A Fuel Spiking Test for the Surge Margin Measurement in Gas Turbine Engines

  • A fuel spiking test was performed to measure the surge margin of the compressor in a gas turbine engine. During the test, fuel spiking signal was superimposed on the engine controller demand and the mixed signals were used to control a fuel line servo-valve. For the superimposition, a subsystem composed of a fuel controller and a function generator was used. During the fuel spiking test, the original scheduled fuel signals and the modified signals were compared to guarantee the consistency excluding the spiking signals. The spiking signals were carefully selected to maintain the engine speed constant. The fuel spiking effects were checked by three dynamic pressure sensors. Sensors were placed before the servo-valve, after the servo-valve, and after the compressor location, respectively. The modulations of the spiking signal duration and fuel flow rate were examined to make the- operating point approach the surge region. The real engine test was performed at the Altitude Engine Test Facility (AETF) in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). In the real engine test, fuel spiking signals with 25~50 ㎳ of spiking signal time and 17~46 % of base fuel flow rate condition were used. The dithering signal was 5~6 ㎃ at 490 Hz. The test results showed good agreement between the fuel spiking signals and the fuel line pressure signals. Also, the compressor discharge pressure signals showed fuel spiking effects and the changes of the operating point on the compressor characteristic map could be traced.

Design of Self-Starting Hybrid Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Connected Directly to Line

  • In view of the current state of the reserves of electric energy generated resources and the share of electric motors in electricity consumption, many researches and studies related to efficiency in electric motors are being made. The presented work is related to the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (AF-PMSM), which has recently undergone significant work based on the development of magnet and motor technology. In this study, a novel AF-PMSM was designed analytically through Finite Element Method (FEM) which can be started by connecting to a line such as an asynchronous motor in a transient state and can operate with high efficiency and power factor after synchronization in steady state without the need for an expensive motor drive. According to the obtained FEM results, a design with an efficiency class of IE4 of 5.5 kW shaft power, a 4 poles motor was obtained. As a result, economic calculations indicate that the extra cost of the designed Line start AF-PMSM with respect to the asynchronous motor is rapidly compensated by energy saving due to a more efficient operation, especially constant speed operations. As a result of the analysis obtained, the targeted values are reached. For induction motors and radial flux permanent magnet synchronous motors, a good alternative motor that can operate with high efficiency and power factor has been obtained.

A Study about the interactions of vessels running parallely proximity to one another and safe conducting of them (병항(竝航) 2선박간의 상호작용과 안전항과(安全航過)에 관한 연구)

  • When a vessel passes near a channel boundary, the boundary creates forces and moments acting on the vessel. With the same reason passing of two vessels closely gives same effects to each other. The principal. difference between the above two cases is that the channel boundary is long and constant shape compared to those of vessels. The interaction forces and moments between two vessels could be assumed to be functions of the longitudinal distance $x_0$, transverse distance $y_0$ and speeds of the two vessels. Passage of one vessel close to another is important operationally from the viewpoint of replenishment at sea, avoidance of collisions and passage of two vessels in restricted channels. The authors studied the interactions between two vessels running closely and calculated safe conducting distances according to separated distances and speeds of the two vessels.

VIRTUAL PREDICTION OF A RADIAL-PLY TIRE'S IN-PLANE FREE VIBRATION MODES TRANSMISSIBILITY

  • A full nonlinear finite element P185/70Rl4 passenger car radial-ply tire model was developed and run on a 1.7-meter-diameter spinning test drum/cleat model at a constant speed of 50 km/h in order to investigate the tire transient response characteristics, i.e. the tire in-plane free vibration modes transmissibility. The virtual tire/drum finite element model was constructed and tested using the nonlinear finite element analysis software, PAM-SHOCK, a nonlinear finite element analysis code. The tire model was constructed in extreme detail with three-dimensional solid, layered membrane, and beam finite elements, incorporating over 18,000 nodes and 24 different types of materials. The reaction forces of the tire axle in vertical (Z axis) and longitudinal (X axis) directions were recorded when the tire rolled over a cleat on the drum, and then the FFT algorithm was applied to examine the transient response information in the frequency domain. The result showed that this PI 85/70Rl4 tire has clear peaks of 84 and 45 Hz transmissibility in the vertical and longitudinal directions. This result was validated against more than 10 previous studies by either theoretical or experimental approaches and showed excellent agreement. The tire's post-impact response was also investigated to verify the numerical convergence and computational stability of this FEA tire model and simulation strategy, the extraordinarily stable scenario was confirmed. The tire in-plane free vibration modes transmissibility was successfully detected. This approach was never before attempted in investigations of tire in-plane free vibration modes transmission phenomena; this work is believed to be the first of its kind.

