The determinansts of expenditure spent on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure were investigated using the 2002 House Income and Expenditure Survey by the Korea National Statistical Office, which consisted of a sample of 918 elderly households. There were significant differences in expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure between elderly and nonelderly households. Age, education, overspending were significant factors that determine the expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure. Overspending is the most important factor related to expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure.
In this paper, the explicit equations on the power consumption and sensitivity ratio of VCM-type actuator for disk drive are proposed. The power consumption and sensitivity ratio is derived in frequency domain. The power consumption during the track following of the actuator can be described well in frequency domain and it can be used to calculate the total power dissipation of the actuator which is needed to compensate the tracking and focusing errors. Also, the sensitivity ratio of an actuator is derived by using the reference servo of a disk drive and will be used to optimally obtain the performances of the actuator. This sensitivity ratio can persuasively explain the basis of the target performances of the actuator in the considerations of the reference servo. The usefulness of the proposed equations for the sensitivity ratio and power consumption of an actuator is shown by a lot of simulations. In the near future, we will verify the simulation results by experiments.
This study developed a KRESS program designed to find the optimization ratio for new and renewable energy systems and analyze the effects of building energy consumption characteristics on the ratio. In spite of clear differences in predicted energy consumption and energy consumption by the loads among 18 facilities, the current formula for obligatory supply ratios applies a correction coefficient according to the building purposes based on energy consumption per each unit area in medical facilities and thus reflects no energy consumption characteristics according to the building purposes. The optimization ratio for new and renewable energy systems was the same for all facilities when the correction coefficients by the building purposes and new and renewable energy sources were all applied. When the correction coefficients were not applied, however, the optimization ratio varied according to building energy consumption characteristics. The findings raise a need to test the correction coefficients in order to select new and renewable energy systems that take into account energy consumption characteristics by the building purposes and loads and reflect economy, environmental performance, and technology.
The objective of this study is to perform an analysis of the heat(heating and cooling) and lighting energy consumption according to the window area ratio and the application of horizontal louver, which is external shading device installed for the purpose of energy savings in office buildings. For this, a building was chosen as a typical example, and the heat and lighting energy consumption was calculated by using the daylight and building energy analysis simulation. The results showed that the total energy consumption, when the lighting control was applied, was reduced by an average of 11.49[%] compared to when there was no lighting control. The smaller the glazing ratio is, the less the total energy consumption is. Also, the application of the horizontal louver increases the total energy consumption under the same condition of glazing ratio.
While most of researches on the performance of high temperature grain dryer have dealt mainly with improving dryer capacity and drying speed during the last twenty years, energy efficiency, in fact, has not been emphasized. Current fuel supplies and energy cost have shifted the emphasis to reducing the energy consumption for grain drying while maintaining dryer capacity and grain quality. Since the energy input for drying is relatively large, the recovery and reuse of at least part of the exhaust energy can significantly reduce the total energy consumption in existing drying systems. Unilization of exhaust heat in grain dryer either through direct recycling or by a thermal coupling in heat exchanger have been subject of a number of investigators. However, very seldom research in Korea has been done in this area. Three drying tests(non-recycling, 0.22 recycle ratio, and 0.76 recycle ratio)were performed to investigate the thermal efficiency and heat loss factors of continuous flow type dryer, and to analyze the effect of recycle ratio (weight of exhaust air recycled/total weight of input air) on the energy requriements for rough rice drying. The test results showed that when the exhaust air was not recycled, the energy lost from furnace was 15.3 percent of input fuel energy, and latent and sensible heat of exhaust air were 61.4 percent and 11.2 percent respectively. The heat which was required in raising grain temperature and stored in dryer was relatively small. As the recycle ratio of exhaust air was increased, the drying rate was suddenly decreased, and thermal efficiency of the kerosene burner was also decreased. Drying test with 0.76 recycle ratio resulted in 12.4% increase in fuel consumption, and 38.4% increase in electric power consumption as compared to the non-recycled drying test. Drying test of 0.22 recycle ratio resulted in 6.8% saving in total energy consumption, 8.0% reduction in fuel consumption, and 2.5% increase in electric power consumption as compared to the non-recycled drying test.
Window is the most demanding design component in the building design. Recently, window area in the building surface has been increased significantly in the office building. As window area increased significantly, however, the thermal load has been increased significantly due to lack of thermal performance of the outside wall. In this paper, we discussed the energy consumption of the buildings according to window area ratio. Two types of building for energy consumption analysis were made by Designbuilder v.1.4 and Energyplus v.2.0. Window area ratio was five different types ($30%{\sim}70%$) in each building. As a result, the cooling energy consumption has been decreased as window area decreased in each building. Whereas the heating energy consumption has been increased window area decreased.
