The titanium miniplate osteosynthesis system has been used for fixation of bone fragments in the maxillofacial areas due to easy manipulation and even has been proposed for unnecessity of miniplate removal because of the biocompatibility and the corrosion resistance. But recently, there have been some suggestions for its removal, on the basis of findings that there have been pigmentations around the adjacent tissues during miniplate removal procedure and they are the depositions of metal particles. Purposes of this study are to ascertain the presence and nature of pigmentation observed within tissues adjacent to titanium miniplate, and to suggest possible causes of it. We could observe the black pigmentation during miniplate removal procedure for recent about 1.5 year. Pigmented tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin(H-E) for light microscophic(LM) examination to investigate the black pigmentations and the histomorphology around them. The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray(EDX) analysis was used to examine the ultrastructural nature of pigmentations. Many metal particles with variable sizes and shapes were seen in the connective tissue by SEM and were identified as titanium by EDX.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status of legal disputes in the Oriental medical clinics and hospitals in South Korea, and to suggest their possible solutions. Methods: Legal dispute cases advised by the Association of Korean Medicine from January 2005 to April 2012 were collected and analyzed. Results: 196 Oriental medical dispute cases were analyzed for the study. Problems in musculoskeletal system and connective tissues (37 cases) were the most common cause of Oriental medical disputes. As per treatment methods related to the dispute, acupuncture (66 cases) and herbal medicine (63 cases) were indicated as the two most common causes. The most common initial problems the patients had at the beginning of their treatment were musculoskeletal system and connective tissues problems (87 cases). Out of 196 dispute cases, only 49 were found to be the fault of Oriental medical doctors. Conclusions: This study can be used as a basis to prevent possible Oriental medical disputes. Subsequent studies should be based on a more comprehensive and extensive range of data.
Purpose: Perceiving the experience that $MRD_1$ is increased after small-incision double-eyelid operation, it has been statistically verified the improvement of $MRD_1$ retrospectively. Therefore, we suggest new interpretation for Korean-specific small eye and more definite classification for ptosis. Methods: In operation, we made 3 small incisions according to the line designed on upper eyelid and removed some soft tissues including connective tissues. Then, figure-of-8 continuous buried ligation was performed through the incision windows. This study is a retrospective study, measures $MRD_1$ changes and excursion distance change of eyelid margine and eyebrow using pre-and post-operative photos of 14 patients. Results: Postoperative photos were taken on the 4th day and all of 14 patients had an improvement in $MRD_1$ statistically. The excursion distance of upper eyelid was improved in half of patients, though not in the range of statistical verification. It was statistically confirmed that the movement of eyebrow was reduced after operation. Conclusion: It is thought that $MRD_1$ improvement without any operation on levator complex means that soft tissue including connective tissue eliminated in operation restricts the movement of upper eyelid. It is defined such factors as burden factors and such phenomenon as burdened eyelid. It is thougt that Korean's small eye is mainly burdened eyelid and cosmetic improvement may be obtaind even by removing such burden factors.

Cyclosporine A(CsA) is a powerful immunossuppresive agent used to prevent graft rejection of organ and treat autoimmune disease. One of the major side effects associated with CsA treatment is the development of gingival overgrowth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression and association of the several growth factors in gingival overgrowth induced CsA using by immunohistochemical technique. Normal tissues as control were obtained from healthy normal gingivae and overgrowth gingival tissues as experiments were obtained from the patients taken the CsA. The expressions of the MMP-1, TIMP-1, TGF$\beta$-1, p21, p53, PCNA were evaluated by immunohistochemical technique. The more overgrowth was detected at the epithelial and connective tissue area in experimental group. The MMP-1, TGF$\beta$-1, p21, p53, PCNA expressions were significantly increased in experimental group. The TIMP-1 expressions was not significantly increased in experimental group. We could conclude that the gingival overgrowth induced CsA was related with the collagen matabolism in connective tissue and also the production of the growth factor from epithelial tissue.