Minimum-Time Trajectory Control of Ships Using Neural Networks (신경회로망을 이용한 선박의 최단시간 궤적제어)

  • A ship is intended to reach a specified target point in the minimum-time when it travels with a constant speed through a region of strong currents and its heading angle is the control variable. This is called the Zermelo's navigation problem. Its approximate solution for the minimum-time control may be found using the calculus of variation. However, the accuracy of its approximate solution is not high since the solution is based on a table form of inverse relations for some complicated nonlinear equations. To enhance the accuracy, this paper employs the neural network to represent the inverse relation of the complicated nonlinear equations. The accurate minimum-time control is possible with the interpolation property of the neural network. Through the computer simulation study we have found that the proposed method is superior to the conventional ones.

THE EFFECT OF VISCOSITY, SPECIMEN GEOMETRY AND ADHESION ON THE LINEAR POLYMERIZATION SHRINKAGE MEASUREMENT OF LIGHT CURED COMPOSITES (점도, 시편형태 그리고 접착의 유무가 광중합 복합레진의 선형중합수축의 측정에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of study was to investigate the effect of flow, specimen geometry and adhesion on the measurement of linear polymerization shrinkage of light cured composite resins using linear shrinkage measuring device. Four commercially available composites - an anterior posterior hybrid composite Z100, a posterior packable composite P60 and two flowable composites, Filtek flow and Tetric flow-were studied. The linear polymerization shrinkage of composites was determined using 'bonded disc method' and 'non-bond-ed' free shrinkage method at varying C-factor in the range of 1∼8 by changing specimen geometry. These measured linear shrinkage values were compared with free volumetric shrinkage values. The viscosity and flow of composites were determined and compared by measuring the dropping speed of metal rod under constant load. In non-bonded method, the linear shrinkage approximated one third of true volumetric shrink-age by isotropic contraction. However, in bonded disc method, as the bonded surface increased the linear shrinkage increased up to volumetric shrinkage value by anisotropic contraction. The linear shrinkage value increased with increasing C-factor and approximated true volumetric shrinkage and reached plateau at about C-factor 5∼6. The more flow the composite was, reduced linear shrinkage was measured by compensation radial flow.

Recovery of Copper from Waste Water by $H_2$Reduction (동폐수용액으로부터 수소환원법에 의한 동의 회수)

  • The recovery of copper from $\alpha$-Etchent waste and pure copper solution was studied by the $H_2$reduction process. The results of test were as following: 1) The recovery of copper was increased with increasing hydrogen pressure and stirring speed up to 300 psi and 500 rpm, respectively, and was decreased in the higher values. But the recovery of copper from the fresh copper solution and $\alpha$-Etchent solution reached 90% and 60%, respectively. And in all tests the copper recovery from pure copper solution is higher by 30~40% than that from $\alpha$Etchent solution. 2) The recovery of copper was increased up to 30 minute of reaction time, and after then it became constant. The copper particles prepared in the initial 30 min have the needle-like shapes and in the longer reaction time than 30 min the shape was changed into noudle-like form. The average particle size was about $2~3\mu\textrm{m}$.

