In this study, the Charpy impact test along with metallurgical observation was conducted to evaluate low temperature impact toughness of structural steel welds with different welding processes to find out the optimal welding process to guarantee the required impact toughness at low temperatures. The welding processes employed are shield metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux cored arc welding(FCAW), which are commonly used welding methods in construction. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. To investigate the impact toughness at low temperatures of the steel welds, specimens were extracted from the weld metal and the heat affected zone. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The low temperature impact performance was evaluated based on the correlation between the absorbed energy and the microstructure. Analysis of the results showed that the optimal welding process to ensure the higher low temperature impact toughness of the HAZ and the weld metal is SMAW process using the welding consumable for steels targeted to low temperature use.
Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.

Granitoid rocks are generally high-quality rock from a geotechnical perspective, because they rarely contain systematic joints or fragmented fault zones. Although the rock type at the Sanhak site is granite, a collapsed slope has a deep soil layer and shows no residual structures such as discontinuities or faults; surface avalanches from this slope can be observed in several places. To study the stability of this slope, we investigated rainfall duration, variation in pore-water pressure, and the factor of safety considering three cases (current cross-section, initial planning cross-section, revised planning cross-section). With increasing duration of rainfall, the groundwater level rises, up to 20 m in height from ground surface. In the initial planning cross-section, safety was secure for rainfall of 2 days duration, but inadequate for rainfall of 4 days duration. In the revised planning cross-section, however, safety factors were secure for rainfall of 4 days duration. Therefore, to ensure permanent stability at the Sanhak site, a slope degree of 1:1.8 should be maintained during cutting.

The temperature variation of concrete pavement at early-age significantly affects the initiation and propagation of its early-age cracks. This implies that the measurement and analysis of early age temperature trend are necessary to examine the causes of early age cracks in the concrete pavement. In this study, it is investigated how the early age temperature trend in concrete pavement affects the random crack initiation and behaviors of saw-cut joints using the actual construction site which is located at the KHC test road. During 72 hours after placing the concrete pavement, the ambient air temperature and temperatures at the top, middle, and bottom in concrete pavement were measured and the random crack initiation in concrete slabs and early age behaviors in the joints were surveyed. The investigation results indicate that the first random crack was initiated at one of the slabs placed in the early morning which have higher temperature changes during early 72 hours. The movement of slab was influenced by the early-age crack in the joint. It suggested that the different occurrence time of the cracks in the joint had an influence on the behavior of the cracks. Besides, the slab constructed In the morning had higher possibility of crack initiation than that in the afternoon. The rarely occurred cracks had bigger gap than other cracks.
The foundation area for tram contains biotite gneiss, quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, calc-silicate rock, and porphyroblastic gneiss of the pre-Cambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex. These rocks record at least three stages of deformation, as indicated by fold sets of contrasting orientations (D1-D3). Joints are generally steeply dipping and strike NW-SE to WNW-ESE. The Gonjiam Fault, which strikes WNW-ESE, follows a river in the area. The fault possesses a 3-m-wide fracture zone, a 10-m-wide damage zone, and is 15 km long. Two tunnels have been constructed through the biotite gneiss. The geometric relationship between discontinuities (e.g., joints and foliation) and tunneling direction reveals that set 3 of the AA tunnel is unstable but that BB tunnel is relatively safe.
Specific joint devices composed of end-plates and through bolts are under development to assemble steel beams to PC columns efficiently by dry construction method for the PCS structural system, of which major structural components are precast concrete columns and steel beams. Seismic performance of the joint devices had been evaluated by experimental tests in the previous studies and it was showed that all the performance requirements regarding to strength deterioration, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity were satisfied to the criteria of ACI requirements, but the initial stiffness was not. In order to find out possible causes of the insufficient rigidity of the joint devices and provide the proper measures to improve the performance of the joint accordingly, numerical analyses were carried out by using ABAQUS. Parameters, such as thickness of neoprene pad, conditions of surface between PC column and end-plate, magnitude of pretension forces of through bolts, stiffness of end-plate were taken into consideration. As the result, it was found that the rigidity of the PCS system was negatively affected by the magnitude of initial gaps between PC columns and end-plates, and insufficient stiffness of neoprene fillers and end plates. In order to improve the initial stiffness performance of the joints, measures such as increase of the magnitude of pretension forces on through bolts and increase of the stiffness of end-plate by reducing the bolt pitch and providing adequate stiffeners are recommended.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of high strength R/C interior beam-column joints regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar. Five specimens of retrofitted the beam-column joint regions using advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar were constructed and tested for their retrofitring performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the interior beam-column joint regions (IJIR series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity. Specimens of IJIR series, designed by the retrofitting of advanced reinforcing detailings and high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 114.2~123.5% and its energy dissipation capacity by 1.55~1.85 times in comparison with the standard specimen of SIJC with a displacement ductility of 5.
