  • To elucidate the effects of flow rate on the hydraulic fracturing property of andesite, the hydraulic fracturing tests were conducted under three flow rates. As the tests are conducted with 1ml/min, 2ml/min and 3 ml/min under the constant axial load of 40 kN, the breakdown pressures of andesite seem to be constant as 163kg/cm$^2$. The hydraulic fracturing tests were carried out under the temperatures of five stages to elucidate the effects of temperature variation on hydraulic fracturing property of granite. As the tests are carried out under the constant flow rate of 1.7ml/min, with the axial load of 40kN, the breakdown pressures of granite are 168kg/cm$^2$ at room temperature, and 124kg/cm$^2$ at 20$0^{\circ}C$. The breakdown pressure decreases about 25% than that of room temperature with increasing the temperature. Under the controlled flow rates, the initiation pressures of the microcracks of granite are well coincided with the breakdown pressures and these results are also confirmed by the levels of acoustic emission.

  • Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Test specimens were designed with 4.5 aspect ratio. The selected test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, yielding strength of longitudinal steel and axial load ratio. The test results of columns with different longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio and axial load ratio showed different seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness. It was found that the column with low strength of longitudinal steel showed significantly reduced seismic performance, especially for equivalent damping ratio and residual displacement. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design).

  • This paper presents an experimental result and suggests the confinement effect of headed cross tie in reinforced concrete(RC) columns subjected to cycling horizontal loads under constant axial load. Five RC columns specimens were manufactured, taking confined type of transverse reinforcement, whether or not using cross tie, end detail of cross tie (hooked or headed), and axial stress in column as major variables, Cyclic horizontal load applied to the columns under constant axial stress and the effect of cross tie to structural capacity of column was evaluated from the test. The column without cross tie failed showing bending deformation of hoop with crack in core concrete at low horizontal load while the column with cross tie showed quite improved strength and ductility by suppressing bending deformation of hoop as well as buckling of longitudinal bar at once even after crack in core concrete. At high lateral displacement, the column with hooked cross tie showed the failure pattern loosing the confining force of cross tie since the $90^{\circ}$ hooked part of cross tie was stretched out and the cracked core concrete lumps were came off. However, the column with headed cross tie showed very stable behavior since the head of cross tie effectively confined the hoop and longitudinal bars even at high lateral displacement.

  • This paper deals with the elastica of deflected cantilever column with the constant volume. The columns are subjected to combined loads consisted of an axial compressive load and a couple moment at the free end. Differential equations governing the elastica of such column are derived, in which both the effects of taper type and shear deformation are included. Three kinds of taper types are considered: linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers. Differential equations are solved numerically to obtain the elastica of objective columns. The effects of various system parameters on the elastica are investigated extensively. Experimental studies were carried out in order to verify the theoretical results of non-linear behavior of the elasticas.

  • This paper deals with buckling loads of the column with the constant surface area. The shape function of variable column depth is chosen as the linear taper. The ordinary differential equation governing buckled shapes of the column is derived based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of such column subjected to an axial load. Three kinds of end constraint of hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped are considered in numerical examples. Effects of the column parameters on buckling loads are extensively discussed. Especially, section ratios of the strongest column are calculated, under which the maximum, i.e. strongest, buckling loads are achieved. Also the buckled shapes are obtained for searching the nodal points where the inner transverse supports are simply installed to increase the buckling loads.

  • Free vibration and buckling analysis of multi-delaminated composite beam-columns subjected to axial compressive load is performed in the present study In order to investigate the effects of multi-delaminations on the natural frequency and the elastic buckling load of multi-delaminated beam-columns, the general kinematic continuity conditions are derived from the assumption of constant slope and curvature at the multi-dclamination tip. The characteristic equation of multi-delaminated beam-column is obtained by dividing the global multi-delauunated beam-columns into segments and by imposing recurrence relation from the continuity conditions on each sub-beam-column. The natural frequency and the elastic buck)ing load of multi-delaminated beam-columns according to the incremental load of axial compression, which is limited to the maximum elastic buckling load of sound laminated beam-column, are obtained. It is found that the sizes, locations and numbers of multi-delaminations have significant effect on natural frequency and elastic buckling load, especially the latter ones.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability analyses of columns with constant volume and both clamped ends. Numerical methods are developed for solving natural frequencies of such column, subjected to an axial compressive load. Differential equation governing free vibration of such column is derived. The numerical methods developed herein for computing natural frequencies are found to be efficient and robust. From the numerical results, the dynamic stability regions of such columns are obtained.

  • The additional axial force of CWR(continuous welded rail) is occurred by structure-track interaction, in reverse, fixed supports of structure are applied the large load by that. Ratio of load which transferred on support through the bridge superstructure with one-side REJ by acceleration and braking load are stated in High-Speed Rail Design Criteria(2005). On the other hand the horizontal forces of support delivered to the load due to thermal loads has been no report about the criteria. Therefore, this study was performed the review of the reaction and displacement on support by structure-track interaction in a special bridge(composite brdiges, 45+55+55+45=200m) with REJ acting on the temperature load. As a result, because fixed support of a special bridge or a continuous bridge with REJ under the temperature load which is constant load has been acted the large lateral load by structure-track interaction, when determining the fixed bearing capacity of structure should be reflected in the results to secure the safety of structures was confirmed.

  • An experimental investigation to study the behavior of low rise structural walls using high strength concrete is presented. The test parameter included in the study were the level of constant axial load. The shear strength of walls is predicted by the design provision given in the current the American Concrete Institute Building Code ACI 318-95 and Architectural Institute Japan Code AIJ. The predictions are compared with the test results reported herein as well as those available in the literature.

  • Three high strength reinforced concrete structural walls were tested under the combined action of a constant axial and a horizontal cycle load. The aim of the tests has been to investigate the effects of the web horizontal reinforcement on hysteretic behavior of wall. The results have helped to identify the causes of wall failure and have demonstrated the web horizontal reinforcement does not appear have a significant effect on shear capacity, stiffness and energy dissipation but have a significant effect on the failure mode of the walls.
