It is necessary to predict the deformation and stresses on soils to establish the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of geomaterials at various strain levels. Especially, a need exists to establish the pre-failure nonlinear characteristic of cemented granular geomaterials used in road constructions. In this paper, therefore, conventional granular soils were mixed with various cementing materials, such as cement and fly ash from coal combustion by-products. Then, the normalized nonlinear behavior of cemented geomaterials was assessed using unconfined compression test. In addition, various constitutive models of soils were evaluated for estimating pre-failure non-linear behavior of cemented geomaterials from the test results.
Reasonable estimates of tunnel lining dislocations in the operation stage, especially under longitudinal differential settlement, are important for the design of waterproof gaskets. In this paper, a modified shell-joint model is proposed to calculate shield tunnel dislocations under longitudinal differential settlement, with the ability to consider the nonlinear shear stiffness of the joint. In the case of shell elements in the model, an elastoplastic damage constitutive model was adopted to describe the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of concrete. After verifying its applicability and correctness against a full-scale tunnel test and a joint shear test, the proposed model was used to analyze the dislocation behaviors of a shield tunnel in Shanghai Metro Line 2 under longitudinal differential settlement. Based on the results, when the tunnel structure is solely subjected to water-earth load, circumferential and longitudinal joint dislocations are all less than 0.1 mm. When the tunnel suffers longitudinal differential settlement and the curvature radius of the differential settlement is less than 300 m, although maximum longitudinal joint dislocation is still less than 0.1 mm, the maximum circumferential joint dislocation is approximately 10.3 mm, which leads to leakage and damage of the tunnel structure. However, with concavo-convex tenons applied to circumferential joints, the maximum dislocation value reduces to 4.5 mm.
The bonding efficacy of steel I-section embedded in metakaolin-fly ash-based geopolymer concrete (MK-FA-GC) was investigated in this study. Push-out tests were conducted on nine column specimens to evaluate the influence of compressive strength of concrete, embedded length of steel I-section, thickness of concrete cover, and stirrup ratio on the bond performance. Failure patterns, load-slip relationships, bond strength, and distribution of bond stress among the specimens were analyzed. The characteristic bond strength of geopolymer concrete (GC) increased with higher compressive strength, longer embedded steel section length, thicker concrete cover, and larger stirrup ratio. Empirical formulas for bond strength at the loading end were derived based on experimental data and a bond-slip constructive model for steel-reinforced MK-FA-GC was proposed. The calculated bond-slip curves showed good agreement with experimental results. Furthermore, numerical simulations using ABAQUS software were performed on column specimens by incorporating the suggested bond-slip relationship into connector elements to simulate the interface behavior between MK-FA-GC and the steel section. The simulation results showed a good correlation with the experimental findings.
If the governing differential equation arising from engineering problems is treated as an analytic, continuous and derivable function, it can be expanded by one point as a series of finite numbers. For the function to be zero for each value of its domain, the coefficients of each term of the same power must be zero. This results in a recursive relationship which, after applying the natural conditions or the boundary conditions, makes it possible to obtain the values of the derivatives of the function with acceptable accuracy. The elastoplastic analysis of an inhomogeneous thick sphere of metallic materials with linear variation of the modulus of elasticity, yield stress and Poisson's ratio as a function of radius subjected to internal pressure is presented. The Beltrami-Michell equation is established by combining equilibrium, compatibility and constitutive equations. Assuming axisymmetric conditions, the spherical coordinate parameters can be used as principal stress axes. Since there is no analytical solution, the natural boundary conditions are applied and the governing equations are solved using a proposed new method. The maximum effective stress of the von Mises yield criterion occurs at the inner surface; therefore, the negative sign of the linear yield stress gradation parameter should be considered to calculate the optimal yield pressure. The numerical examples are performed and the plots of the numerical results are presented. The validation of the numerical results is observed by modeling the elastoplastic heterogeneous thick sphere as a pressurized multilayer composite reservoir in Abaqus software. The subroutine USDFLD was additionally written to model the continuous gradation of the material.

Recently, nine $1397{\times}1397{\times}178mm$ RC panels were tested under in-plane pure-shear monotonic loading condition using the Panel Element Tester by Hsu (1997, ACI). By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, Modern Truss Model (MCFT, RA-STM) are capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of RC membrane panel through the complicated trial-and-error method with double loop. In this paper, an efficient algorithm with one loop is proposed for the refined Mohr compatibility Method based on the strut-tie failure criteria. This algorithm can be speedy calculated to analyze the shear history of RC membrane element using the results of Hsu test. The results indicate that the response of shear deformation energy at Big Bang of shear strain significantly influenced by the principal compressive stress-strain (crushing failure).