The joints between precast PSC slabs of the intermediate road slab in double deck tunnel are inevitably generated in the road traffic vehicle traveling direction. Therefore, it is important to make the behavior of parts on the joint in one piece. The imtermediate road slab system of double deck tunnel in great depth proposed in this study will be constructed with precast PSC slab in order to minimize the construction period. And the joint connection between the precast slab has been developed in two methods: the 'Transverse tendon reinforcement method' and 'High strength bolts connection method'. Also, the experiments were performed for the full scale model in order to evaluate the performance of the intermediate road deck slab with two type joints systems, the structural stability was verified through the F.E.M analsysis. The results of static loading test and F.E.M analysis investigated a very stable behavior of intermediate road deck slab in double deck tunnel applying the joint methods developed in this study, in the cracks and deflections to satisfy the design standards of Highway Roads Bridges (2011), it was determined that there is no problem even servicebility.
The purpose of this study was to investigate stresses in the various components of fixed partial dentures restoring the posterior teeth of the lower jaw, and to measure quantitatively the effects of certain modifications in structural design on the stresses in the restorations using two-dimensional photoelasticity. Two-dimensional photoelastic methods were used in this study. Several models of fixed partial dentures were constructed. Shoulder less margins and anatomic occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 1. Rounded shoulders and flat occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 2, while Model 3 was a cantilever fixed partial denture. Other similar fixed partial dentures were constructed with V and U notches deliverately included in the region of the fixed joints for comparative reasons. The birefringent materials used in this study were PSM-1 and PSM-5 in standard sheets. PSM-1 was used for constructing the substructure, and PSM-5 was used in making the components of the fixed partial dentures. The two materials were used in the construction of composite photoelastic models. Improved artificial stone was used to represent dental cement in luting the composite photoelastic models. Static loading procedures were used at preplanned sites to represent occlusal loads in the mouth. 35 mm color and B/W film were used to record isochromatics in accordance with photoelastic procedures. Data reduction was performed using the grid method, which helped in, the mathematical integration procedure (Shear difference method) to separate the principal stresses. The results were as follows. 1. Fixed partial dentures do not function in bending as a symmetrical beam. Alternate areas of tension and compression were demonstrated when multiple contact loading was used. 2. The weakest part in posterior fixed partial dentures is the fixed joint. 3. (1) Models I and modified Model I were loaded on the pontic using a 50 pound vertical static load. The shear stress near the posterior fixed joint in Model 1 (U notches) was+129.4 p.s.i., and at the same fixed joint in modified Model 1 (V notches) was+239.4 p.s.i. The concentration of stress in fixed joint was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. (2) Modified Model 2 was loaded using a multiple contact loader at a total load of 125 pounds. The difference between the principal stresses (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$), shear stress, at the V notches was+600 p.s.i., and at the U notches was+3l7 p.s.i. The shear stress was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. V-grooves at the fixed joints should be avoided, and should be replaced by regular shaped U-grooves. 4. Cantilever fixed partial dentures had much higher stresses at the fixed joint than fixed partial dentures that were attached at both ends.
Grouting technology is one of the ground improvement methods used in water controlling and reinforcement of rock mass in underground structure construction. It is necessarily required to find out the characteristics of grout flow through discontinuities in a rock mass for an adequate grout design and performance assessment. Laminar flow is not always applicable in simulating a grout flow in a rock mass, since the rock joints usually have apertures at a micro-scale and the flow through these joints is affected by the joint roughness and the velocity profile of the flow changes partially near the roughness. Thus, the influence of joint roughness and aperture on the grout flow in rough rock joint was numerically investigated in this study. The commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT, was applied for this purpose. The computed results by embedded Herschel-Bulkley model and VOF (volume of fluid) model, which are applicable to simulate grout flow in a narrow rock joint that is filled with air and water, were well compared with that of analytical results and previously published laboratory test for the verification. The injection pressure required to keep constant injection rate of grout was calculated in a variety of Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) and aperture conditions, and the effect of joint roughness and aperture on grout flow were quantified.
