  • This paper summarizes the processing inorganic continuous fibers from Korean minerals. Continuous filament fibers have been produced from two rocks, basalt and quartz diorite porphyry(QDP), by melting method. The essence of the method is that the vitrified materials was placed into the bushing, platinum/rhodium alloy crucible with a nozzle, and heated electrically to a temperature which allowed fiber spinning. Vitrified basalt without additive was suitable for producing continuous filament fiber. However doping quartz diorite porphyry with boric oxide yielded a material which could be pulled continuously.

  • The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has a frequency-adaptive time-frequency tiling property, which makes it popular for the analysis of dispersive elastic wave signals. However, because the time-frequency tiling of CWT is not signal-dependent, it still has some limitations in the analysis of elastic waves with spectral components that are dispersed rapidly in time. The objective of this paper is to introduce an advanced time-frequency analysis method, called the dispersion-based continuous wavelet transform (D-CWT) whose time-frequency tiling is adaptively varied according to the dispersion relation of the waves to be analyzed. In the D-CWT method, time-frequency tiling can have frequency-adaptive characteristics like CWT and adaptively rotate in the time-frequency plane depending on the local wave dispersion. Therefore, D-CWT provides higher time-frequency localization than the conventional CWT. In this work, D-CWT method is applied to the analysis of dispersive elastic waves measured in waveguide experiments and an efficient procedure to extract information on the dispersion relation hidden in a wave signal is presented. In addition, the ridge property of the present transform is investigated theoretically to show its effectiveness in analyzing highly time-varying signals. Numerical simulations and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the present method.

  • The Continuous Risk Profile (CRP) has been well known to be the most accurate and efficient among existing network screening methods. However, the classical CRP uses safety performance functions (SPFs) which require a huge investment to construct a database system. This study aims to suggest a new CRP method using average crash frequencies of homogeneous groups, instead of SPFs, as rescaling factors. Hierarchical clustering analysis is performed to classify freeway segments into homogeneous groups based on the data of AADT and number of lanes. Using the data from I-880 in California, the proposed method is compared to other several network screening methods. The results show that the proposed method decrease false positive rates while it does not produce any false negatives. The method developed in this study can be easily applied to screen freeway networks without any additional complex database systems, and contribute to the improvement of freeway safety management systems.

  • In this study, it induced to a conclusion below by experiment consideration to regarding an effective supercooling ends method of the flow cooling water in a tube of continuous ice making method and the static cooling water in a tube of continuous ice making method which used magneticfluid in a dynamic type ice storage system. Continuous ice making in a tube of the flow cooling water was shortened about 12 minutes until supercooling ends that case which gave vertical eccentricity rotation magnetic field 120rpm than did not provide magnetic field by experimental result that was tested to supercooling ends effect from shape control of magneticfluid. Continuous ice making method in a tube of the static cooling water compared with and reviewed the case that was not provided with the magnetic field and exposed cooling surface instantaneously by magnetic field. It confirmed that supercooling degree $\Delta$ $T_{c}$, $\Delta$ $T_{s}$, and $\Delta$ $T_{w}$ became lower because of heat transfering increasing by the occurrence of natural convection between after cooling starting progress time 1∼3 minutes if it did not give a magnetic field, and peformed the supercooling ends when natural convection occurred confirmed that refrigerating capacity was better. That relation $\Delta$ $T_{c}$, and $t_{e}$/($\Delta$ $T_{c}$-$\Delta$ $T_{s}$) after convection occurred, was not depended on $T_{b}$ and initial temperature if the depth of water and thickness of magneticfluid were regular and it was possible to verify conjecture of tp from $\Delta$ $T_{s}$ and $\Delta$ $T_{c}$.lar and it was possible to verify conjecture of tp from $\Delta$ $T_{s}$ and $\Delta$ $T_{c}$.c}$.>.

