  • Many studies reveal that during destructive earthquakes, most of the structures enter the inelastic phase. The amount of hysteretic energy in a structure is considered as an important criterion in structure design and an important indicator for the degree of its damage or vulnerability. The hysteretic energy value wasted after the structure yields is the most important component of the energy equation that affects the structures system damage thereof. Controlling this value of energy leads to controlling the structure behavior. Here, for the first time, the hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity are assessed at presence of elliptical braced resisting frames (ELBRFs), through an experimental study and numerical analysis of FEM. The ELBRFs are of lateral load systems, when located in the middle bay of the frame and connected properly to the beams and columns, in addition to improving the structural behavior, do not have the problem of architectural space in the bracing systems. The energy dissipation capacity is assessed in four frames of small single-story single-bay ELBRFs at ½ scale with different accessories, and compared with SMRF and X-bracing systems. The frames are analyzed through a nonlinear FEM and a quasi-static cyclic loading. The performance features here consist of hysteresis behavior, plasticity factor, energy dissipation, resistance and stiffness variation, shear strength and Von-Mises stress distribution. The test results indicate that the good behavior of the elliptical bracing resisting frame improves strength, stiffness, ductility and dissipated energy capacity in a significant manner.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate three-dimensional molar displacement after distalization via miniscrews and a horizontal modification of the trans-palatal-arch (TPA). Methods: The subjects in this clinical trial were 26 Class II patients. After the preparation of a complete set of diagnostic records, miniscrews were inserted between the maxillary 2nd premolar and 1st molar on the palatal side. Elastic modules connected to the TPA exerting an average force of 150-200 g/side parallel to the occlusal plane were applied. Cone-beam computed tomography was utilized to evaluate the position of the miniscrews relative to the adjacent teeth and maxillary sinus, and the direction of force relative to molar furcation. The distances from the central point of the incisive papilla to the mesiopalatal cusps of the 1st maxillary molars and the distances between the mesiopalatal cusps of the left and right molars were measured to evaluate displacement of the maxillary molars on the horizontal plane. Interocclusal space was used to evaluate vertical changes. Results: Mean maxillary 1st molar distalization was $2.3{\pm}1.1mm$, at a rate of $0.4{\pm}0.2mm/month$, and rotation was not significant. Intermolar width increased by $2.9{\pm}1.8mm$. Molars were intruded relative to the neighboring teeth, from 0.1 to 0.8 mm. Conclusions: Distalization of molars was possible without extrusion, using the appliance investigated. The intrusive component of force reduced the rate of distal movement.

  • Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) provides an interactive and personalized service for realizing integrated broadcasting and telecommunication services. Set-top box (SIB) connected to TV is an essential component required for IPTV and has a unique hardware identifier used in identification and authentication. It means that subscriber authentication based on box-level identification is inconsistent with IPTV's main intention of providing personalized services. The proposed solution is to provide an opportunity to use the flexible user-centric authentication mechanism through Java Card applets in IPTV application server and 3G networks. This paper suggests personalized services by moving the user's private data and authentication management beyond the STB to a truly personalized device, the ubiquitous mobile phone. In addition, this paper presents effectiveness and security analysis for verifying the proposal.

  • Methane is one of the important greenhouse gases and methane is the major component of the biogas. A multiple stage membrane process was developed and analysed with the numerical analysis so that the mole fraction of methane in the final product could be kept higher than 0.95 and simultaneously the recovery of methane was also maintained higher than 99% from the biogas using 3 polysulfone hollow fiber membrane modules which were properly connected. As the feed pressure of the biogas, the mole fraction of methane in the biogas and the membrane area in the membrane module are increased, the methane mole fraction of the final product are found to be increased. However, a proper membrane area in the module should be carefully selected in order to achieve the satisfactory goal of 0.95 mole fraction of methane and 99% recovery of methane from the biogas. Even if the multiple membrane process is utilized with the properly selected membrane modules, the limited operating ranges have to be applied in the following parameters : the feed pressure, the flow rate, the mole fraction of methane in the biogas to get both the target methane concentration and the recovery rate of methane.

