  • A concentrically braced steel frame is a very efficient structural system because it requires relatively smaller amount of materials to resist lateral forces. However, primarily developed as a structural system to resist wind loads based on an assumption that the structure behaves elastically, a concentrically braced frame possibly experiences the deterioration in energy dissipation after brace buckling and the brittle failure of braces and connections when earthquake loads cause inelastic behavior. Consequently, plastic deformation is concentrated in the floor where brace buckling occurs first, which can lead to the rupture of the structure. This study suggests reinforcing H-shaped braces with non-welded cold-formed stiffeners to restrain flexure and buckling and resist tensile force and compressive force equally.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method, using the load amplification factor suggested by the KBC 2009 design code, for the evaluation of frame stability. For this purpose, the direct analysis method was performed for three-story-one-bay and five-story-three-bay unbraced steel frames with various notional loads, bending stiffness reductions, and factor B2s. The results of the analyses were compared with the results of the second-order inelastic analysis to evaluate the influence of the applied methods. The scale of the frame, the axial load ratio, and the axial load distribution pattern were added to the main parameters to investigate the external effects. The research results showed that the influence of the methods of application of the direct analysis method is not significant in the case of the required axial strength and the application of the additional notional loads; and that the application of the factor B2 with the story stiffness concept to the direct analysis method is appropriate for the required flexural strength.

  • A currently used roof green system with multi layers has a low constructability. Therefore a new integrated waterproof & root barrier sheet and roof green box unit system was developed using steel plate fixture and cone type fixture by electromagnetic induction heating method. This study was proceeded to evaluate adhesion performance of two types of fixtures on Engineering PE, TPO, PVC sheet in a normal condition, repeated heating and cooling condition. As a result, adhesion load on Engineering PE sheet showed the highest value. The adhesion loads of steel plate fixture showed higher value as heating temperature was getting higher. However adhesion loads of cone type fixture showed opposite tendency. Regarding to the test conditions, test results of normal condition, repeated heating and cooling condition showed same value. The cone type fixture using butyl tape showed 7 times lower adhesion load than that of cone type fixture using electromagnetic heating and 28% lower adhesion load in a repeated heating and cooling condition than a usual condition.

  • The $LCCO_2$ evaluation programs previously developed in Korea involve limitations in establishing strategies of reducing environmental loads to optimal level in a way to put in materials directly after designing. Therefore, this study has the purpose to extract and propose elements required for the establishment of highly accurate system by counteracting swiftly in a method with high energy efficiency over cost at planning stage. To that end, existing $LCCO_2$ evaluation programs in Korea and abroad were compared and analyzed, and in the planning stage, GEM-21P and Carbon-navigator intended for the establishment of building energy performance improving strategy were selected as the evaluation program for survey. On such basis, after comparison and analysis between $LCCO_2$ calculating methods and system structures of the two programs, elements required for system establishment that can evaluate life-cycle environmental loads of building in planning stage were proposed.

  • Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica and buckling load of tapered columns with shear deformation, subjected to a compressive end load. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-sections are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The differential equations governing the elastica of buckled column are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the rotation at left end and the buckling load, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing the elastica and the buckling loads of the columns are found to be efficient and reliable.

  • Since the elastic buckling problem of the plate has been studied both experimentally and theoretically, the buckling loads with various boundary conditions and loads can be easily determined. Currently, flange and web design specifications are based on the buckling stress and the post-buckling strength and include a safety-factor. Therefore, this study extended suchresearch to the linear buckling theory with ideal conditions and to the ultimate state with post-buckling. The current specifications are based on elastic buckling stress; and therefore, further research on the ultimate behavior of the plate is required. The ultimate strength design concept, which allows finite deflection, is used in this studyto maximize the post-buckling strength in a steel box. An empirical equation, which provides the ultimate strength of the steel box due to the change in the slenderness and optimum rigidity, are suggested based on the experiment results. Moreover, the appropriateness of the current design specifications was analyzed and discussed.

  • A turn buckle inserted between tension members that sustain the structural loads in a suspension structure system is a device that is capable of adjusting the tensile force. The tension member is an important element of a tension structure, but no simple and economical method of measuring a tensile force applied to members has been proposed yet. Thus, a turn buckle for measuring the tensile force in a tension member was developed in this study. The turn buckles of the measurement limit loads of 100kN, 200kN, and 300kN were tested through a theoretical analysis and a finite element analysis. There was no significant difference in the results of the theoretical analysis, FEA, and the test. In addition, the ultimate strength of the turn buckle using FEA showed that a new turn buckle is sufficiently safe to use even when there is a five-times overload in the measurement limit load.

  • The results of the analysis of the structural behavior of diagrid nodes that were subjected to cyclic loads such as wind and earthquakes was not fully understood due to difficulties in considering the welding type. In this study, diagrid nodes were tested to determine their behavior when they are subjected to seismic or wind loads. Five specimens were designed and fabricated. The corresponding test parameters were the welding type for each point and the length of the overlap of the side stiffener and the brace web. Tensile force was applied to one diagrid brace member, and compression force was applied to the other diagrid brace member. Cyclic loading was applied until the failure. The test showed that failures are due to axial stress from axial force and the additional bending moment of the two combined axial forces that have different directions. Tensile failure was observed from the tensile force, and local buckling was observed from the compressive force at the flange of the brace member. In addition, the welding type and the length overlap affected the initial stiffness, the yielding stress, and the energy absorption of the diagrid node.

  • Recently, as a means of resolving the issue of legal liability in the event of an accident or a disaster, a wide variety of simulation techniques, such as structural and structure-fluid interaction analysis, have been used in the field of forensic engineering. The plate girder bridge discussed in this paper was being constructed between a pier and an abutment to expand an existing bridge, but an accident whereby the bridge overturned occurred at the end of the concrete laying process for a protective wall. This accident was caused by additional loads not being considered at the time of the design as well as the actual construction being different from the design. The additional loads ultimately generated a negative support force. In this study, we determined the cause of the accident by comparing the structural stability of the original design with that of the additional, non-conforming construction using MIDAS structural analysis.

  • As buildings become more high-rise and lightweight in recent years, steel has been utilized more frequently. Based on the American AISC standard, all axial loads could be carried through a bearing load in a column splice, but according to Korean codes, the bearing load has constrained the stress that could be carried by only 25% of all axial loads. Thus, new column splice methods that use metal touch have been examined. In this study, the stress path mechanism, as an intermediation parameter in the gap's magnitude, must be determined. Similarly, the behavioral aspect of the metal touch connection must be sought after comparing and analyzing the results of the test.
