In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk on friction characteristics in various sliding conditions were investigated. AISI52100 steel ball was used for the substrate of coated ball specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1(m in coating thickness. AISI1045 steel was used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of two materials, the tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitrogen environment to avoid oxidation. From the test results, the frictional characteristic between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear tract of counter-body and this layer caused friction transition and high friction. And the adhesive wear occurred from steel disk to TiN coated ball caused the formation of oxide layer on counter parts between the two materials.
The transition between bridge and earthwork often causes the problems of maintenance. The damages of the track on the transition area influence running safety of train and serviceability, increase the maintenance cost. Therefore it is very important to evaluate the dynamic responses of transition and take a efficient measure. In order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of track, the field estimations are performed at the transition area of a conventional line between bridge and earthwork. And the track system on the transition area numerically analyzed to evaluate the dynamic behavior of damaged track with void sleeper. The measured values and Analysis results such as wheel contact force, rail stress, displacement acceleration and track irregularity in the transition area show the dynamic forces are severe. So it is recommended that the transition area should be improved the rigidity by reinforcing the rail.
Wear is affected by numerous factors-contact load, sliding velocity and distance, friction coefficient, material properties and environmental conditions. Among these wear factors, surface hardness is one of very important factors to determine wear. But surface hardness is varied by work hardening during repeated sliding contact. In this reason wear rate is increased or decreased with varying surface hardness, and transition of wear mechanism is happened. In this study, the surface hardening by accumulating residual stress was analyzed by considering the repeated sliding Hertzian contact model. The results showed that surface hardness was increased with increasing contact load, friction coefficient and contact number. And the depth of hardening layer, plastic layer and elastic layer depended upon contact load and number, but they didn't depend upon friction coefficient. The predicted surface hardness was about 1.5-1.8 times as hard as the material.

Skarn at the Dielette formed largely in calc-silicate hornfels at the contact with the Flamanville granite. The skarn consists mainly of garnet and pyroxene, and less frequently vesuvianite. Traversing toward calc-silicate hornfels wall rock from a central zone of the skarn, the general sequence of formation of mineral assemblages is: (1) dark brown garnet (2) pale brown garnet-vesuvianite-pyroxene, and (3) pyroxene-prehnite-scapolite-wollastonite envelopes (designated as transition zone) developed between skarn and calc-silicate hornfels. The central zone of the skarn consists mainly of dark brown garnets (garnet I) that contain little or no pyroxene. The pale brown garnet (garnet II) is associated with pyroxene and vesuvianite. The sequence of these garnets results from the zonal growth outward. There is an abrupt discontinuity in composition between garnet I formed in early stage and garnet II in late stage, while each garnet shows relatively uniform composition. At the zone in contact with the granite, the iron contents of garnets decrease toward the marginal zone of the skarn, from an average value of 36 mole % andradite in garnet I to 18 mole % andradite in garnet II. At the zone distant from the granite, the andradite component decreases from 28 mole % in garnet 1 to 19 mole % in garnet II. The variation of the iron contents of pyroxenes is also similar to that of garnets. The sharp discontinuity in composition of garnets and pyroxenes suggests that the skarn of study area was formed by infiltration metasomatic process. The results of the analyses of mineral assemblages of the transition zone by chemical potential diagrams suggest that the transition zone was made by the diffusion of the elements Ca, K and Fe from the skarn to the calc-silicate hornfels contact zone. The estimated temperatures and $Xco_2$ for the formation of the transition zone show $300^{\circ}C$$440^{\circ}C$ and $0.07{\pm}0.05<Xco_2<0.02{\pm}0.01$ at 1 Kb respectively.
Since impact phenomenon is highly nonlinear, the analysis and control of the contact motion has been a challenging subject. Various researches have been carried out mostly for the contact of a rigid robotic manipulator with a stiff and elastic environment. This paper is motivated by a new contact task: the in-circuit test of a printed circuit board. In this process, high speed contact occurs between a rigid probing manipulator and a plastically deformable work environment. A new dynamic model of the impact controlled probing task has been proposed, considering contact with the plastically deformable object. Approaching velocity conditions to avoid an excess of the allowable penetration depth and control the generated impact force properly are derived from the proposed model. The results of the simulation studies are made for various probing conditions and show the validity of the proposed model.

The ohmic characterization of Au/Te/Au/n-GaAs structure is investigated by the application of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, the specific contact resistance and I-V measurement. Increasing the annealing temperature, the results of XRD measurement show the sharpening of the Au-Ga peak and the increasing of the intensity of Au peak due to the crystallization. At 400$^{\circ}C$, which is the ohmic onset point, Ga$_2$Te$_3$peak gets evident and GaAs regrowth peak appears for the samples annealed at 500$^{\circ}C$. The variation of shottky contact to ohmic contact is confirmed by the I-V curve transition. The specific contact resistance of 3.8x10$\^$-5/$\Omega$-$\textrm{cm}^2$ is obtained for the sample annealed at 500$^{\circ}C$ and above 600$^{\circ}C$ the specific contact resistance increased due to the decomposition of GaAs substrate.

With the increasing running speed of trains, new railway lines in metropolitan areas, and the rising demand for green transportations, the number of underground and tunnel sections are constantly becoming larger, and installations of overhead rigid conductor systems are becoming wider. However, domestic commercial products for overhead rigid conductors are limited to 120 km/h train speeds. In this study, to develop a high-speed (250 km/h) overhead rigid conductor, R-Bar (Rigid Bar), the electrical and mechanical stability was enhanced through the improvement of the cross sectional shape of the R-Bar; the transition structure was also designed for flexibility and natural frequency isolation. In addition, the evaluation of contact forces between a pantograph and the overhead rigid conductor system for 250 km/h train speeds was performed using dynamic analysis.
We investigated the surface structure and wetting behavior of octaneselenolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) formed in a 50 ${\mu}M$ ethanol solution according to immersion time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and an automatic contact angle (CA) goniometer. Closely-packed, well-ordered alkanethiol SAMs would form as the immersion time increased; unexpectedly, however, we observed the structural transition of octaneselenolate SAMs from a molecular row phase with a long-range order to a disordered phase with a high density of vacancy islands (VIs). Molecularly resolved STM imaging revealed that the missing-row ordered phase of the SAMs could be assigned as a $(6{\times}{\surd}3)R30^{\circ}$ superlattice containing three molecules in the rectangular unit cell. In addition, CA measurements showed that the structural order and defect density of VIs are closely related to the wetting behaviors of octaneselenolate SAMs on gold. In this study, we clearly demonstrate that interactions between the headgroups and gold surfaces play an important role in determining the physical properties and surface structure of SAMs.
