  • Recently in Korea, efforts are underway to enhance smart construction by implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) comprehensively across all sectors of the construction industry. This study focused on the adoption of BIM for prefab bridges currently executed in the industry and It examined the process of creating a BIM-based prefab bridge model that can support production. Additionally, it explored how prefab products made by manufacturers can be integrated with road alignments using BIM technology and how the DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) approach, which supports production based on designed information, can be adopted. The process of creating the prefab bridge model aims to shorten production time, reduce costs, and enhance quality by leveraging digital information related to design and manufacturing within the BIM framework

  • As plant market grows up, client demands to increase quality, technology and to reduce construction period. Due to the vast scale of the construction site and complexity of process, plant project can have some problems of communication among the project participants, the duplication of work, errors and rework. As a result those cause more costs, delay the construction schedule and reduce productivity and quality. Therefore, real-time communication between participants and real-time sharing of information such as material, equipment and construction are required in plant project site. This research aims to propose process and develop system using NFC(Near Field Communication) technology and augmented reality technology with mobile device for plant construction site. Administrators and operators are able to work efficiently using proposed process and system which create an environment designed to share and deliver information such as material, construction information.

  • This Study is about adoption of slab track on the new high speed railway line between Daegu and Busan. While ballast track currently used is easy to construct with low investment, the error margin of rail track occurs in the track due to the repetition load of the train. Therefore, repairs should be carried out all the time to put the railway track at the repair level or less. In addition, noise caused by such repairs has become a new social problem at night. Construction costs for slab track are about 1.3-1.5 times higher than those for ballast track. However, slab track will save labor costs by solving various problems of ballast track. In this regard, it is feasible to adopt slab track on the new high speed railway line between Daegu and Busan.

  • It is important to identify the exact target optical cable that a worker look for when he executes a cable construction work. Until now, An Optical cable identification work has been done by a manual pulling of an optical cable or by the method of using RF signals. But these methods not only consume much time and labor costs but also have a distance limit of the optical cable to identify. In this paper, we propose a method that uses the phase change signal of the optical interferometer to identify an optical cable. With the proposed method the field worker can have an efficient tool to prevent miscutting the optical cable and can also save operating costs.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has unprecedented impacts on different sectors around the globe. The effects observed in developing countries are even more severe. Some projects stopped while many have cost and time overrun issues. This paper conducted a case study on the COVID-19's effects on a hotel construction project in Nepal. The study reviewed the literature on COVID-19 and its impact on construction sectors and conducted a semi-structured interview with the project's personnel. The interview response was analysed and the contributing factors that impacted the project and its performance were identified. The paper found financial, operational, contractual, safety, and risk management issues in the hotel project. Overall, the project cost increased by 32% where the material cost increased by 35% and labor cost increased by 28%. This research discusses causes, measures, and provides a broad perspective of the problems, significant challenges, and opportunities associated with the effects of COVID-19 on the construction industry. The Owner as well as the Contractors incurred added costs because of COVID-19. The paper identified contributing factors and presented the challenges which could be used as opportunities to minimize unforeseen impacts of the pandemics in near future. The lesson learned from this case study was that the labor cost and materials cost could have been minimized if the Owner and the Contractor had established alternative resources such as using locally available labor, materials, and alternative suppliers.

  • LH Corporation uses the construction waste disposal fee standard, of which the model was developed a long time ago. Therefore, this model is problematic because it needs to reflect waste treatment facilities' technological development and environmental conditions. In this study, the estimated manpower and costs required for the process operation of waste treatment facilities were analyzed, followed by the proposed estimation criteria. This improved standard model can be used as a cost calculation standard for the recycling and treatment of construction waste in public institutions. The study also suggests that an increase in waste treatment costs is needed.

  • The repair and maintenance cost of domestic public rental housing is an issue of considerable interest and growing financial concern. This paper suggests a quantity-based model as an alternative method for predicting costs, instead of the conventional model which is based on actual cost data. Furthermore, this paper provides a forecast of the repair costs incurred each year during the multi family house's maintenance phase (40 years). The recently changed the long-term repair plan and quality-improved interior materials were considered into the research. In order to estimate the cost of maintenance work, 5 sample apartments were selected and analyzed. The repair and maintenance cost from the case studies was converted to cost per household and per floor area for general use. On the other hand, the net present value method was applied to reflect the effect of time. We expect that the results will help to establish expenditure plans that are more effective for public rental housing in the maintenance stage.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) involves the integration of equipment information and component parameters across various engineering disciplines. The complex processes during model construction can lead to human errors. Furthermore, design changes often occur at various stages of the building's lifecycle, requiring designers and modelers to make timely modifications, resulting in significant costs and time consumption. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design is considerably more complex than architectural design. Therefore, this study focuses on the automatic generation of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ductwork model with MEP design through BIM. Dynamo, a visual programming language (VPL), offers features such as arrangement, connectivity, and scalability. Thus, this research applied Dynamo to develop the Automatic Ductwork BIM Model Generation System. The BIM model generated by the system facilitates collaborative efforts and enables the analysis of HVAC System Conflicts. The system extracts coordinates for air handling units, supply air, and exhaust air outlets. The equipment is automatically positioned based on these coordinates, and the corresponding duct paths are generated by reading CAD files. At each duct connection point, appropriate fittings are fabricated according to specifications and dimensions. The duct system is configured with distinct colors, and the results are visualized in Revit, facilitating HVAC system clash detection in the future. This study undertakes a real project to validate the proposed system and processes and assesses its impact on modeling efficiency, real-time responsiveness, and accuracy, realizing automated ductwork generation.

  • It costs high in both memory usage and time consuming to sample the space to compute charge density and calculate electric field on that with large size of plasma data. In real-time and interactive application, accelerating the compute time is critical problem. In this paper, we suggest new method to visualize electric field by using convolution theorem, and the parallel computing to accelerate computing time by using GPGPU. We conduct a simulation that compare running time between the methods with convolution and without convolution. We discussed the method of visualization of multivariate data in three dimensional space using colored volume rendering and surface construction.

  • This paper consists in a study of a new contructive sequence of road viaducts with Movable Scaffolding System (MSS) using numerical tools based on finite element method (FEM). Traditional and new sequences are being used in Spain to build viaducts with MSS. The new sequence permits an easier construction of one span per week but implies some other issues related to the need of two prestressing stages per span. In order to improve the efficiency of the new sequence by reducing the number of prestressing stages per span, two solutions are suggested in this study. Results show that the best solution is to introduce the 100% of the prestressing force at the self-supporting core in order to improve the road viaduct construction with movable scaffolding system by reducing execution time without increasing economic costs.
