A Case Study on Productivity Analysis and Methods Improvement for Masonry Work

  • In the construction industry, a great deal of research has been focused on productivity improvement because a minor change in labor productivity can often make the difference between a profit and a loss. This study shows how productivity measurement methods can be applied in practice, step by step, to analyze and identify potential problems both in productivity and methods performance for masonry work. A work sampling technique was conducted to determine the nature and extent of an observable activity as an aid to measuring overall performance. Also, a method productivity delay model was used to identify non-productivity in individual cycle times. From the work sampling technique, it was found that the masonry crew had a Labor Utilization Factor of 47.1%, and from the videotape analysis, it was found that the material and dumpster location need to be adjusted to reduce the travelling distance. We have found that efforts to improve the productivity of masonry work should be focused almost exclusively on machine and labor delays, based on the result from the method productivity delay model.

Framework of Non-Nuclear Methods Evaluation for Soil QC and QA in Highway Pavement Construction

  • This study introduces a methodology to evaluate different types of non-nuclear technologies to see how they are competitive to the nuclear technology for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) in soil condition measurement for highway pavement construction. The non-nuclear methods including the Electrical Density Gauge (EDG) and the Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) were tested for their performance against a nuclear gauge, and traditional methods were used as baselines. An innovative way of comparing a deflection gauge to a density gauge was introduced. Results showed that the nuclear gauge generally outperformed the non-nuclear gauge in accuracies of soil density and moisture content measurements. Finally, a framework was developed as a guideline for evaluating various types of non-nuclear soil gauges. From other perspectives rather than accuracy, it was concluded that the non-nuclear gauges would be better alternative to the nuclear gauge when the followings are considered: (1) greater life-cycle cost savings; (2) elimination of intense federal regulations and safety/security concerns; and (3) elimination of licensing and intense training.

  • Global construction projects manifest more risks than do other industries. Often, firms doing business in construction markets find these risks intimidating. To secure corresponding profits, many global contractors attempt to forecast the effects of risks and establish risk management strategies. However, one key problem with present-day risk management methods is that they are basically analytical or mathematical-oriented approaches which are not easy to adopt in real business. Based on preliminary investigations and evaluations of current tools, this research elicits more practical algorithms for risk checklist by constructing risk scenarios over the whole period of project execution. For the application of the algorithms, a "SE/RF" (Source-Event/Regular-Floating) checklist is suggested, which sorts out risk sources and their subsequent events, as well as dividing various risk factors into either regular or floating categories. In addition, the "PIS" (Probability-Impact-Significance) method is introduced, in place of traditional "PI" (Probability-Impact) methods, by adding the additional criterion of "risk significance" to determine the degree of risk exposure in a more realistic way. As a result, we draw the significant finding that the "PIS" method presents a closer evaluation regarding degree of risk exposure as compared to the level of expert judgments than those from traditional methods. Finally, we provide an integrated procedure for international project risk management with all of the research achievements being incorporated.

  • The government's financial subsidy system for the construction project of urban rail transit needs to be revised. In 1998, the central government raised its subsidy rate to 50$\%$ of the total cost of construction. The 'method for differentiating subsidies depending on construction type and transit System' is suggested here, so that a subsidy rate can be raised for the construction of Light Rail Transit, which costs less to construct. Such methods will force local governments to make decisions regarding construction method and project size in a more rational manner.

  • This study deals with problems of technical assistance through accidents analysis and questionnaires on small-sized construction sites which are difficult to understand real condition and administrate legally and indicated following efficient methods of technical assistance. (1) Ensuring access to the small-sized construction sites. (2) Delegation technical assistance service to civilian and supporting selected. (3) Raising of the person's safe consciousness concerned with the small-sized construction sites. (4) Safety consulting for the head office of small-sized construction sites.

  • Construction schedule plays a key role in project management due to its influence on the project success. Thus, it is important to identify factors affecting construction delay. The major objective of this study is to identify and evaluate factors affecting construction delay in apartment projects in Vietnam. The findings confirmed that financial difficulties of owners and contractors, contractors without adequate experience, non-available materials on time, slow site clearance, inappropriate construction methods, defective works and reworks, and lack of capable owners/project managers are the major causes of delay in apartment projects.

  • 현재의 건설사업 과정은 사업 참여자들 간의 비효율적인 의사소통이 소유자의 요구를 정확히 반영하지 못하기 때문에 효율적인 건설관리가 어려운 상황이다. 이를 해결하기 위해 최근 참가자들 간의 수평적 관계 형성을 통해 협력과 신뢰구축을 가능하게 하는 린 건설기반 통합 프로젝트 발주방식이 적용되고 있다. 린 건설 기반의 IPD는 건설 산업의 생산성 향상에 효과적임에도 불구하고, 기존 연구에서는 린 건설 기반의 IPD 를 적용하는 구체적인 방법이 부족하다. 본 연구는 린 건설 기반의 IPD 프로젝트가 어떻게 성공했는지 분석했다. 이 연구는 IPD 프로젝트가 성공으로 이어질 수 있는 영향 요인을 도출하기 위해 먼저 기존 연구와 보고서를 통해 분석되었다. 영향 요인을 기반으로 단일 사례 분석을 통해 실제 적용 방법을 분석하였다. 연구의 범위는 이전의 분석을 바탕으로 IPD 프로젝트의 각 성공요인에 대한 적용 방법을 제시하는 것으로 제한되었다. 본 연구는 향후 국내 건설 기반 IPD 프로젝트의 실행에 사용될 수 있다.

  • 자원개발 등의 이유로 시베리아나 알래스카와 같은 극한(寒)지 진출이 국내는 물론 세계적으로도 증가 추세에 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 남극 제2기지 건설사업을 대상으로, 극한지 건설사업 진출을 위한 위성영상 활용방안을 도출하고자 하였다. 남극을 포함한 극한지는 지역적 특성상 원격지이고 접근이 어렵다는 특성에 따라 위성영상의 활용은 필수적이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 극한지 건설 프로세스 전반에 대한 검토와 극한지 위성영상 활용사례 분석 및 관련 논문 등 문헌리뷰를 통해 건설 단계별 위성영상 활용가능항목 및 활용방안을 제시 하였다.

  • 국내 OSC가 활성화되기 위해서는 설계 및 엔지니어링, 공장제조, 현장조립 등 각 단계별로 적용되는 기술의 혁신도 중요하지만, 기존 건설 생산방식과 차별화되는 관리 및 운영방식의 개발도 필요하다. 하지만, 현재 국내에서 진행되고 있는 OSC 관련 연구는 공법 개발과 같은 기술개발 측면의 연구가 주를 이루며, OSC 프로젝트의 성공을 위한 관리 방안 도출과 관련한 연구는 미진한 실정이다. 따라서, OSC 프로젝트의 핵심성공요인의 명확한 이해에 기반한 프로젝트 관리 방안 도출에 대한 연구가 요구되는 바이다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 해외에서 선행된 OSC 프로젝트의 성공요인과 관련한 다수의 연구들을 분석하여 국내 OSC 프로젝트의 성공적 관리를 위한 핵심 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 통해 향후 국내에서 확산될 OSC 프로젝트의 성공 가능성 제고에 기여하고자 한다.
