A fretting wear test rig for cross contacting tube specimens, which employs a piezoelectric actuator, has been developed. Along with the simple loading scheme using dead weights, the rig is very simple to be used also. The accuracy was found acceptable. Inconel 690 tubes were tested in room temperature and ambient condition. Normal load and sliding amplitude range up to 35N and $100{\mu}m$, respectively. The sizes of wear scar and the wear volumes were measured, and wear coefficients have been calculated based on those. A study on the fretting wear mechanism of the tubes has been attempted via microscopic observation. Rugged wear surfaces are induced by the separation and adhesion of particles and formation and subsequent fracture of surface layers. Lapped specimens were also tested and abrasive wear seems to be playing a dominant role.

Flow induced vibration in steam generators has caused dynamic interactions between tubes and contacting materials resulting in fretting wear . Series of experiments have been performed to examine the wear properties of Inconel 690 steam generator tubes in various environmental conditions. For the present study, the test rig was designed to examine the fretting wear and rolling wear properties in high temperature(room temperature - 290。C) water. The test was performed at constant applied load and sliding distance to investigate the effect of test temperature on wear properties of the steam generator tube materials. To investigate the wear mechanism of material, the worn was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The weight loss increase at higher test temperature was caused by the decrease of water viscosity and the mechanical property change of tube material. The mechanical property changes of steam generator tube material, such as decrease of hardness or yield stress in the high temperature tests. From the SEM observation of worn surfaces, the severe wear scars were observed in specimens tested at the higher temperature.
Surface damage accumulation of alumina ceramics under the cyclic stress state was analyzed. The alternating stress state in repeat pass sliding contact was simulated by a synchronized biaxial (normal and tangential) repeated indentation technique. Wear debris formation mechanism through damage accumulation and fatigue grain failure in both alumina ceramic balls and flat disks was confirmed, and the contact induced surface degradation due to fatigue cracking accumulation was quantified by measuring vertical contact displacement. Variation of structural compliance (slope of load-displacement curve) of two contacting bodies was expressed as a variation of the apparent elastic property, called pseudo-elastic constant, of the contact system.

In order to understand the biomaterial like the blood vessel of artery, there is a need to quantify the biomechanical behavior of the vessel. Using computer-controlled experimental system, the experiment can acquire data such as inner pressure, axial load, diameter and axial gauge length without contacting the specimen. Rubber-liked material which is similar to passive artery was selected as pseudo-biomaterial. Deformations are measured for pressure-diameter curves. The data were collected and stored online to be used in the feedback control of experimental protocols. Finally, the illustrative data obtained from the experimental system were presented and the system shows that strain invariants are controlled to understand the nonlinear elastic behavior of biomaterial which is involved with strain energy function.

This paper shows the failure(wear) phenomena of automotive transmission bearings and investigate their characteristics. It was found that the wear mechanism was mainly abrasive wear by the presence of particles in the gear box and the balls was weared more severely than the other tribological contacting parts. The wear of balls alter the bearing contact angle and load ratings, and finally it cause the bearing failure. With close examination of the failed bearing, various countermeasures could be suggested.
Hockey games attracts many fans around the world. This game requires a specific type of ball and a stick for controlling the motion and trace of the ball. This control of motion involves hitting the ball which is a direct intensive dynamic loading. The impact load transferred directly to the hand of the player and in the professional player may cause long term medical problems. Therefore, dynamic motion of the stick should be understood. In the current study, we analyze the dynamic motion of a hockey stick under impact loading from a hockey ball. In doing so, the stick geometry is simplified as a beam structure and quasi-2D relations of displacement is applied along with classical linear elasticity theory for isotropic materials. The governing equations and natural boundary condition are extracted using Hamilton's principle. The final equations in terms of displacement components are solved using Galerkin's numerical method. The results are presented using indentation and contact force values for variations of different parameters.

The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers eon the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analyses of the AE signal are used to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented

Fretting wear test in room temperature water was performed to evaluate the wear coefficient of Inconel 600,690 (Pressurized Water Reactor, PWR) and Alloy 800 (CANadian DeuteriumUranium, CANDU) steam generator (SG) tubes against ferritic and martensitic stainless steels. The main focus is to compare the wear behaviors between Alloy 800 and Inconel alloys. Test conditions are $10{\sim}30N$ of normal load, $200{\sim}450{\mu}m$ of sliding amplitude and 30Hz of frequency. The result indicated that the wear rate of Alloy 800 was higher than those of Inconel 690 at various test condition such as normal loads, sliding amplitudes etc. From the results of SEM observation, there was little evidence of plastic deformation layer that were dominantly formed on the worn surfaces of Inconel 690. Also, wear particles in Alloy 800 were released from contacting asperities deformed by severe plastic flow during fretting wear. Main cause of wear rate between Alloy 800 and Inconel 690 may be due to the difference of hardness between martensitic and ferritic stainless steel. The wear rate and wear mechanism of two tubes in room temperature water are discussed.

When therapeutic irradiation is indicated for the orbital tumors, the greatest concern is the risk of radiation-induced cataract. Conjunctival lymphoma is one of the good examples. We would like to report the procedure of the lens shielding device(L.S.D) and the result of irradiated dose to the lens. L.S.D. consistes of two parts : load alloy to attenuate electron beam, and dental acryl which completely covers the lead alloy to avoid discomfort of cornea from contacting directly with cerrobend and side scattering by cerrobend. And for easy location and removal, side bars were made on each side. Radiation doses were meaured with TLD(TLD 3500 Hawshaw). Markus chamber in a polystyrene phantom. The phantom was irradiated with 9MeV electron beams from Clinac 2100C with $6{\times}6cm$ electron cone. The relative dose at 6mm depth where the lens is located was $4.2\%$ with TLD and $5.1\%$ with Markus chamber clinically when 2600 cGy are irradiated to the eyeball, the mapinary dose to the lens will be 109 cGy or 132 cGy, which will significently reduce the cataract.
Interests in micro/nano-particles have been greatly increasing due to their wide applications in various fields such as environmental and medical sciences as well as engineering. In order to obtain a fundamental understanding of the tribological characteristics at particle-surface contact interface, frictional behaviors according to load/pressure and materials were obtained by using atomic force microscope(AFM) cantilevers with different stiffnesses and tips. Lateral contact stiffnesses were observed in various tip-surface contact situations. Experimental results show that stick-slip friction behavior occurs even when the colloidal probes with a particle of a few micrometers in diameter, which have a relatively large contact area and lack a well-shaped apex, were used. This indicates that atomic stick-slip friction may be a more common phenomenon than it is currently thought to be. Also, experimental results were investigated by considering the competition between the stiffness of the interatomic potential across the interface and the elastic stiffnesses of the contacting materials and the force sensor itself.
