This study examined how the differences in household characteristics influence consumer expenditure patterns. The Price-Scaling AIDS model with household income and expenditure survey data were used for the analysis. The results showed that the income elasticity of the service items is greater than non-service items, indicating an increase in higher demand of service items with the same increase in household income. The household expenditure patterns vary according to the commodities, holding age and income level. The so-called traditional pattern, which emphasizes spending for non-service items, changed to the one with a higher expenditure ratio for service items. Such a change in household expenditure patterns naturally derives the expansion of the relevant service market; hence, the growth of the related service industry. This highlights the need to formulate an appropriate response from the supply side that deals with the changes in the service market.
Using the data from the Family Income & Expenditure Survey, this study investigated (1)the factors determining the level of burden of the private educational expenditure in households; (2) the influences of the level of the burden of private educational expenditure on the other household expenditures. For the analysis of data Chi-square, GLM, Multinomial legit, and Seemingly Unrelated Regression were applied. The major findings were: (1) The factors associated with the burden of private educational expenditure were the number of students by each of the school levels, housing tenure, location of residence, educational attainment of householder; (2) Households with the lower level of burden of the private educational expenditure adjusted the allocation of the expenditure shares of food, utility, and transportation and did not reduce the levels of consumption. Households with the higher level of burden of the private educational expenditure adjusted the extensive ranges of the household expenditure shares and reduced the levels of consumption.
This paper attempts to investigate and analyze the change of the proportion of discretionary consumption expenditure (DCE) of main consumer goods among total household expenditure from 1964 to 1986 in Korea by reorganizing various data, particularly "Annual Report of Citizen's Household Experditure in Sooul".The result of the author's analysis can be summarized as follows. 1. The analysis shows that while the proportion of DCE in food has been increased during this period as the Korean economy developed, the value of income elasticity for beverages, liguor, out-door eating and processed food products which consist of major part of food, has been successively decreased. And also, though the absolute value of income elasticity for grain products has been increased, its proportion among total expenditure has been successively decreased. From these trends, we can conclude that general consumption pattern has a tendency to change from dependence on main grain products to the more utilization of out-door eating or processed food products. 2. The ratio of DEC of furnitures to housing expenditure has played a role of indicator of business cycle, reflecting the consumers' psychological expectation fro general economic trend. 3. In case of the proportion of DCE of clothes, there has been no great change. 4. As for as DCE of sundry expenditure is concerned, there has been no-great change in The proportion itself/ However. as the ratio of sundry expenditure to total household expenditure has been greatly increased, expenditure for leisure disproportionately increased. 5. The proportion of total DCE in total consumption expenditure, as in the case of housing, has been increased, which coincided exactly with business cyele appeared during this period. In fact, when Korea economy experienced a severe recession in 193 and 1980, that proportion deeply went down respectively, and again went up after those years. Accordingly, we can generalize that the size of DCE deperds on the formation of consumer's psychological expectation toward economy, which confirms George Katona's early proposition.
The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting the purchases of well-being tea drinks based on the analysis of demographic characteristics, well-being oriented consumer behaviors, and consumer consciousness toward well-being tea drinks. The subjects of this study were undergraduates and graduate students in Seoul. The findings were summarized as follows: 1. Well-being oriented consumer behavior patterns were categorized in three factors; non-dietary life, selective dietary life, and regular/temperate behavior and consumer consciousness toward well-being tea drinks were categorized in two factors; habit/ familiarity and health/ economical efficiency. 2. Multiple regression analysis was used for finding out factors affecting the purchases of well-being tea drinks; independent variables were demographic characteristics(sex, monthly average family income and the amount of personal expenditure), well-being oriented consumer behavior factors and consumer consciousness factors toward well-being tea drinks. Weekly purchase frequency of well-being tea drinks was defined as a dependent variable. As a result, the purchases of well-being tea drinks were influenced in order of regular/temperate behavior, the consciousness of health/ economical efficiency, the amount of personal expenditure and the consciousness of habit/ familiarity. Especially, regular/temperate behavior negatively affected the purchases of well-being tea drinks.
