  • To avoid debonding failure, a novel type of hybrid anchorage (HA) is proposed in this study that uses a slotted plate to lock the ends of the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet in addition to the usual bonding over the substrate of the strengthened member. An experimental investigation was performed on three groups of RC beams, which differed from one another in either concrete strength or steel reinforcement ratio. The test results indicate that the end self-locking of the CFRP sheet can improve the failure ductility, ultimate capacity of the beams and its utilization ratio. Although intermediate debonding occurred in all the strengthened beams, it was not a fatal mode of failure for the three specimens with end anchorage. Among them, FRP rupture occurred in the beam with higher concrete strength and lower steel reinforcement ratio, whereas the other two failed by concrete crushing. The beam strengthened by HA obtained a relatively high percentage of increase in ultimate capacity when the rebar ratio or concrete strength decreased. The expressions in the literature were inspected to calculate the critical loads at intermediate debonding, FRP rupturing and concrete crushing after debonding for the strengthened beam. Then, the necessity of further research is addressed.

  • This study aimed to analyze the fatigue of forklifts in industrial settings by assessing their stress levels during operation. Strain gauges were affixed to the dynamic components of the forklifts to gather real-time data and enhance the reliability of the analysis. Although monitoring structural loads in harsh testing environments can be challenging, the affixed strain gauges on the dynamic components can provide more precise results and improve the interpretation of data. By creating testing modes that simulate forklift usage environments and performing experiments with selected cargo and driving modes, a comparison of the damage severity of forklift parts under different driving conditions was done. These results can be utilized to forecast the lifespan of forklift parts under extreme driving conditions and assist in the design and optimization of new parts in the future.

  • Attention has increasingly focused on the pollutant load discharged from rural area since the enforcement of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) in korea. As one of the methods to control the inflow of pollutant load during wet weather events, local governments are attempting to apply non-point source control facility. To design those facilities appropriately, it is essential to understand the runoff characteristics of pollutants such as TSS, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, TP and TN. In the paper, the quantitative analyses for pollutant runoff characteristics were examined in a small rural watershed with the area of about 53 hectares. For a dry weather day and wet weather events, variation patterns of dry weather flow and runoff characteristics of wet weather flows were monitored and investigated. The runoff model using XP-SWMM reflecting the landuse types of the watershed in detail was simulated to perform the sensitivity analyses for several factors influencing on their hydrograph and pollutographs. As a result, for the case of medium and small rainfall events (i. e. total rainfall of 35.8 and 17.5 mm), the impervious area including green house, roof and road which covers relatively low portion of total area (i. e. 16%) caused substantial first flush and the majority of total runoff load. Therefore, it has been concluded that the runoff characteristics of each pollutant and distribution of impervious area should be considered for the establishment of the control strategy of non-point pollutant runoff at a rural area.

  • study deals with the reliability assesment for the 5-year phases of a suspension bridge construction in Korea. The main objectives of this study are; (1) the evaluation of the reliability of a suspension bridge by considering an ultimate limit state for the fracture of main cable wires, (2) the determination of the critical phases among 28 construction stages for the deck erection, and (3) the evaluation of the reliability of the limit state for the erection control during construction stages. The research and the design of the suspension bridge have been focused on the state of construction mainly based on empirical data. Based on the recent survey of the distribution of accidents in Korean railways, over 80% of the accidents related to the uncertainties in human error, planning, design, materials and loads during construction have ben reported before the completion of construction. While many researches have evaluated the safety of bridges, the uncertainties in the construction phases have not been well treated in a guidelines or a specifications. An improved adaptive response surface method is used for the risk assessment in the construction phases of the target suspension bridge.

  • In the structural analysis of a launch vehicle, the construction of loading functions and the determination of responses to them are very important. Among many kinds of loads, acoustic load generated by exhaust is a random load that can be described in a statistical manner. In this study, loading functions corresponding to the acoustic loads are constructed and applied to the structural analysis of launch vehicle. Acoustic loading functions are constructed using source allocation method. Structural analyses are carried out by using finite element modelling and frequency response function of finite element model. The stresses resulting from acoustic loads and acceleration power spectral density functions at interfaces of each section are calculated. These analyses are essential for the development of environmental test specifications and associated dynamic design requirements which are necessary to ensure overall vehicle reliability.

  • In this study, we have assessed the fire risk of Buddhist temples located in Youngdong area by means of fire loads of components. First, we categorized the components into Buddhist temples (Dae-Ung-Jeon, Pal-Sang-Jeon), Sam-Seong-Gak (Chil-Seong-Gak, San-Sin-Gak), a Buddhist temple dormitory (Sim-Geom-Dang, Seol-Seon-Dang), Lu, Il-Ju-Mun and then carried out a field survey. Then, we examined the area of each room, types as well as quantity and dimension of combustibles. The fire loads calculated in this way were 446.96 $kg/m^2$ for Buddhist temples, 331.71 $kg/m^2$ for Sam-Seong-Gak, 164.14 $kg/m^2$ for the Buddhist temple dormitory, 463.91 $kg/m^2$ for Lu and 1042.14 $kg/m^2$ for Il-Ju-Mun, thus showing Il-Ju-Mun with the biggest fire load. We speculate that this is because construction materials were similar in size and quantity to others albeit the area of Il-Ju-Mun is smallest.