  • An aerodynamic shape optimization technique has been developed for helicopter rotor blades in hover based on a continuous adjoint method on unstructured meshes. The Euler flow solver and the continuous adjoint sensitivity analysis were formulated on the rotating frame of reference for hovering rotor blades. In order to handle the repeated evaluation of the design cycle efficiently, the flow and adjoint solvers were parallelized using a domain decomposition strategy. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was adopted for the accurate capturing of the tip vortex. Applications were made for the aerodynamic shape optimization of Caradonna-Tung rotor blades and UH60 rotor blades in hover. The results showed that the present method is an effective tool to determine optimum aerodynamic shapes of rotor blades requiring less torque while maintaining the desired thrust level.

  • The continuous active sonar technology is effective for detecting and tracking targets because of short target revisiting rate. Generalized Sinusoidal Frequency Modulation (GSFM) pulses suitable for continuous active sonar systems are known to be capable of obtaining high time-bandwidth product while maintaining the orthogonality between pulses. However, it is unknown how to calculate an appropriate length of time to correlate received GSFM pulses in the presence of a target with acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the appropriate time length based on the correlation when matching the received signal in the continuous active sonar system using GSFM pulse. The proposed method calculates the correlation according to the acceleration of the target and calculates the signal processing length according to the correlation. It is shown that stable detection performance can be obtained when the signal processing length calculated by the proposed method through the level of the sidelobe is applied.

  • In recent years, utilization of underground space has been increasing in various parts of the world. In particular, open-cut method is usually applied to the shallow depth excavation. However some problems such as extreme traffic congestion and unstability of adjacent structures etc. might occur. In order to cope with these problems, the M-CAM (Modified Cellular Arch Method) method was proposed to excavate soil tunnels at shallow depth with secured enough stability and minimized construction period. In this study, sensitivity analysis was performed to predict the influence of the size of CPW(Continuous Pile Wall) and ground conditions on the behavior of the tunnel. First of all, embedded depth and diameter (or thickness) of CPW, coefficient of lateral earth pressure, and ground conditions were selected as parameters that could affect tunnel stability. Meanwhile, FLAC 2D based on finite difference method was used for numerical analysis. As a result of this study, it was checked out that embedded depth among sizes of CPW had a greatest influence on the stability of a tunnel.

  • In this paper, an analytical approach is proposed for determining vibration characteristics of cracked non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam carrying an arbitrary number of spring-mass systems. This method is based on the Timoshenko beam theory, transfer matrix method and numerical assembly method to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes. Firstly, the beam is considered to be divided into several segments by spring-mass systems and support points, and four undetermined coefficients of vibration modal function are contained in each sub-segment. The undetermined coefficient matrices at spring-mass systems and pinned supports are obtained by using equilibrium and continuity conditions. Then, the overall matrix of undetermined coefficients for the whole vibration system is obtained by the numerical assembly technique. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of a cracked non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam carrying an arbitrary number of spring-mass systems are obtained from the overall matrix combined with half-interval method and Runge-Kutta method. Finally, two numerical examples are used to verify the validity and reliability of this method, and the effects of cracks on the transverse vibration mode shapes and the rotational mode shapes are compared. The influences of the crack location, depth, position of spring-mass system and other parameters on natural frequencies of non-uniform continuous Timoshenko beam are discussed.

  • Minimization of processing time in two-photon stereolithography (TPS) has been one of important issues. Generally, a voxel scanning method (VSM) has been used in TPS because the method is very profitable for the stable fabrication irrespective of jittering and response time of scanning equipments such as a stage and a galvano-scanner. However, supplementary processing time due to the on/off control of a shutter for the generation of each voxel is required inevitably in VSM; by this reason, much processing time takes to fabricate largescale micropatterns and three-dimensional patterns. In this work, a continuous scanning method (CSM), generating patterns by movement of beam focus with a constant speed, is proposed for the improvements of scanning speed and precision in TPS. Some line patterns are fabricated by each scanning method to demonstrate the usefulness of CSM with viewpoints of scanning speed and precision.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the three span continuous reinforced concrete bridge with elastic intermediate supports is presented. Such bridge represents either concrete or sandwich type three span bridge on polymeric supports for passive control or on actuators for active control. The concrete slab is considered as a special orthotropic plate. Any method may be used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper, The influence of the modulus of the foundation and $D_{22}$, $D_{12}$, $D_{66}$ stiffnesses on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.
