Challenges of Korean organic rice farming - practices, economic performances and implications from the case study of Jeonnam province

  • EFA production systems have through necessity resulted in the development of innovative practices for weed, pest and diseases control, for example, using ducks and snails for weed control in paddy fields. These practices began to be introduced in the early 1990's and the techniques have become more popular and have been adapted to suit regional conditions. In this study, the production practices, productivity and economic performances of organic and non-chemical rice farming adopting ducks and snails for weed control were compared. In the production practices, Korean organic and non-chemical farming seem to have several concerns in terms of sustainability. It comprises lack of resistant variety use and rotational cropping system as well as high dependency upon external inputs such as organic fertilizer and farming materials for pest control. The production level of organic farming is approximately similar level but 20% higher income than non-chemical farming, while, when it was compared with conventional farming organic farming showed 20% lower productivity but 20% higher income. Organic farming shows 15% to 18% higher profits than non-chemical farming as the snail-using organic farming tends to have higher income and lower input costs than duck-using organic farming. This may encourage more farmers to convert to organic production using these techniques than simply non-chemical farming in the future. This organic conversion could be more promoted by policy intervention. However, it may result in increased supply and therefore decreased prices for organic rice in the long term unless further market demand occurs. Balanced policy measures considering production as well as marketing and consumption are urgently required for the sustainable development of organic farming.

Sign-Extension Overhead Reduction by Propagated-Carry Selection (전파캐리의 선택에 의한 부호확장 오버헤드의 감소)

  • To reduce the area and power consumption in constant coefficient multiplications, the constant coefficient can be encoded using canonic signed digit(CSD) representation. When the partial product terms are added depending on the nonzero bit(1 or -1) positions in the CSD-encoded multiplier, all sign bits are properly extended before the addition takes place. In this paper, to reduce the overhead due to sign extension, a new method is proposed based on the fact that carry propagation in the sign extension part can be controlled such that a desired input bit can be propagated as a carry. Also, a fixed-width multiplier design method suitable for CSD multiplication is proposed. As an application, 43-tap filbert transformer for SSB/BPSK-DS/CDMA is implemented. It is shown that, about 16∼28% adders can be saved by the proposed method compared with the conventional methods.

Design, Analysis and Implementation of Energy-efficient Broadcast MAC Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most energy saving asynchronous MAC protocols are custom tailored for unicast communications only. However, broadcast protocols are very commonly used in WSNs for a variety of functionalities, such as gathering network topology information, event monitoring and query processing. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power asynchronous broadcast MAC protocol called Alarm Broadcast (A-CAST). A-CAST employs the strobe preamble that specifies the residual waiting time for the following data transmission. Each receiver goes back to sleep upon hearing the strobe preamble for the residual time duration, to conserve energy and to wake up just before data transmission starts. We compute the energy consumption of A-CAST via rigorous mathematical analysis. The analytic results show that A-CAST outperforms B-CAST, a simple broadcast extension of the well-known B-MAC. We also implement A-CAST on sensor motes and evaluated its performance through real experiments. Our experimental results show that A-CAST reduces the energy consumption by up to 222% compared to the previously proposed protocols.

Performance Analysis of Switching Strategy in LTE-A Heterogeneous Networks

  • Nowadays, energy saving has become a hot topic and information and communication technology has become a major power consumer. In long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) networks, heterogeneous deployments of low-power nodes and conventional macrocells provide some new features, such as coverage extension, throughput enhancement, and load balancing. However, a large-scale deployment of low-power nodes brings substantial energy consumption and interference problems. In this paper, we propose a novel switching strategy (NS), which adaptively switches on or off some low-power nodes based on the instantaneous load of the system. It is compatible with the microcells' load balancing feature and can be easily implemented on the basis of existing LTE-A specifications. Moreover, we develop an analytical model for analyzing the performance of system energy consumption, block rate, throughput, and energy efficiency. The performance of NS is evaluated by comparison with existing strategies. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that NS not only has a low block rate, but also achieves a high energy efficiency.

The Impact of Plant-Based Non-Dairy Alternative Milk on the Dairy Industry

  • Vegetarians have claimed and actively promoted the advantages of plant-based alternative milks as the best option for human nutrition and health, compared to the natural dairy milk. However, numerous scientific evidences and reports have demonstrated that the natural milk possesses more beneficial nutrients and bioactive components than artificially manufactured plant-derived milks. The biochemical and nutritional advantages and functionalities of natural dairy milk cannot be replaced by man-made or crafted plant-based beverage products. On the other hand, the tremendous increase in production and consumption of the plant-based alternative milks in recent years has led a serious business downturn in traditional roles and stability of the dairy industry, especially in the major dairy producing Western countries. Although plant-based milk alternatives may have some benefits on nutrition and health of certain consumers, the plant-derived alternative milks may not overshadow the true values of natural milk. Milk is not a high fat and high cholesterol food as animal meat products. Unlike plant-based alternative milks, natural milk contains many bioactive as well as antiappetizing peptides, which can reduce body weight. It has proven that taking low-fat, cultured and lactase treated milk and dairy products with other diversified nutritionally balanced diets have been shown to be healthier dietary option than plant-based milk/foods alone.