Surface Morphology and Optical Properties of Aluminosilicate Glass Manufactured by Physical and Chemical Etching Process (물리·화학적 혼합 식각 공정에 의해 제조된 알루미노실리케이트 유리의 표면 형상과 광학 특성)

  • Surface morphology and optical properties such as transmittance and haze effect of glass etched by physical and chemical etching processes were investigated. The physical etching process was carried out by pen type sandblasting process with $15{\sim}20{\mu}m$ dia. of $Al_2O_3$ media; the chemical etching process was conducted using HF-based mixed etchant. Sandblasting was performed in terms of variables such as the distance of 8 cm between the gun nozzle and the glass substrate, the fixed air pressure of 0.5bar, and the constant speed control of the specimen stage. The chemical etching process was conducted with mixed etching solution prepared by combination of BHF (Buffered Hydrofluoric Acid), HCl, and distilled water. The morphology of the glass surface after sandblasting process displayed sharp collision vestiges with nonuniform shapes that could initiate fractures. The haze values of the sandblasted glass were quantitatively acceptable. However, based on visual observation, the desirable Anti-Glare effect was not achieved. On the other hand, irregularly shaped and sharp vestiges transformed into enlarged and smooth micro-spherical craters with the subsequent chemical etching process. The curvature of the spherical crater increased distinctly by 60 minutes and decreased gradually with increasing etching time. Further, the spherical craters with reduced curvature were uniformly distributed over the etched glass surface. The haze value increased sharply up to 55 % and the transmittance decreased by 90 % at 60 minutes of etching time. The ideal haze value range of 3~7 % and transmittance value range of above 90 % were achieved in the period of 240 to 720 minutes of etching time for the selected concentration of the chemical etchant.

A Study on Microstructures and Cryogenic Mechanical Properties of Electron Beam Welds between Cast and Forged Inconel 718 Superalloys for Liquid Rocket Combustion Head (액체로켓 연소기용 Inconel 718 주조 및 단조 합금의 전자빔 용접부 미세조직 및 극저온 특성)

  • Characterization of microstructures and cryogenic mechanical properties of electro beam (EB) welds between cast and forged Inconel 718 superalloys has been investigated. Optimal EBW condition was found in the beam current range of 36~39 mA with the constant travel speed of 12 mm/s and arc voltage of 120 kV for 10 mm-thick specimens. Electron beam current lower than 25 mA caused to occur the liquation microfissuring in cast-side heat affected zone (HAZ) of EB welds. The HAZ liquation microfissure was found on the liquated grain boundaries with resolidified ${\gamma}/Laves$ and ${\gamma}/NbC$ eutectic constituents. EBW produced welds showing a fine dendritic structure with relatively discrete Laves phase due to fast cooling rate. After post weld aging treatment, blocky Laves phase and formation of ${\gamma}^{\prime}+{\gamma}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ strengtheners were observed. Presence of primary strengthener and coarse Laves particles in PWHT weld may cause to reduce micro-plastic zone ahead of a crack, leading to a significant decrease in Charpy impact toughness at $-196^{\circ}C$. Fracture initiation and propagation induced by Charpy impact testing were discussed in terms of the dislocation structures ahead of crack arisen from the fractured Laves phase.

Characteristics of Indium Tin Oxide Films Grown on PET Substrate Grown by Using Roll-to-Roll (R2R) Sputtering System (롤투롤 스퍼터 시스템을 이용하여 PET 기판위에 성막 시킨 ITO 박막의 특성 연구)

  • The electrical, optical, structural and surface properties of an indium tin oxide (ITO) film grown on a flexible PET substrate using a specially designed roll-to-roll (R2R) sputtering system as a function of the DC power, $Ar/O_2$ flow ratio, and rolling speed is reported. It was observed that both the electrical and optical properties of the ITO film on the PET substrate were critically dependent on the $Ar/O_2$ flow ratio. In addition, x-ray diffraction examination results showed that the structure of the ITO film on the PET substrate was an amorphous structure regardless of the DC power and the $Ar/O_2$ flow ratio due to a low substrate temperature, which was maintained constant by a main cooling drum. Under optimized conditions, ITO film with resistivity of $6.44{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ and transparency of 86% were obtained, even when prepared at room temperature. Furthermore, bending test results exhibited that R2R-grown ITO film had good flexibility which would be applicable to flexible displays and solar cells.