This study examined the factors affecting college students' money management behaviors according to credit card usage. The data were collected from 481 college students in Busan and Gyeongnam areas by a self-administered questionnaire. Frequencies, Cronbach's Alpha, factor analyses, t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and regression analyses were conducted by SPSS WINDOWS. The results from this study were as follows. First, there were significant differences between credit card usage group and non-usage group in the means for future preparation, stingy attitude, and planned expenditure. However, there was no significant difference in the mean of money management behaviors. Second, for the credit card usage group, the significant variables affecting money management behaviors included sex, grade, experience of consumer education, father's occupation, monthly household income, future preparation, stingy attitude, methods of emotional change, planned expenditure, and negative recognition. On the other hand, for the non-usage group, grade, experience of consumer education, father's occupation, way of success, future preparation, stingy attitude, planned expenditure, and conditional permission were significant. These results imply that financial management education including values about money and consumption patterns should be conducted.

This study grouped on/offline browsing consumer types according to on/offline browsing consumer behavior and investigated the differences in shopping orientation, impulse buying, and fashion goods expenditure ratio in on/offline markets based on on/offline browsing types. Data were obtained from 379 consumers aged 10 to 40 in Daejeon Korea. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, cluster analysis and ANOVA. The result were as following. First, respondents were classified into four group by on/offline browsing behavior (high offline browsing group, low on/offline browsing group, high on/offline browsing group, and high online browsing group). Second, there were significant differences among groups in the shopping orientation (except for efficient shopping orientation). Third, groups showed differences in impulse buying and fashion goods expenditure ratio in on/offline markets. This information will benefit marketers in the use of multichannel consumer strategies.
This study investigated the association between the expenditures for childrearing and the intention to have the second childbirth applying the recursive equation models. The major results were as follows. First, more than half of the households with one child did not have an intention to have the second childbirth. Second, about 40% of the household expenditure was spent for childrearing. About 36% of the childrearing expenditure was spent on the childcare and education, and about 64% on purchase of goods and services for child. Third, the variables which had a significant effect on the intention to have the second childbirth were child's age, mother's education, father's income, the private educational expenditure, and consumption expenditure for child. The intention to have the second childbirth did not have a significant effect on the level of childrearing expenditure. The implications for the family policies were suggested.
This study examines the economic status and effect variables of expenditure of single elderly households using the 1996 Expenditure Survey of Urban Families from the Korea National Office. This study examined gender differences in total house income, expenditure and effect variables of expenditure. The results show that women had lower economic condition than men and that income is the most effective variable of expenditure for both. The result imply the need of employment and active support to improve household income especially for women who have a higher possibility of poverty.
This study investigated changes in the household expenditure for food outside home using the time-series family expenditure data during 1982-2002. Major findings were as following: first, expenditure for food outside home had been increasing, while over all level of the food expenditure had been decreasing; second, two thirds of the total amount of expenditure for food outside home were for regular meals; the proportion of food outside home which were paid to alcohols and other beverages have been decreasing since 1999; lastly, over the half of the total expenditure for food outside home had been spent on Korean food. Based on the results implications for consumer trends for food and food industry were provided.
The purposes of this study were to estimate the effect of related factors such as cultural values and individual characteristics to consumer attitude, and furthermore to estimate the effect of consumer attitude and related factors such as price perception and individual characteristics to consumption behavior(expenditure) of food away from home. To do this, the data was collected from college students and a 2 step approach by using LIMDEP program was applied to estimate the structural equation model. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Consumer attitude toward food away from home was found to be significantly influenced by some cultural values such as health, sensibility, socially responsible consumption and religion, and individual characteristics such as sex and pocket money. If they perceived more positively about the value of health, sensibility and religion, they would be likely to have more positive attitude, while they perceived more negatively about the value of socially responsible consumption, they would be likely to have more negative attitude. In addition, if they were females and had much more pocket money, they would be more likely to have more positive attitude. 2) Expenditure of food away from home was found to be significantly influenced by age and pocket money, while consumer attitude did not have a significant impact on expenditure of food away from home at the second stage in the structural equation model. It might imply that consumption behavior of food away from home for college students would be more constrained by individual characteristics such as sex and economic capital.