  • Fast decision support systems and accurate diagnosis have become significant in the rapidly growing healthcare sector. As the number of disparate medical IoT devices connected to the human body rises, fast and interrelated healthcare data retrieval gets harder and harder. One of the most important requirements for the Healthcare Internet of Things (HIoT) is semantic interoperability. The state-of-the-art HIoT systems have problems with bandwidth and latency. An extension of cloud computing called fog computing not only solves the latency problem but also provides other benefits including resource mobility and on-demand scalability. The recommended approach helps to lower latency and network bandwidth consumption in a system that provides semantic interoperability in healthcare organizations. To evaluate the system's language processing performance, we simulated it in three different contexts. 1. Polysemy resolution system 2. System for hyponymy-hypernymy resolution with polysemy 3. System for resolving polysemy, hypernymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and holonymy. In comparison to the other two systems, the third system has lower latency and network usage. The proposed framework can reduce the computation overhead of heterogeneous healthcare data. The simulation results show that fog computing can reduce delay, network usage, and energy consumption.

Rice Preference Differences in Subjects Taking Breakfast Regularly and Skipping Breakfast in Kyeonggi-do Residence (아침식사 여부에 따른 쌀음식 섭취 형태 및 선택 - 경기지역 아침출근자를 중심으로 -)

  • Carbohydrate intake is decreasing along with the reduction of rice consumption among the Korean population. There is an increasing trend of diet-related degenerative diseases with the increased consumption of animal food, and therefore, the increase of animal food intake can be considered as one of causes of the diet-related disease. The objective of this study is to investigate the differences in rice preference and breakfast patterns between the subjects have breakfast regularly and those skipping it. One thousand participants were selected by the stratified sample method from the primary, middle, high school and college, and company workers from 24 cities of Kyeonggi-do. The interviewing procedure was carried by regional home extension workers. Approximately half participants (49.9%) were under the age of 20. Although 86% of the subjects considered eating breakfast good for health. only 46.4% of the subjects had breakfast regularly (HB). The rest of them skipped breakfast (SB) more than twice a week. The proportion of subjects hiving no breakfast were 9.3% of male and 12.2% of female subjects. The main reason for not having breakfast was due to the limited time. For their breakfast 85% of the HB ate boiled rice with the side dishes. More subjects in SB (27.8%) preferred the boiled rice with various grains for breakfast than those of HB (21.8%). The subjects in HB (65.5%) preferred boiled plein rice more than those of SB (56.9%). In cases they must have breakfast, 47.7% of the subjects wanted rice with the side dishes,24.2% preferred rice ball or rice roll with laver, 10.5% preferred a rice beverage. More subjects in HB (59.8%) wanted rice with side dishes than those in SB (36.9%). It was found out that selecting rice at the breakfast is still the main choice. Diverse ready-to-eat rice menus have to be developed to increase the rice consumption, specially to increase breakfast eating frequencies of SB through saving time and effort. A Low Power Voltage Controlled Oscillator with Bandwidth Extension Scheme (대역폭 증가 기법을 사용한 저전력 전압 제어 발진기)

  • This paper introduces a low-power voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO) with filters that consist of resistors and capacitors. The proposed VCO contains a 5-stage current mode buffer, and each buffer cell has a resistor-capacitor filter that connects input and output terminals. The filter adds a zero to the buffer cell. Because the zero moves the oscillation condition to high frequencies, the proposed VCO can generate a high frequency clock with low power consumption. The proposed circuit has been designed with 0.18 ㎛ CMOS process. The power consumption is 9.83 mW at 2.7 GHz. The proposed VCO shows 3.64 pJ/Hz in our simulation study, whereas the conventional circuit shows 4.79 pJ/Hz, indicating that our VCO achieves 24% reduction in power consumption.

Assessment of electricity demand at domestic level in Balochistan, Pakistan

  • Electricity is basic need for country development. But at the present time proper planning and policy is require at high pace for power generation network extension due to the increasing population growth rate. Present study aimed to analyze the present and future demand for electricity at household level in Province of Balochistan of Pakistan via simulation modeling. Data of year 2004-2005 was used as baseline data for electricity consumption to predict future demand of electricity at both rural and urban domestic level up to subsequent 30 years, with help of LEAP software. Basically three scenarios were created to run software. One scenario was Business-As-Usual and other two were green scenarios i.e., solar and wind energy scenarios. Results predicted that by using alternative energy sources, demand for electricity will be fulfill and will also reduce burden on non-renewable energy sources due to the greater potential for solar and wind energy present in Balochistan.

Manufacture of Antimicrobial Paper Using Food Preservative (식품보존제를 이용한 항균지 제조)

  • The functions of food packaging are not only prevention from physical damage and loss during carrying and transportation, but also extension of shelf-life by adding antimicrobial substrate in packaging materials. Consumption of active packaging is gradually increasing. With different dosage of potassium sorbate(P.S.), the food preservative agent, antimicrobial papers were made by internal and external application of starch. The antimicrobial action of the paper was analyzed by the halo test and the shake flask method. The mechanical properties and strength were also measured. Antimicrobial papers adding P.S. showed higher values in tensile index than adding starch. The antimicrobial paper using starch showed similar microbe decreasing rate as that using P.S. Though microbe decreasing rate was 21.9%, it showed possibility to make antimicrobial paper using food preservative.