  • Strength design wind loads for the wind resistance design of structures shall be evaluated by the product of wind loads calculated based on the basic wind speed with 100 years return period and the wind load factor 1.3 specified in the provisions of load combinations in Korean Building Code (KBC) 2016. It may be sure that the wind load factor 1.3 in KBC(2016) had not been determined by probabilistic method or empirical method using meteorological wind speed data in Korea. In this paper, wind load factors were evaluated by probabilistic method and empirical method. The annual maximum 10 minutes mean wind speed data at 69 meteorological stations during past 40 years from 1973 to 2012 were selected for this evaluation. From the comparison of the results of those two method, it can be found that the mean values of wind load factors calculated both probability based method and empirical based method were similar at all meteorological stations. When target level of reliability index is set up 2.5, the mean value of wind load factors for all regions should be presented about 1.35. When target level of reliability index is set up 3.0, wind load factor should be presented about 1.46. By using the relationship between importance factor(conversion factor for return period) and wind load factor, the return periods for strength design were estimated and expected wind speeds of all regions accounting for strength design were proposed. It can be found that return period to estimate wind loads for strength design should be 500 years and 800 years in according to target level of reliability index 2.5 and 3.0, respectively. The 500 years basic wind speed map for strength design was suggested and it can be used with a wind load factor 1.0.

  • This paper deals with development and dissipation of excess pore pressure induced by the cyclic load. Cyclic triaxial tests on reconstituted samples of weathered residual soils, which were widely used as construction materials in Korea, were performed. Test results showed that excess pore pressures developed under undrained condition increased with the increase of cyclic loads and confining pressures. And a new concept based on modified excess pore pressure ratio (MEPPR) was proposed for simply estimating excess pore pressures in terms of the number of cyclic load, irrespective of cyclic loads and confining pressures. Also, it was proposed that excess pore pressure ratio (EPPR) could be effectively utilized to estimate volumetric strains during dissipation which decreased as confining pressures increased. Consequently, concept and method to effectively estimate settlements under non-liquefied condition, induced by dynamic loads such as earthquake loads were evaluated based on laboratory test results for reconstituted weathered residual soils.

  • Experimental study was performed to evaluate the long-term behavior of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) strips under sustained loads including prestressing force in strengthening RC members with post-tensioned CFRP strips. Two types of CFRP strip such as unidirectional CFRP strip and hybrid CFRP strip which is composed of carbon fiber and steel plate were considered. Also two types of loading scheme were included in this study. Direct sustained loading test had been carried out to estimate the creep deformation and relaxation of CFRP strips including slip deformation at both mechanical anchorages for over 700 days. Also, flexural sustained loading test had been conducted to estimate the initial prestress losses on clamping the CFRP strips at jacking anchorages for over 90 days. From the sustained loading tests, it was observed that stress losses of unidirectional CFRP strips due to the creep deformation and relaxation of material itself and slip deformation at mechanical anchorage were ignorable. On the other hand, significant stress losses caused by the yielding of steel embedded in CFRP strips were found in case of hybrid CFRP strips due to the initial jacking force over steel yielding stress. Also, initial prestress losses during setting of CFRP strips on mechanical anchorage were about 10% of intial jacking force, which must be considered in the design.

  • The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of soil-structure interaction and time dependent material properties on behavior of concrete box-girder highway bridges. Two different finite element analyses, one stage and construction stage, have been carried out on Komurhan Bridge between Elazi$\breve{g}$ and Malatya province of Turkey, over Fırat River. The one stage analysis assume that structure was built in a second and material properties of structure not change under different loads and site conditions during time. However, construction stage analysis considers that construction time and time dependent material properties. The main and side spans of bridge are 135 m and 76 m, respectively. The bridge had been constructed in 3 years between 1983 and 1986 by balanced cantilever construction method. The parameters of soil-structure interaction (SSI), time dependent material properties and construction method are taken into consideration in the construction stage analysis while SSI is single parameter taking into consideration in the one stage analysis. The 3D finite element model of bridge is created the commercial program of SAP2000. Time dependent material properties are elasticity modulus, creep and shrinkage for concrete and relaxation for steel. Soft, medium, and firm soils are selected for evaluating SSI in both analyses. The results of two different finite element analyses are compared with each other. It is seen that both construction stage and SSI have a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.