The analysis of linear static and free vibration problems of isotropic and laminated composite plates and shells is performed by the improved 9-node shell element with the new strain displacement relationship. In that relationship, the effect of new additional terms between the bending strain and displacement has been investigated in the warping problem. Natural co ordinate based strains, stresses and constitutive equations are used. The assumed natural strain method is used to alleviate both membrane and shear locking behavior from the element. The Lanczos method is employed in the calculation of the eigenvalues of laminated composite structures and the Gauss integration rule is adopted to evaluate the mass matrix. The numerical examples are compared with the analytical solutions to validate the current formulation and the results presented could be useful for the understanding of the behaviour of laminates under free vibration conditions.

The three truss models(equilibrium truss model, Mohr compatibility truss model, and the soften truss model) based on a rotating angle is called the rotating-angle model. The three rotating-angle models have a common weakness: they are incapable of predicting the so-called "contribution of concrete". To take into account this "contribution of concrete", the modern truss model(MCFT, STM) treats a cracked reinforced concrete element as a continuous material. By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, MTM is capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete structures composed of membrane element. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the solution of proposed model incorporated with failure criteria. This algorithm is used to analyze the behavior of reinforced membrane element using the results of Hsu test.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder characterized by extracellular amyloid plaques composed of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). Studies have indicated that Ca2+ dysregulation is involved in AD pathology. It is reported that decreased capacitative Ca2+ entry (CCE), a refilling mechanism of intracellular Ca2+, resulting in increased Aβ production. In contrast, constitutive activation of CCE could decrease Aβ production. Panax ginseng Meyer is known to enhance memory and cognitive functions in healthy human subjects. We have previously reported that some ginsenosides decrease Aβ levels in cultured primary neurons and AD mouse model brains. However, mechanisms involved in the Aβ-lowering effect of ginsenosides remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the relationship between CCE and Aβ production by examining the effects of various ginsenosides on CCE levels. Aβ-lowering ginsenosides such as Rk1, Rg5, and Rg3 potentiated CCE. In contrast, ginsenosides without Aβ-lowering effects (Re and Rb2) failed to potentiate CCE. The potentiating effect of ginsenosides on CCE was inhibited by the presence of 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2APB), an inhibitor of CCE. 2APB alone increased Aβ42 production. Furthermore, the presence of 2APB prevented the effects of ginsenosides on Aβ42 production. Our results indicate that ginsenosides decrease Aβ production via potentiating CCE levels, confirming a close relationship between CCE levels and Aβ production. Since CCE levels are closely related to Aβ production, modulating CCE could be a novel target for AD therapeutics.
Among the methods for enhancement of load-carrying capacity on flexural concrete member, recently, a concept is being investigated which replaces the steel in a conventional reinforced concrete member with a fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) shell. This study focuses on modeling of the structural behavior of concrete surrounded with FRP shells in flexural bending members. A numerical model of fiber cross-sectional analysis is proposed to predict the stress and deformation state of the FRP shell and concrete. The stress-strain relationship of concrete confined by a FRP shell is formulated to be based on the constitutive law of concrete in multi-axial compressive stress state, in assuming that the compression response is dependent on the radial expansion of the concrete. To describe the FRP shell behavior, equivalent orthotropic properties of in-plane behavior from classical lamination theory are used. The present model is validated to compare with the experiments of 4-point bending tests of FRP shell concrete beam, and has well predicted the moment-curvature relationships of the members, axial and hoop strains in the section, and the enhancement of confinement effect in concrete surrounded by FRP shell.
In order to predict the nonlinear behaviour of the soil, the elasto-plastic hyperbolic model was selected, which was considered to be relatively simple and highly predictable. The soil parameter determination and the behavior analysis program were developed by formalizing the functions related to the constitutive model. Each soil parameter was determined from the results of the drained triaxial compression tests of Baekma river sand with the change of relative density. The stress-strain behavior was predicted using the soil parameters determined under each condition. As a result, the deviator stress for the axial strain is verified to have a good match between the measured value and predicted value at each relative density. In the relationship between the volumetric stain and the axial strain, when the relative density is loose, the measured value and predicted value tend to match, and when relative density is dense, the predicted value of the volumetric strain appears somewhat smaller than the measured value due to the limitation of the constitutive model.
