Background: The Sasang constitutional analysis tool (SCAT) is an integrated Sasang constitutional analysis system developed by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of a questionnaire for measuring personality and pathophysiological symptoms that is one of the components of the SCAT. Methods: In this study, data were collected from university students in their twenties. Tests were administered twice, with an interval of 4 weeks between tests. Test-retest data from 176 students were collected and used for analysis. Internal consistency reliability was analyzed by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability was analyzed by using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.788 for personality, 0.511 for eating habits, 0.718 for digestion, 0.667 for heat- or cold-wise penchant, and 0.612 for water ingestion. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients, which were used to assess correlations between test and retest results, ranged from 0.444 to 0.828. Conclusion: The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the SCAT questionnaire were found to be satisfactory.
1. Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze for the patent application tendency in SCM(Sasang Constitutional Medicine). Recently, in SCM, many researches are made public through papers. However, in the patent area, the research results are less than the papers. 2. Methods : We collected patents about SCM using wintelips program. We analyzed patents according to the year, author, topic, and etc. 3. Results : We collected 151 patents using search system with wintelips program. After detailed analysis on SCM patent, we got to know that SCM was a growing field. In the collected patents, the patents on diagnosis technology were the majority and system of providing information were the second largest. 4. Conclusions : We think that the SCM field is growing at a fast pace with high activity, and this research should be updated annually.
By the increasing concern about Sasang Constitution Medicine, its practical use is considered very important in disease prevention and medical treatment. However, the method of constitution classification is depending on the doctor's clinical trials because of the lack of the objective test criteria. This study is trying to improve the objectiveness of diagnosis using a new statistical method, decision tree. Decision tree method-a classification technique in the statistical analysis- was used to analyze the result of QSCCII instead of using discriminant analysis. As a result, 16 among 121 QSCCII questions was selected as important questions and 21 terminal nodes was built to classify the constitution. Using only 16 questions shown in the result of decision tree, we can diagnose and interpret the constitution easily and effectively.
1. Objectives The body shape is an important standard for the classification of Sasang Constitutions. Using physical measurements and statistical analysis we can understand it's characteristic objectively. 2. Methods In this study, we have measured body circumferences and widths of 562 patients who were treated with Sasang Constitutional medicine. Their anthropometric data were transformed into the ratio based on Sasang Constitutional medicine. 3. Results (1) Taeyangin female's ratio of iliac width to chest width was most large, but Taeyangin male's was most small. (2) Soyangin's ratios of axillary width to waist width and chest width to iliac width were large. that is, their uppor body was large and lower body was small. (3) Taeumin's ratios of head and neck circumference to body circumference were small. the ratio of waist width to axillary width was most large. (4) Soeumin's ratio of head circumference to waist circumference was most large. and their uppor and lower body was larger than middle body. (5) Irrespective of Sasang Constitutions, male's ratios of axillary width to waist width and chest width to iliac width were larger than female's. 4. Conclusions From the above results, when we classify Sasang Constitutions using physical measurements we must consider gender differences and characteristics of Sasang Constitutional body shape.
Objectives : This study proposes developing Sasang Medical Diagnosis Program using Facial form for increase in Sasang Constitution Diagnosis objectivity and putting the Diagnosis Program into practical use. The author presents a review of extant research on Sasang constitution diagnosis utilizing facial feature analysis and suggests an agenda for further research. Methods : For this thesis, a collection of dissertations on the subject of 'Usage of facial form for constitution diagnosis' published until September of 2012 such as RISS4U, OASIS, KISTI, Korean TK were reviewed. The final 33 dissertations were classified into two categories, basic or clinical research and then analyzed. Results : 9 out of 33 dissertations were of basic research and 24 were of clinical research. 1) As result of review of references, a uniform tendency was found in facial form according to Sasang Constitution. 2) In the grade of practical use, facial element is repeatedly used and the facial element of important use has constitutional differences. 3) Standard faces per Sasang Constitution were derived as result of 2-dimensional research. 4) 3-dimensional research focused on improvement of accuracy and reliability of 3D-AFRA, and there has been an attempt to develop a prototype for identification. Conclusions : For practical use of facial feature in Sasang Constitution Diagnosis, 1) Standardization of diagnosis through establishing Sasang Medical Diagnosis clinical protocol must be preceded. After the standardization, practical purpose and direction of facial form in general may be decided. 2) Information on high quality facial form of constitutional and conditional patients must be collected to form extensive database. 3) Subdivided symptomatology, as well as Sasang Constitution must be considered for diagnosis in order for diagnosis technique to acquire clinical practicality.
