  • Outside wall systems we lost much energy from the dew of thermal bridge and unsuitable adiabatic construction. The air vent wall system can make reduce cooling loads from the outside wall in summer. The basic concept is connected with buoyant force by the difference of density. An external surface of a wall absorbs solar radiation, and transfers it to the air in the cavity. The warmed air gets buoyant force. So the warmed air is released through the top opening and cooler outside air replaces the space in the cavity. So because of the cavity and the openings, the cooling load reduction by natural ventilation is believed to be considerable. The purpose of this study is finding optimal length of air cavity by numerical analyses.

  • These days, Apartment is altered oversized and high-rise through construction techniques development. Also, the cost of cooling and heating load would be expected by balcony expansion into inner space caused by legalization. In specially, HVAC systems of high-rise residential building almost apply to pre-existence techniques of middle and low residential building except for consideration and methods of the air inflow minimization into indoor through mechanical ventilation is used in ventilation system. From these cause, window systems of high-rise apartments stands high in estimation of components. Thus, purpose of this study is to make a comparative study through difference of window systems.

  • The drilled pier foundation is widely used to support transmission line structures due to its simplicity of construction. When this foundation type is used in conjunction with a single shaft or H-frame structure, it is subjected to a high overturning moment, combined with modest vertical and shear loads. Since the length and diameter of drilled piers are often governed by a maximum permissible deflection, many drilled piers being installed today are very conservatively designed. In this study, Five prototype field-tests (1/8 scale) have been conducted in order to determine the lateral resistance of drilled pier foundation for single pole structures. These test results reveal the test piers behaved essentially as rigid bodies in soil (6D) and the center of rotation of the pier were typically 0.6~0.4 of the pier depth below ground surface. Test results also show the relationship between the applied load and the deflection at the top of the pier is highly nonlinear.

  • In most drilled shafts construction sites, it is common, depending on the site condition, to use either water or slurry as fluids for maintaining stability of the holes, however, there are yet no design manuals by hole stability fluids. In this paper, in order to evaluate load transfer characteristics of the drilled shafts by hole stability fluids, two test piles are constructed over the soft ground of the lower Busan Bay based on the Bi-directional Pile Load Test. The test results showed that no ultimate states has found under the condition of applied loads with fresh water and slurry as hole fluids for drilled shafts. Then, the load transfer behavior were estimated with the data measured in fields and the effect of hole stability fluids were compared. All these results are presented in the paper.

  • Single-pole transmission structures which are supported by drilled shaft foundations are usually subjected to large overturning moments with modest vertical and lateral loads. To analyze the behavior of the drilled shaft under such loading conditions, an analytical model was developed based on beam-column and subgrade reaction methods. Field model tests were performed to calibrate the developed analytical model in which additional subgrade spring models were adopted. The field test results estimated from the calibrated analytical model were compared with those calculated by one spring model and other commercial program. According to the comparison study, the developed analytical model was proven to be a useful tool to analyze the laterally loaded behavior of foundations for single-pole structures.

  • In order to investigate recycling possibility as a construction material of oyster-shells, the geotechnical characteristics including permeability, confined compression and shear strength of crushed oyster shell were quantitatively examined in terms of fineness modulus and relative density of crushed oyster-shell. Experimental results show that the crushed oyster-shells are lighter than sand in weight, and have similar characteristics on permeability and shear strength to sandy soils. The oyster-shell can be considered as highly crushable material but not much crushable with existing high loads. Based on the laboratory test results, it is highly fudged that the crushed oyster-shell can be a substitute of sand as SCP materials.

  • The negative skin friction on piles, which are installed in currently consolidating soft deposits, creates significant problems on the stability of pile foundations. This study investigated whether or not the pile foundation designs were appropriate in soft deposits with large amount of consolidation settlement. The final settlements of the grounds along the pile depth were estimated by the soil parameters obtained from the laboratory tests and by the field-measured settlement curves, if they were available. The displacement of the piles along the pile depth was estimated by both the load transfer method and the numerical method. Both methods gave similar locations of neutral points and magnitudes of the maximum axial forces. The movements of the ground and the piles were compared to calculate the down drag acting on piles. For the piles whose bearing capacities were less than the design loads including the down drag, slip layer coatings and/or incrementing of the penetration depth into the bearing stratum were proposed to improve the piles capacities.

  • Synchronous wind-induced pressures, measured in wind-tunnel tests on model buildings instrumented with hundreds of pressure taps, are an invaluable resource for designing safe buildings efficiently. They enable a much more detailed, accurate representation of the forces and moments that drive engineering design than conventional tables and graphs do. However, the very large volumes of data that such tests typically generate pose a challenge to their widespread use in practice. This paper explains how a wavelet representation for the time series of pressure measurements acquired at each tap can be used to compress the data drastically while preserving those features that are most influential for design, and also how it enables incremental data transmission, adaptable to the accuracy needs of each particular application. The loss incurred in such compression is tunable and known. Compression rates as high as 90% induce distortions that are statistically indistinguishable from the intrinsic variability of wind-tunnel testing, which we gauge based on an unusually large collection of replicated tests done under the same wind-tunnel conditions.

  • Tall buildings are categorized as important structures because of the large number of occupants and high construction costs. The choice of competent lateral load resisting systems in tall buildings is of crucial importance. Bracing systems have long been an economic and effective method for resisting lateral loads in steel structures. However, there are some potential adverse aspects to bracing systems such as the limitations they inflict on architectural plans, uplift forces and poor performances in compression. in order to eliminate the mentioned problems and for cost optimization, in this paper, six 20-story steel buildings and frames with different types of bracing, i.e., conventional, mega-scale and buckling-restrained bracing (BRB) were analyzed. Linear and modal push-over analyses were carried out. The results pointed out that Mega-Scale Bracing (MSB) system has significant superiority over the conventional bracing type. The MSB system is 25% more economic. Some other advantages of MSB include: up to 63% less drift ratio, up to 38% better performance in lateral displacement, up to 100% stiffer stories, and about 50% smaller uplift forces. Moreover, MSB equipped with BRB attests even a better seismic behavior in the aforementioned parameters.