A number of toxicants have been incriminated as a causing hepatic disease. Among many detrimental injury, alcohol has been noted for hepatitis, fatty liver, fibrosis, and hepatic cirrhosis. The purpose of this study was to develop animal model for hepatic fibrosis in pigs fed ethanol, and to search for a new anti-fibrogenic agent via this model. Twelve male Landrace pigs were divided into 3 groups of 4 animals each. Group 1, 2 and 3 were fed with active ceramic water only, ceramic water + liquid diet containing 15% ethanol and normal tap water + liquid diet containing 15% ethanol for 12 weeks, respectively. At week 12, all pigs were immediately sacrificed for collection each tissue and blood. Serologically, serum ALT and AST levels were significantly reversed in group 2, as compared to group 3. They were normal range in pigs of group 1. Microscopically, macrovesicular lipid droplets and moderate hepatocellular necrosis were evident in the tap water + ethanol fed group 3. However, the active ceramic water treated group 1 showed normal architecture. Moreover, in group 2, mild fatty changes and necrosis were observed in hepatocytes. Collagen fibers were increased in spaces surrounding periportal and interlobular connective tissues in the group 3 of tap water + ethanol, but collagen synthesis and its thickness of fibrotic septa connecting portal tracts were markedly reduced in the group 2 of ceramic water + ethanol. Myofibroblasts were detected mainly in the interlobular connective tissues of pig liver of group 3 treated ethanol and tap water. Few to no myofibroblasts were observed in groups 1 and 2. CYP2E1 was not or rarely detected in group 1 fed ceramic water. However, group 2 showed slightly activation of CYP2E1 in the area of pericentral vein, while CYP2E1 was significantly activated in group 3 fed tap water and ethanol. Based on the above data, we believe that we have developed a unique alcohol induced fibrosis model in pig, which will be useful in developing anti-fibrotic agents and drugs. Furthermore, the active ceramic water used in our study had an inhibitory and may be protective against ethanol induced hepatic toxicity and fibrosis.
Many synthetic bone materials have been studied for their potential of regenerative effects in periodontal tissue. Safflower seeds have been traditionally used as a drug for the treatment of fracture and blood stasis in oriental medicines. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the osseous responses in rat calvarial defects between bone substitutes such as calcium carbonate and bovine-derived hydroxyapatite and feeding of safflower seeds. The calvarial defects were made with 8 mm trephine bur in 24 Sprague-Dawley rats. Two graft materials were implanted in each experimental groups, whereas the control and safflower seed feeding groups were sutured without any other treatment. And then the rats of safflower seed feeding group were supplied with 3 g/day of safflower seeds. Each group was sacrificed at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. To study a histopathology related to bone healing and regeneration, Goldner's Masson Trichrome stain was done at each weeks. The tissue response was evaluated under light microscope. There were more osteoblastic activity, new bone formation, dense bony connective tissues in bovine-derived hydroxyapatite group compared to other groups at 8 weeks. The osseous defect area of safflower seed feeding group was filled with prominent fibrous tissues, where less inflammatory infiltration and new capillary proliferation. In the early phase of bone healing, safflower seed feeding reduces the inflammatory response and promotes the proliferation of connective tissue. These results suggest that natural bovine-derived HA and safflower seed feeding could enhance the regenerative potential in periodontal defects.

The present study was designed to understand the basic principles of the laser system and to assess the optimal coditions of the Nd:YAG laser irradiation system in order to expand the use of the laser system in the dental field. The laser system used in this study was a pulsed-wave output type and the power level is 9 watts. The incisors of developing rats were irradiated with the laser system explained above for 0.5, 1, and 2 seconds giving energy density 71, 167, and 215 J/$cm^2$ respectively. The rats were sacrificed just after irradiation or 10 minutes and 10 days after irradiation. The specimens were examined with the stereoscope, light microscope and transmission electron microscope. The results are as follows: 1. The tissue removal efficiency (depth of the cavity formed) is increased with the energy density after Nd:YAG laser irradiation. 2. The carbonized area is increased with the energy density. Cracks and melted appearance are seen in all kinds of the energy densities. 3. The lacunae in the damaged alveolar bone by the laser irradiation were empty, while those in the newly formed bone were occupied with the osteocytes. The damaged alveolar bone was repaired by the osteoblasts and macrophages on the periphery of the bone matrix. 4. The damaged enamel was replaced by the loose connective tissues showing many kinds of cells. The ameloblasts were differntiated on the replaced loose connective tissue. 5. The damaged dentin was repaired by the irregular dentin formed by the odontoblasts differentiated from the mesenchymal cells migrated from the pulp core.

