  • The purpose of this study is to analyze empirically the influences of different types of household income and asset in the consumption expenditures of homeowners and lessees with deposit. The data used in this study were the 1996 Korea Household Panel Study. 1,512 households data were selected for the final analysis. The statistical methods adopted for data analysis were frequency, percentage, one-way ANOVA, crosstabs, multiple regression analysis, and chow-test. The results are as follows: (1) There were the differences between three groups in the expenditure levels of each consumption category and the shares of each consumption category of total expenditures. (2) The change of labor income influenced more significantly consumption expenditures of homeowners and lessees with deposit, compared to changes of different types of household income. Also homeowners and lessees with deposit changed their consumption expenditures in different ways to changes of various types of household income. (3) Homeowners increased more significantly their consumption expenditures to increase of net asset than lessees with deposit.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the clothing consumption expenditures by the business cycles in Korea during the period of first quarter of 1979 to second quarter of 1998. Business cycles were examined using data GNP from the National Accounts published by the Bank of Korea and clothing expenditures from the monthly statistics of Korea published by the National Statistical Office of Korea. Data were analyzed by regression analysis standard deviation sample cross-correlation coefficient and skewness statistics. The main results are as follows. 1. During the period of 1979.I-1998.II GNP and per-person consumption expenditures for clothing and shoes have continuously increased except during 1980 and the recent depression of the national economy. Clothing expenditures dropped severely during the two recent depression of the national economy. Clothing expenditure dropped severely during the two depression periods. Clothing expenditures were the highest in the fourth quarter and the lowest in the third quarter of the year. 2. According to the results of the regression analysis the business cycles had a significant influence on the clothing expenditures. the volatility of the clothing expenditure was 2.60 times higher than that of the business cycles. 3. Clothing expenditures displayed procyclical fluctuation and coincident movement to the business cycles. Also clothing expenditures showed an unsymmetric behavior over the expansion phases and contraction phases of the business cycles. That is the clothing expenditures increased slowly in the expansion phases and decreased quickly and severely in the contraction phases of the business cycles.

  • During the past three decades, there have been drastic changes in many fields in Korea. Social and economic changes which occurred meantime have influenced clothing expenditures of Korean consumers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of clothing expenditures and its determinants in Korea during the period of 1965 to 1993. In particular, the impacts of income and price on clothing expenditures were examined using data from the National Acccounts published by the Bank of Korea as well as Urban Household Economy Survey published by the Bureau of National Statistics. Per-person consumption expenditures for clothing and shoes (CSX) in permanent price generally increased in accordance with the increase of income since 1965. From 1978 to 1984, however, there was a slight decrease in clothing expenditures in spite of the continuous increase in income, due to the depression of national economy. The proportion of CSX in total consumer spendings has decreased continuously since 1978. In recent years, CSX take only 5% of national aggregate consumption expenditures, while consumption expenditures of urban consumers is 8%. The expenditures for traditional clothing and fabrics for home- sewing decreased most. The results of this study should provide a broader view of the pattern of clothing consumption by Korean consumers. Moreover, the findings can suggest how social and economic changes of a society affect consumers' clothing expenditures.

  • This study investigates the effects of changes in price, total consumption expenditures and economic sitations on Korean household demands for clothing and footwear using time-series data. The clothing and footwear category was reclassified as clothing, footwear and clothing services items for the demand analysis. This study utilized the Linearized Almost Ideal Demand System (LAIDS) model to analyze household demand. The results indicate that price and total consumption expenditures are significantly related to Korean household consumption expenditure allocations for clothing and footwear items. The effects of the IMF bailout crisis in 1997 and the global financial crisis in 2008 on household expenditure shares for clothing and footwear items were very weak and statistically insignificant. All the demand elasticities were estimated with respect to total consumption expenditures and prices. Clothing was expenditure elastic (greater than one) and other items were classified as inelastic. All the own price elasticities of demands were negative (other than clothing). Through the estimations of cross price elasticity the relationships between the demands for items and other item prices were evaluated (i.e., substitutes and complements).