  • Purpose: A chisel mounted on working implement, such as agricultural machinery used in irregular farming conditions, is subjected to highly variable fatigue loading during work. To ensure the safety of the chisel on a working implement for the duration of its service life, fatigue testing must be performed with the proper fatigue test load conditions. In this study, working loads for a chisel were developed by reconstructing loads from strain gage data collected during field tests and used to conduct fatigue tests on the chisel component. Methods: FE analysis with nCode software was utilized to select the proper quantity and locations of strain gages for load measurements. A fatigue test was performed to experimentally verify the fatigue strength of the chisel and to evaluate the validity of the load history developed with the load reconstruction technique. Results: A strain history for the chisel was obtained from data collected during field tests. The data was filtered for the 14-16 km/h speed range, connected, and merged. The chisel load history was developed using the load reconstruction technique. The resulting load history was expressed as a load spectrum using the rain-flow counting method. Conclusions: A fatigue test was conducted on a chisel under a constant load condition with an equivalent load amplitude and number of cycles, as calculated by Miner's Rule for linear damage accumulation. During the fatigue test, there were no cracks at any position. It is concluded that the fatigue test method proposed in this study can be utilized successfully as a durability evaluation method for the chisel.

  • A ground radiation antenna is designed using a capacitor connected between two ground points by a strip line. This paper analyzes the variations of radiation performance when changing the capacitor position. The surface current distribution of the ground antenna was investigated as the capacitor position is changed, in order to demonstrate the effects on the impedance bandwidth and antenna efficiency. Our antenna is for the Wi-Fi application. It is verified that the capacitor at the end of the strip line provides a wide impedance bandwidth(7.2 % at the 2.45 GHz frequency) and good antenna efficiency(measured as 66 % averaged over the overall Wi-Fi frequency band).

  • The exhaust system is one of the major sources of vibrations, along with the suspension system and engine. When the exhaust system is connected directly to the engine, it transfers vibrations to the vehicle body through the body mounts. Therefore, in order to reduce the vibrations transmitted from the exhaust system, the vibration characteristics of the exhaust system should be predicted. Thus, the dynamic characteristics of the bellows, which form a key component of the exhaust system, must be modeled accurately. However, it is difficult to model the bellows because of the complicated geometry. Though the equivalent beam modeling technique has been applied in the design stage, it is not sufficiently accurate in the case of the bellows which have complicated geometries. In this paper, we present an improved technique for modeling the bellows in a vehicle. The accuracy of the modeling method is verified by comparison with the experimental results.

  • In metabolomics, metabolic pathway is represented by well-displayed graph. Metabolic pathways, especially, have a complex binding structure, which makes the graphical representation hard to visualize. There is a problem that edge crossings exponentially increase as the number of nodes grows. To apply automatic graph layout techniques to the genome-scale metabolic flow of metabolism domains, it is very important to reduce unnecessary edge crossing on a metabolic pathway layout. we proposed a metabolic pathway layout algorithm based on 2-layer layout. Our algorithm searches any meaningful component existing in a pathway, such as circular components, highly connected nodes, and the components are drawn in upper layer. Then the remaining subgraphs except meaningful components are drawn in lower layer by utilizing a new radial layout algorithm. It reduces ultimately reduced the number of edge crossings. This algorithm is the basis of flexible analysis for metabolic pathways.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic facial expressions recognition system to analyze facial expressions (happiness, disgust, surprise and neutral) using tree structures based on heuristic rules. The facial region is first obtained using skin-color model and connected-component analysis (CCs). Thereafter the origins of user's eyes are localized using neural network (NN)-based texture classifier, then the facial features using some heuristics are localized. After detection of facial features, the facial expression recognition are performed using decision tree. To assess the validity of the proposed system, we tested the proposed system using 180 facial image in the MMI, JAFFE, VAK DB. The results show that our system have the accuracy of 93%.

  • An intuitive understanding of the dynamic pattern generation in asymmetric networks may be considered an essential component in developing models for the dynamic information processing. It has been reported that the neural network with cyclic connections generates multiple limit cycles. The dynamics of discrete time network with cyclic connections has been investigated intensively. However, the dynamics of a cyclic connection neural network in continuous-time has not been well-known due to the considerable complexity involved in its calculation. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a continuous-time cyclic connection neural network, in which each neuron is connected only to its nearest neurons with binary synaptic weights of ${\pm}1$, has been investigated. Furthermore, the dynamics and stability of the network have been analyzed using a piece-wise linear approximation.