Purpose: Non-crosslinked and crosslinked collagen membranes are known to exhibit distinct degradation characteristics, resulting in contrasting orientations of the adjacent tissues and different biological processes. The aim of this study was to conduct a histomorphometric assessment of non-crosslinked and crosslinked collagen membranes regarding neovascularization, tissue integration, tissue encapsulation, and biodegradation. Methods: Guided bone regeneration was performed using either a non-crosslinked (BG) or a crosslinked collagen membrane (CM) in 15 beagle dogs, which were euthanized at 4, 8, and 16 weeks (n=5 each) for histomorphometric analysis. The samples were assessed regarding neovascularization, tissue integration, encapsulation, the remaining membrane area, and pseudoperiosteum formation. The BG and CM groups were compared at different time periods using nonparametric statistical methods. Results: The remaining membrane area of CM was significantly greater than that of BG at 16 weeks; however, there were no significant differences at 4 and 8 weeks. Conversely, the neovascularization score for CM was significantly less than that for BG at 16 weeks. BG exhibited significantly greater tissue integration and encapsulation scores than CM at all time periods, apart from encapsulation at 16 weeks. Pseudoperiosteum formation was observed in the BG group at 16 weeks. Conclusions: Although BG membranes were more rapidly biodegraded than CM membranes, they were gradually replaced by connective tissue with complete integration and maturation of the surrounding tissues to form dense periosteum-like connective tissue. Further studies need to be performed to validate the barrier effect of the pseudoperiosteum.
Osteoporosis is one of the major health problem affecting postmenopausal women. Estrogen deficiency results in an increase in bone turnover, lead to bone resorption and an increase risk of fracture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Capsosiphon fulvecense extract (SCF) on the collagen content of the connective tissues and alkaline phosphatase activity of serum in ovariectomized estrogen-deficient rats. Three groups were surgically ovariectomized (OVX). The fourth group was sham operated. Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to the following groups : sham-operated rats (Sham), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-control), ovariectomized rats supplemented with CsF at 50mg/kg body wt (OVX-CSF50) and ovariectomized rats supplemented with CsF at 200mg/kg body wt (OVX-CSF200). The Capsosiphon fulvecense extracts were orally administrated at 1mL per day. The ovariectomy caused a decreasing in the levels of collagen content in bone, cartilage, skin and lung tissues. However CSF groups, supplementation with Capsosiphon fulvecense extract, were increased the level of collagen content in bone, cartilage, skin and lung tissues than OVX-control group. Alkaline phosphatase activity also were increased and calcium levels were decreased than OVX-control on serum. These results suggest that Capsosiphon fulvecense supplementation prevents postmenopausal bone loss, thus it may be used possibly to improve the quality of life in menopausal women.
To investigate morphological changes in the exocrine pancreas of chicken after pancreatic duct ligation, experimental animals were subdivided to control, 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 7 days and 10 days groupes and all of three pancreatic ducts of chicken were ligated by surgical procedure and then the morphological changes were observed. In pancreatic ducts, once for a while the ducts were dilated on 12 hours after pancreatic duct ligation and then they were obstructed because of proliferated epithelial cells and connective tissues in pancreatic duct. Marginal dissociation of acini was detected in 12 hours after pancreatic duct ligation and then dissociation of acini was increased with time and finally in 4 days after pancreatic duct ligation the acini showed completely dissociation except periductular regions and around pancreatic islets. Most of dissociated acini cells showed marginal condensation of nuclear chromatin and atropy of cytoplasm, namely, apoptotic features were detected in dissociated acinar cells. Interacinar spaces of dissociated acinar regions were dilated and fulfilled with increased connective tissue and in 4 days after pancreatic duct ligation, deposition of lymphocytes and hemocytes was occurred.
