  • A study is made to put forward the new method of continuous-shear drawing (CSD), and investigate deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of aluminum alloy with a comparison of equal-channel angular (ECA) drawing. In contrast to ECA drawing, the die for CSD deformation can impart an additional strain to the workpiece since the diameter of the exit channel is narrower than that of its entrance channel. Although no significant crack occurs in all conditions during deformation, the sample deformed via CSD method showed better surface quality as compared to ECA drawing. This is mainly ascribed to the fact that the sample is significantly bent rather than sheared when deforming through ECA drawing.

  • In this paper, a new approach for continuous digits recognition using the Spatio-Temporal Neural Network (STNN) is reported. The continuous seven digits are gargeted to recognize, and our initial recognition rate was 28%. In this paper, to increase the recognition rate, two methods are proposed. In the first method, to compensated the STNN's own defect as well as to emphasize the Korean digits' phonic characteristics, the starting point ofeach digit is detected using the energy and zero-crossing rate, but the ending point is detectedonly using the energy value. In this case, the seven digits recognition reate increased to 61%. Furthermore, in the second method, considering the fact that a same digit could be pronounced differently in continuously spoken environment, the number of STNNs used to represent each digit is increased from one to five. Consequently, the same digit but pronounced differently could be handled well in the new system. As a result of that, the continuously spoken seven digits recognition rate increased to 89%.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the modes of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the three span continuous reinforced concrete bridge with elastic intermediate supports is presented. Such bridge represents either concrete or sandwich type three span bridge on polymeric supports for passive control or on actuators for active control The concrete slab is considered as a special orthotropic plate. The influence of the modulus of the foundation and $D_{22}$, $D_{12}$, $D_{66}$ stiffnesses on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • Three dimensional free vibrations analysis of functionally graded fiber reinforced cylindrical shell is presented, using differential quadrature method (DQM). The cylindrical shell is assumed to have continuous grading of fiber volume fraction in the radial direction. Suitable displacement functions are used to reduce the equilibrium equations to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients, which can be solved by differential quadrature method to obtain natural frequencies. The main contribution of this work is presenting useful results for continuous grading of fiber reinforcement in the thickness direction of a cylindrical shell and comparison with similar discrete laminate composite ones. Results indicate that significant improvement is found in natural frequency of a functionally graded fiber reinforced cylinder due to the reduction in spatial mismatch of material properties and natural frequency.

  • In this paper, the polarization of piezoelectric materials is considered to improve actuation since the piezoelectric polarization has influences on the performance of the actuator. The topology design of compliant mechanism can be formulated as an optimization problem of material distribution in a fixed design domain and continuous approximation of material distribution (CAMD) method has demonstrated its effectiveness to prevent the numerical instabilities in topology optimization. The optimization problem is formulated to maximize the mean transduction ratio subject to the total volume constraints and solved using a sequential linear programming algorithm. The effect of CAMD and the performance improvement of actuator are confirmed through Moonie actuator and PZT suspension design.

  • Due to the asymptotic property, deadbeat control can hardly applied to the continuous time system control. But some delay element method can deal such a problem. Except delay element method, well-known digital deadbeat control can br used with the aid of som smoothing elements. In this paper, and order smoothing element is used for the smoothing of the digital deadbeat controller. And this element is argumented to the plant, and so control problem is to control digitally the argumented system. We simulated this control system using Matlab language and finally apply this algorithm to the rotary inverted pendulum system.

  • This paper proposes a design method of a CDBC(Continuous-time Deadbeat Controller)system that takes into account the response between the sampling instant and using second-order smoothing elements. The continuous deadbeat controller is composed of a serial integral compensator and a local feedback compensator introduced into the state feedback loop. A DC servo motor is chosen for implementing CDBC algorithm. Especially according to the variable input and disturbance, corresponding CDBC design method is suggested. A Matlab Simulink is used for simulation with the Motor parameter. By computer simulations, control inputs and system outputs are shown to have desirable property such as smoothness.

  • Apparent mechanical properties in structural components can be different from the initially designed values due to the formation of the residual stress in metal forming and welding. Therefore, the evaluation of residual stress has great importance in the reliability diagnosis of structural components. A nondestructive continuous indentation technique has been proposed to evaluate various strength concerning mechanical properties from the analysis of load-depth curve. In this study, quantitative residual stress estimation on API X65 welded joints for natural gas pipeline was performed by analyzing the variation of indentation loading curve by residual stress through a new proposed theoretical model. The residual stress from the indentation method was compared with that from the saw-cutting method.

  • Under strong shock loads including earthquake or blast, structures may start to crack in stress concentrated members. The continuous behavior of the structure changes to the discontinuous. In this study, numerical method analyzing continuous and discontinuous behavior of a structure is developed using a modified distinct element method. Equations of motion of each distinct element are integrated using the central difference method, one of the finite difference methods. Interactions between he elements are considered by an element and pore spring. The forces acting in the center of an element include contact stress transferred by element spring; tensile stress by pore spring; and external traction such as earthquake or blast load. To verify the proposed method, the behavior of the cantilever beam subject to the quasi-static concentrated force at the end is investigated. The failure behavior of the simply supported beam subject to the strong shock at the center is studied. The proposed method can predict the failure behavior of the structure due to the shock loading and the post-failure discontinuous behavior of the structure.
