monitoring (CGM) system.

Objectives: There is considerable evidence that polluted ambient air contributes to the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Heart rate variability (HRV) is defined as the variation in heartbeat intervals and has been reported as a biological marker of cardiovascular disease. This article reviews the existing literature in order to examine the association between air pollution and HRV. Methods: Literature was searched using Web of Science with the key words of "air pollution", "heart rate variability" and other related terms. A total of 156 articles were listed. For review, 21 of those listed publications were chosen after excluding studies regarding chamber studies, occupational environment, secondhand smoke and automobile exhaust. Results: Research methods employed in the publications were classified by type of participants (elderly/adult), air pollution monitoring (ambient/personal) and HRV monitoring (continuous/spot). Among HRV parameters, power in the low frequency range (LF), power in the high frequency range (HF) and standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN) were all associated with air pollutants. The chosen studies were mostly based on elderly populations. In studies based on continuous HRV monitoring, LF and SDNN significantly decreased when $PM_{2.5}$ exposure increased. Conclusion: Continuous HRV monitoring combined with personal exposure monitoring has been one of the most common study methods in recent publications. We expect that this review will be useful for the study of the association between air pollution and cardiovascular effects using HRV.

Water toxicity monitoring based on the continuous cultivation of Photobacterium phorphoreum is presented. Normally, after 10 days of operation, a dark variant, which emits no light, appears and dominates the population, resulting in a rapid decrease in bioluminescence. Therefore, to overcome this problem, a fluidized-bed reactor is used in which alginate-immobilized cells are grown and leaking cells are continuously released into the effluent Experimental results revealed that the dominance of dark variants was suppressed inside the immobilized beads, thereby mitigating the rapid loss of bioluminescence. Plus, a high dilution rate (1.2 h$\^$-1/) prevented the occurrence of other microbial contamination in the reactor The concentration and bioluminescence of the released cells were sufficient to measure the water toxicity for more than 4 weeks.

The real-time traffic data is generated continuous and unbounded stream data type while intelligent transport system (ITS) needs to provide various and high quality services by combining with spatial information. Traditional database techniques in ITS has shortage for processing dynamic real-time stream data and static spatial data simultaneously. In this paper, we design and implement an advanced traffic monitoring system (ATMS) with the integration of existed data stream management system (DSMS) and spatial DBMS using IntraMap. Besides, the developed ATMS can deal with the stream data of DSMS, the trajectory data of relational DBMS, and the spatial data of SDBMS concurrently. The implemented ATMS supports historical and one time query, continuous query and combined query. Application programmer can develop various intelligent services such as moving trajectory tracking, k-nearest neighbor (KNN) query and dynamic intelligent navigation by using components of the ATMS.

This paper presents a novel technology for unattented continuous monitoring of radioactive material in hot cell environments. In this monitoring system, the surveillance camera data and NDA data are time synchronized and integrated into the same dimension through data processing. The integrated information is then fed into a neural network to generate diagnostics through data processing. the integrated information of the concept is tested for a spent nuclear fuel transprotation in an operational hot cell at KAERI. The presented integral part of the multi-sensory system and the analytical paradigm may provide an effective technologyical alternative for safeguarding new conceptual hot cell facilities, namely the Dupic facility.

Most of significant defects in the pressure boundaries of nuclear power plant we re dispositioned to be monitored periodically every inservice inspection. Due to the difficulty of the defect sizing during operation, it is necessary to develope the continuous flaw monitoring techniques. The Tip Diffraction method, specifically speaking, spot seems to be suitable for flaw monitoring. The optimum conditions of selecting the transducer were 3.5 MHz and 45-57 degree according to compatibility with the defect height. The effective calculation of the defect height was to assume the fact that the incident beam is parallel. This method would be supplemented to ASME method about the defect characterization for the surface flaw.
An automatic modal identification program is developed for continuous extraction of modal parameters of three cable-supported bridges in Hong Kong which are instrumented with a long-term monitoring system. The program employs the Complex Modal Indication Function (CMIF) algorithm for identifying modal properties from continuous ambient vibration measurements in an on-line manner. By using the LabVIEW graphical programming language, the software realizes the algorithm in Virtual Instrument (VI) style. The applicability and implementation issues of the developed software are demonstrated by using one-year measurement data acquired from 67 channels of accelerometers permanently installed on the cable-stayed Ting Kau Bridge. With the continuously identified results, variability in modal vectors due to varying environmental conditions and measurement errors is observed. Such an observation is very helpful for selection of appropriate measured modal vectors for structural health monitoring use.
A 33-year-old man presented to the plastic surgery department for foreign body removal 1 month after the insertion of a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor (Dexcom G5) in the left upper arm. The patient had used the CGM system for 5 years, and the insertion was done in the usual manner. The entire sensor wire was visible on simple radiography and ultrasonography. In the operating room, and the sensor wire was identified in the intermuscular septum and removed. No foreign body reaction or inflammatory signs were found around the CGM, and the extracted wire measured 2.5 cm. Thus, it was assumed that the whole sensor wire was detached from the transmitter, not fractured. No remnant foreign body was observed on follow-up simple radiography.
This paper introduces an approach to the realization of an ICT-based bridge remote monitoring system that enables real-time monitoring and controlled adjustments for unexpected heavy loads and also for damaging earthquakes or typhoons. In this paper, an integrated bridge remote monitoring system called the "Intelligent Bridge", which consists of a stand-alone monitoring system (SMS) and a web-based Internet monitoring system(IMS), was developed for not only bridge maintenance but also as an application for a para-stressing bridge system. To verify the possibility of controlling the actual structural performance of an "Intelligent Bridge", a model 2-span continuous cable-stayed bridge with adjustable cables was constructed. The experimental results demonstrate that the implemented monitoring system supplies detailed and accurate information about bridge behaviour for further evaluation and diagnosis, and it also opens up prospects for future application of a web-based remote system to actually adjust in-service bridges under field conditions.