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the determinants of household demand for credit and to test the effects of credit outstandings and credit repayments on consumption expenditures. To investigate the relationship between credit use and consumption expenditures, a theoretical consumption expenditure model including credit outstandings and credit repayments is developed. With 1991 Report of National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure, two empirical models are tested using OLS. The results show that household demand for credit is determined by household income, debt burden, household size, age and squared age of household head and ratio of home ownership. It is also found that credit outstandings affect consumption expenditures positively while credit repayments affect consumption expenditures negatively.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the determinants of at-home laver consumption expenditures using the data from a survey of households implemented in 2009. It happened that non-response ratios of monthly expenditures on dry laver and flavored laver among sampled households are 18.8% and 25.6%. Accordingly, this study tries to analyze the determinants affecting at-home laver consumption expenditures by using type II tobit model, one of sample selection models, to deal with sample selection bias caused from non-response data. Analysis results show the age variable positively affects expenditures on dry laver but negatively contributes to expenditures on flavored laver. In addition, the household size, the household's income, the degree of preference for laver have positive relationships with both expenditures. Household size elasticity and income elasticity of the expenditure on dry laver are estimated as 0.220 and 0.251. In the case of flavored laver, these elasticities are estimated as 0.484 and 0.261. Such analysis results can provide information on division of the at-home laver consumption market into groups with high willingness to expense and implementation of detailed marketing strategies to increase at-home laver consumption. The methodology of this study can be applied to consumer preference analysis on other marine products and other analyses on sample with non-response data in the fishery research.

  • This study aimed to quantify antibiotic consumption and expenditures for acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) (J00-J06) in outpatients from 2009 to 2011. We used WHO ATC classification and DDDs in measuring antibiotic consumption. National Health Insurance and Medical Aid claims data were analyzed. Antibiotic consumption has decreased from 4.44 DDD/1,000inhabitants/day in 2009, to 4.43 in 2010 and 3.74 in 2011. The estimated expenditures were 8,206 won/1,000inhabitants/day in 2009, 8,379 in 2010, and 7,004 in 2011. Clinics accounted for 89.8% and 86.0% of antibiotic consumption and expenditures respectively for the acute URIs in 2011. We need to monitor antibiotic consumption consistently, and promote judicious antibiotic use.

  • This paper is to determine the clothing and footwear of urban household consumption expenditures and an analysis of historical data from relevant literature. Particularly, time-series and cross sectional analysis techniques are adopted in analysing the patterns of clothing and footwear consumption expenditures of urban households. Finally, this paper estimates consumption expenditures in the future by comparing these revealed data with the Korea and Japan. Annual Report on the family Income and Expenditure Survey and M.R.A. in S.P.S.S. were used. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The proportion of the clothing and footwear expenditure has decreased with the increase of income in urban household during 1976-1987. 2.1) Household consumption function by Income group, the Lower group is higher than the other group. 2) Household consumption function by Occupation of household head. Income elasticity estimation in administrative managerial workers is higher than the other group. 3) Household consumption function by Family size. Income elasticity estimation in 6 Persons is higher than the other group. But 4 Persons is higher in 1986. 4) Household consumption function by Age of household head. Income elasticity estimation in 50 Years and over is higher than the other group. 3. Comparison of characteristics of clothing and footwear consumption expenditures in Korea and Japan were M.R.A. Generally, the priority correlation order for Korea is Outwear, Sweaters and Shirt, Other clothing. For Japan, the order is Sweaters and Shirts, Underwear, Services.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the consumption expenditure patterns and the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditure between single-mother families and two-parent families. From the 2001 Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted by Korea National Statistical Office (KNSO), 693 single-mother families and 14,439 two-parent families were selected. A t-test was completed to examine how the expenditure patterns of two types of families differ. Total expenditures and expenditures on 11 consumption categories were modeled as functions of permanent income and other socioeconomic variables. Also, dummy variable interaction technique was used to examine whether the independent variables differently affected the expenditures between single-mother families and two-parent families. The results of this study indicated that there were differences between single-mother and two-parent families in the levels and shares of expenditures of each consumption category, and the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditures. Single-mother families had spent less than did two-parent families in each consumption category. However, single-mother families had significantly higher expenditure shares for food at home, shelter, utilities, apparel and shoes, and education. Income elasticities for food at home, shelter, utilities, and education of single-mother families were significantly larger than those of two- parent families.