In Sasang constitutional medicine, the classification of Sasang constitutional types (Tae-Yang, Tae-Eum, So-Yang, and So-Eum) is important for the treatment. There are some problems with the methods used for classifying Sasang constitutional types; old methods such as pulse-palpation are not considered objective and recent methods such as immunohematology are considered expensive, painful and time-consuming. To overcome these problems, a body measurement and finger prints analysis were performed. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the palm prints and the palm creases could be helpful in classifying Sasang constitutional types. Thus, we looked for characteristics of the palm prints and the palm creases according to Sasang constitutional types. Before analyzing the palm prints and palm creases, 760 Korean (465 males, 295 females) were surveyed using two kinds of questionnaires for classifying Sasang constitutional types. As there were no Tae-Yang individuals, we were only able to identify the characteristics of the palm prints and the palm creases for Tae-Eum (288 persons), So-Yang (193 persons), and So-Eum (279 persons) individuals. In this study, the terminal points of D, closed crease, and open crease seemed to be helpful in classifying Tae-Eum and So-Eum individuals. Terminal point 11 and closed crease were frequent in Tae-Eum individuals; whereas, terminal point 7 and open crease were frequent in So-Eum individuals. Therefore, the palm prints and the palm creases seem to contribute to the classification of Sasang constitutional types.
Objective : This research was conducted to evaluate the method of sasangin classification by voice analysis, The 2 pilot tests were thus designed to solve the following problems: 'What are the conditions at classification for sasangin by the voice analysis?' and 'What are the important variances of /a/ parameter?'. Methods: 122 volunteers Were examined to make a diagnosis of sasangin by QSCC II and they were disease-free and healthy, First, they said /a/ three times for 2 seconds in their usual voice, Second, they said /a/ for 2 seconds by the different ways of high tone, mid tone, and low tone. The sounds were collected by a recording program (cooledit 2000) through a Sony microphone (ecm-26l). We analyzed the voices by maltlab, the simulation tool. Results: There were no differences and were correlations when one said /a/ three times for 2 seconds in the usual voice. There were some things to correlate when one said /a/ three times for 2 seconds by the different ways of high speech, usual speech, and low speech. Others were nothing to correlate. We evaluated the value of sasangin classification method by only /a/ voice analysis. The hit ratio was average $66.3\%\;:\;soyangin\;67.9\%,\;taeumin\;68.0\%,\;soeumin\;63.9\%$. Conclusion: We must set up the conditions to use the method of sasangin classification by voice analysis. The value of sasangin classification method by only fa! voice analysis was a hit ratio of $66.3\%$.
Objectives The aim of this study was to make an analysis of clinical characteristics and status of Sasang constitutional medicine of patients with Parkinson's Disease who visited a Korean medicine hospital. Methods We studied 129 patients with Parkinson's Disease who visited a Korean medicine hospital from September 1, 2012 to June 30, 2018. We retrospectively collected medical history and characteristics of subjects using data of EMR (electronic medical record). Results The proportion of female was higher than male. The average age was 60s. The patients visited a hospital more than one year after the occurrence of symptoms. And they were mostly under western medicine treatment. Among the 129 patients, 56 persons(43.4%) were Taeeumin, 45 persons(34.9%) Soyangin and 28 persons Soeumin(21.7%). In the distribution of prescription according Sasang Constitutional Medicine symptomatology, there was no significant difference in the proportion of exterior cold disease(48.9%) and interior heat disease(51.1%) in Soyangin. Meanwhile the proportion of heat disease's prescription was higher than cold disease in Taeeumin(73.2%) and Soeumin(84.1%). The majority of disease were Dry-febrile symptom(73.2%) of heat disease in Taeeumin, Yang depletion-syndrome(64.3%) of heat disease in Soeumin, and Gyolhyung-symptom(33.3%) of exterior cold disease and Wasting thirst-syndrome(22.2%) of interior heat disease in Soyangin, Conclusions By Developing of guideline for treatment of Parkinson's Disease through analyzing on clinical characteristics and distribution of Sasang Constitutional Medicine symptomatology could contribute to the improvement of the cure rate and accuracy of constitution pattern.
Objectives: This paper was for studying the constitutional differences between questionnaire and clinical diagnosis, and to be helpful to make a diagnosis Sasang constitution. Using the result of this study, it will be helpful to diagnose a Sasang constitution. Methods: There were 331 patients(135 men and 196 women) who answered questionnaire and were diagnosed by the Sasang constitution specialist at constitutional clinic of Dongguk Bundang Oriental Hospital. Using the response of questionnaire and several statistical techniques, we tried to find the characteristics of questionnaire response among each constitution and consistency between questionnaire and clinical diagnosis. Results: As a result of the analysis of the consistency between clinical diagnosis and questionnaire, the consistency was low degree(kappa value = 0.320) and Taeumin and Soeumin had more consistency than Soyangin.
