This paper presents the influence of various flexural strengthening design criteria specified by three important design guidelines (ACI440, TR55, FIB14) on the resulting strength, ductility and conservativeness of FRP strengthened RC elements. Various generalised mathematical relations in non-dimensional form are presented that can be employed to develop design aids for the FRP-strengthening process. A design methodology is prescribed based on these equations enabling the designer to optimally and intuitively incorporate sufficient ductility while designing for strength. In order to better interpret conservativeness within design codes, four distinct levels of embedded conservativeness are identified, which cover the entire range of sources of conservativeness. Finally, a detailed parametric study is presented, using the proposed design equations and methodology, to determine the influence of each of these four levels of conservativeness on final design solutions. Specific criteria that are useful while calibrating design guidelines are also presented.

This article aims to elucidate the meaning of Conservativeness and Progress through the hermeneutical discussion about Tradition and Ideology. This study is concerned with Contemporary Hermeneutics, especially H.G. Gadamer, J. Habermas, and P. Ricoeur's Hermeneutics. We will find conservative aspects of Gadamer's Hermeneutics and progressive aspects of Habermas's Hermeneutics through debate on Hermeneutics between Gadamer and Habermas. And we will deal with the meaning of the concept of Conservativeness and Progress in context of Hermeneutics. Then, we will find the difference and common feature, the uppermost limits between Gadamer and Habermas's Hermeneutics in terms of Ricoeur's view. In this context, we will lastly pursue a way of solution about problem of Idea, that is Conservativeness vs Progress through hermeneutical Synthesis.

Religion is deeply connected with human culture and life, and affects all areas of religious people's lives. The aim of this study was to find out how fashion-conservativeness of religious people and non-religious people differ in Korea. Ten religious people and ten atheists all in their twenties were interviewed to find out the differences between religious people and non-religious people related to their viewpoints on clothes. The twenties age group was selected because people in their twenties are sensitive to fashions and styles, and a fair proportion of males and females were selected. The subjects were asked demographic questions, questions about their religion and faith, whether or not they thought they were conservative or affected by religion, and finally, what they thought of photographs of certain styles. 12 photographs from the 2006-7 F/W collections of London, Paris, New York and Milan were presented to the subjects. The photographs were from the Vogue U.K. website and divided into 6 major styles based on verbal evidence used to describe the collections in catwalk reports: "Sexy," "attitude/confidence," "luxury," "sophisticated/chic," "feminine," and "rock." In conclusion, religious people were found to be more conservative than non-religious people in their twenties because they prefer more conservative and covered up styles, have more negative views of bold and skin-showing trends, and regard some styles to be too sexy when non-religious people do not.

It is important to calculate the exact crack opening area in the cracked pipe subjected to axial force and bending moment. Among many solutions for obtaining the crack opening displacement, Paris-Tada's expression, which is derived from energy method, is open used in fracture analysis for piping crack problems because of its simplicity. But Paris-Tada's equation has conservativeness when radius over thickness ratio(R/t) is ten or less, for it is based on the stress intensity factor solution having a compliance function derived from a simple shell theory. In this paper we derived a new expression using a different stress intensity factor solution which is able to consider the variation of compliance through wall thickness in a cracked pipe. Conservativeness of both equations was examined and compared to finite element analysis results. Conservativeness of the new equation is decreased when R/t > 10 and increased slightly when R/t < 10 compared with Paris-Tada's. But Both equations were highly conservative when R/t < 10 compared with finite element analysis results.

This paper aims to scrutinize the possibility of mereology as philosophically satisfiable metalogic. Motivation for this is straightforward. As I see, a traditional approach to metalogic presented in the name of mathematical logic posits the existence of mathematical entities such as sets, functions, models, etc. to give definitions of logical concepts like logical consequence. As a result, whenever logic is used in any individual sciences, this set-theoretical metalogic cannot but add these mathematical entities to the domain of them. This fact makes this approach contradict to the ontological conservativeness of logic. Mereology, however, has been alleged to be ontologically innocent, while it is a formal system very similar to set theory. So it may well be that some people thought of mereology as a good substitute for set theoretic metalanguage and concepts for ontologically neutral metalogic. Unfortunately, when we look into argument for the ontological innocence of mereology, we can find that mereological entities such as mereological sums or fusions are not ontologically neutral. Thus we can conclude that mereological approach to metalogic is not promising at all.

The paste used for conserving and mounting has much to do with the life of cultural properties of paintings. Previous studies on the pastes dealt with elimination of protein from wheat flour as protein has been known to do harm to paste and investigated the effects of starch and protein content on adhesive strength and conservativeness. We found that protein content inversely affected adhesive strength while adhesive strength and viscosity of paste were proportionally related to starch concentration of the paste. The adhesives with more protein showed less conservativeness. Types and number of microorganisms were found to increase as protein percentage increased. All these results points that the higher content of protein in adhesive formula support higher microbial growth with reduced adhesive strength, but higher flexibility. The optimized paste of conservation treatment was wheat starch paste with not only minimize viscosity but also maximized adhesive strength.

This paper, which is an extension of a previous work by Viola et al. (2002), deals with the dynamic stability of beams under a triangularly distributed sub-tangential forces when the effect of an elastically restrained end is taken into account. The sub-tangential forces can be realised by a combination of axial and tangential follower forces, that are conservative and non-conservative forces, respectively. The studied beams become unstable in the form of either flutter or divergence, depending on the degree of non-conservativeness of the distributed sub-tangential forces and the stiffness of the elastically restrained end. A non-conservative parameter ${\alpha}$ is introduced to provide all possible combinations of these forces. Problems of this kind are usually, at least in the first approximation, reduced to the analysis of beams according to the Bernoulli-Euler theory if shear deformability and rotational inertia are negligible. The equation governing the system may be derived from the extended form of Hamilton's principle. The stability maps will be obtained from the eigenvalue analysis in order to define the divergence and flutter domain. The passage from divergence to flutter is associated with a noticeable lowering of the critical load. A number of particular cases can be immediately recovered.

A novel method of transient stability analysis is presented in this paper. The proposed method extracts data points near the basin-of-attraction boundary and then builds a support vector machine (SVM) model learned from the generated data. The constructed SVM classifier has been shown to reduce dramatically the conservativeness of the estimated basin of attraction.