In order to investigate the relationship between the ring gap ratio and oil consumption, the axial motion of piston ring was measured by capacitance technique. The pressures of each land and the motions of each ring were calculated by orifice-volume method in which it is assumed that the ring gaps are the only gas leakage paths. The calculated results were compared with the measured ones. Consequently, it is known that the increase of ring gap ratio has the effect of lifting the first ring. The calculated results were roughly in accordance with those measured. Therefore, it is possible to predict the effect of design variables on the pattern of ring motion. It is known that the lift off of first ring accompanied by the increase of ring gap ratio make rise of oil consumption.
Recently, the aviation industry has sought to reduce its carbon usage in aircraft operations. Specifically, the industry is proceeding with the development of ultra-large turbofan engines and the development of hybrid electric engines to reduce the fuel consumption of aircraft. In one case, Airbus is developing as its future goal an aircraft with a short take-off distance that uses a catapult. In this study, when a b747-400 aircraft with two of the four engines removed was tested using a catapult, its fuel consumption was compared with that of the original aircraft. Fuel consumption was calculated using the mass flow consumption formula. Further, the aircraft L/D ratio caused by engine removal was interpreted using the CFD Tool, Ansys Fluent. The results showed that the lift ratio was improved by about 7% and that the fuel efficiency was improved by about 14%.
Stroke is a serious disease despite recent improvement in medical and surgical treatment. Hence, identification of modifiable risk factors for stroke is important. This case-control study was done to demonstrate that relationship between smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, perception of saltness and the incidence of stroke and to identify that smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and perception of saltness, after adjusting for age, hypertension. A structured interview was carried out from April 15, 1996 to May 3, 1996 in Yonsei Medical Center. The study group consisted of 59 neurologically confirmed stroke patients as the study group and 59 non-stroke patients as controls. Analysis of the data was done by means of ${\chi}^2$-test and logistic regression analysis. The results were as follows. In the study group: 1) Hypertension in males had a 10.2 odds ratio (p<0.05), cardiovascular disease in females had a 11.3 odds ratio (p<0.05) and a farnily history of stroke in males had a 3.1 odds ratio (p<0.05). 2) Females smoking one or more cigarettes had a 8.3 odds ratio (p<0.1), but males had no direct relationship with odds ratio of 1.5 (non-significant). 3) Alcohol consumption in males had a 0.4 odds ratio, and in females had a 0.8 odds ratio. The odds ratio was decreased in alcohol consumption group (non-significant). 4) Males with more than 20 cigarettes pack-years history had a 2.5 odds ratio (p<0.05), more than 25 Body Mass Index had a 3.1 odds ratio (p<0.05) and more than 220 ml ethanol weekly consumption had a 1.5 odds ratio (non-significant). 5) Female smokers had a 8.3 odds ratio (p<0.1), drinkers a 0.8 odds ratio and more than 25 Body Mass Iidex, a 43.1 odds ratio (p<0.05). 6) Females without saltness perception from a 0.5% salt solution had a 6.8 odds ratio (non-significant). 7) By logistic regression analysis independent risk factors for stroke in males were found to be hypertention, age, and obesity. The study was limited because number of subjects was too small for practical implications. However, like as other results, this study suggest that people should be advised to control hypertension, and obesity since these carry a risk of stroke.
Natural gas is one of clean fuels that can replace petroleum-based fuels, because it has low exhaust emission, comparatively high thermal efficiency and abundant deposits. In this addition, owing to high octane number and wide lean flammability limit, it has a strong point to increase the compression ratio. For this reason, the research is being actively executed to increase the generating power and thermal efficiency of the engine by raising the compression ratio through utilization of high octane number relevant to development of CNG engine. In this study, 0.63L single cylinder diesel engine has been used to alter easily compression ratio. Compression ratio has gotten under control by modifying the thickness of gasket between cylinder head and block without major structural modifications. As the result, as compression ratio has increased, generating power and fuel consumption ratio have been improved. As for emission concentration, as compression ratio has increased, THC concentration has been decreased while exhause concentration of NOx increased. In case compression ratio has excessively increased, brake output decrease and cycle variation have been increased. As the result acquired by analyzing brake output, fuel consumption ratio, cycle variation and exhaust, the engine driving condition has acquired $\varepsilon=13$ as the optimal compression ratio in this study.
