  • As the battery capacity requirement increases, battery cells are connected in a parallel configuration. However, the sharing current of each battery cell becomes unequal due to the imbalance between cell's impedance which results the mismatched states of charge (SOC). The conventional fixed-resistance balancing methods have a limitation in battery equalization performance and system efficiency. This paper proposes a battery equalization method based on dynamic resistance technique, which can improve equalization performance and reduce the loss dissipation. Based on the SOC rate of parallel connected battery cells, the switches in the equalization circuit are controlled to change the equivalent series impedance of the parallel branch, which regulates the current flow to maximize SOC utilization. To verify the method, operations of 4 parallel-connected 18650 Li-ion battery cells with 3.7V-2.6Ah individually are simulated on Matlab/Simulink. The results show that the SOCs are balanced within 1% difference with less power dissipation over the conventional method.

  • This paper presents the effect of winding configuration on the kVA rating of a wye-connected autotransformer applied to a 12-pulse rectifier. To describe the winding configuration of the wye-connected autotransformer, position and proportional parameters are defined and their quantitative relation is calculated. The voltages across and currents through the windings are measured under different winding connections. Consequently, a relation between the kVA rating and position parameter is established in accordance with the analysis, and the optimal winding configuration is obtained on the basis of this relation. A wye-connected autotransformer with the least equivalent kVA rating and simplest winding configuration is designed and applied to the 12-pulse rectifier. Simulations and experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical analysis.

  • During the last years, there has been an increased interest in the new energy such as photovoltaic(PV) system from the viewpoint of environmental pollution. In this regard, this paper estimates the power quality of grid-connected PV system. As the maximum power operating point(MPOP) of photovoltaic(PV) power systems alters with changing atmospheric conditions, the efficiency of maximum power point tracking(MPPT) is important in PV power systems. Moreover, grid-connected PV system occurs some problems such as voltage inequality and harmonics. Therefore, this paper presents the results of a grid-connected PV system modeling that contains incremental conductance MPPT controller by PSCAD/EMTDC simulator and investigates the influence that can occur in the grid-connected PV system from aspect of power quality, i.e. voltage drop, total harmonic distortion(TDD) and total demand distortion(TDD). For the case study, the measured data of the PV way in Cheongwadae, Seoul, Korea is used.

  • Because a word of Korean digits is a syllable and deeply coarticulatied in connected digits, some recognition models based on demisyllables have been proposed by researchers. However, they could not show an excellent recognition results yet. This paper proposes a recognition model based on extended and context-dependent demisyllables, such as a tri-demisyllable like a tri-phone, for the Korean 4-connected digits recognition. For experiments, we use a toolkit of HTK 3.0 for building this model of continuous HMMs using training Korean connected digits from SiTEC database and for recognizing unknown ones. The results show that the recognition rate is 92% and this model has an ability to improve the recognition performance of Korean connected digits.

  • We have calculated the energy of three distinct grain configurations, namely completely connected, partially connected and unconnected configurations, evolving during a spheroidization of polycrystalline thin film by extending a geometrical model due to Miller et al. to the case of spheroidization at both the surface and film-substrate interface. "Stabilitl" diagram defining a stable region of each grain configuration has been established in terms of the ratio of grain size to film thickness vs. equilibrium wetting or dihedral angles at various interface energy conditions. The occurrence of spheroidization at the film-substrate interface significantly enlarges the stable region of unconnected grain configuration thereby greatly facilitating the occurrence of agglomeration. Complete separation of grain boundary is increasingly difficult with a reduction of equilibrium wetting angle. The condition for the occurrence of agglomeration differs depending on the equilibrium wetting or dihedral angles. The agglomeration occurs, at low equilibrium angles, via partially connected configuration containing stable holes centered at grain boundary vertices, whereas it occurs directly via completely connected configuration at large equilibrium angles except for the case having small surface and/or film-substrate interface energy. The initiation condition of agglomeration is defined by the equilibrium boundary condition between the partially connected and unconnected configurations for the former case, whereas it can, for the latter case, largely deviate from the equilibrium boundary condition between the completely connected and unconnected configurations because of the presence of a finite energy barrier to overcome to reach the unconnected grain configuration.

  • Grid-connected converters have widely adopted LCL filters to acquire high harmonic suppression. However, the LCL filter increases the system order so that the design of the system stability would be complicated. Recently, sole-loop control strategies have been used for grid-connected converters with L or LC filters. But if the sole-loop control is directly transplanted to grid-connected converters with LCL filters, the systems may be unstable. This paper presents a novel dual-loop power control strategy composed of a power outer loop and a current inner loop. The outer loop regulates the grid-connected power. The inner loop improves the system stability margin and suppresses the resonant peak caused by the LCL filter. To obtain the control variables, a single-phase current detection is proposed based on PQ theory. The system transfer function is derived in detail and the influence of control gains on the system stability is analyzed with the root locus. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control.

  • This paper deals with the instability and resonant phenomena in distribution systems with multiple grid-connected inverters with an LCL output filter. The penetration of roof-top and other types of small photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems is rapidly increasing in distribution grids due to the attractive incentives set forth by different governments. When the number of such grid-connected inverters increases, their interaction with the distribution grid may cause undesirable effects such as instability and resonance. In this paper, a grid system with several grid-connected inverters is studied. Since proportional-resonant (PR) controllers are becoming more popular, it is assumed that most inverters use this type of controller. An LCL filter is also considered at the inverters output to make the case as realistic as possible. A complete modeling of this system is presented. Consequently, it is shown that such a system is prone to instability due to the interactions of the inverter controllers. A modification of PR controllers is presented where the output capacitor is virtually decreased. As a result, the instability is avoided. Simulation results are presented and show a good agreement with the theoretical studies. Experimental results obtained on a laboratory setup show the validity of the analysis.

  • To improve passenger convenience and safety, today's vehicle is evolving into a "connected vehicle," which mounts various sensors, electronic control devices, and wired/wireless communication devices. However, as the number of connections to external networks via the various electronic devices of connected vehicles increases and the internal structures of vehicles become more complex, there is an increasing chance of encountering issues such as malfunctions due to various functional defects and hacking. Recalls and indemnifications due to such hacking or defects, which may occur as vehicles evolve into connected vehicles, are becoming a new risk for automakers, causing devastating financial losses. Therefore, automakers need to make voluntary efforts to comply with security ethics and strengthen their responsibilities. In this study, we investigated potential security issues that may occur under a connected vehicle environment (vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and internal communication). Furthermore, we analyzed several case studies related to automaker's legal risks and responsibilities and identified the security requirements and necessary roles to be played by each player in the automobile development process (design, manufacturing, sales, and post-sales management) to enhance their responsibility, along with measures to manage their legal risks.

  • Dynamic response of two adjacent single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures connected with friction damper under base excitation is investigated. The base excitation is modeled as a stationary white-noise random process. As the force-deformation behavior of friction damper is non linear, the dynamic response of connected structures is obtained using the equivalent linearization technique. It is observed that there exists an optimum value of the limiting frictional force of the damper for which the mean square displacement and the mean square absolute acceleration responses of the connected structures attains the minimum value. The close form expressions for the optimum value of damper frictional force and corresponding mean square responses of the coupled undamped structures are derived. These expressions can be used for initial optimal design of the friction damper for connected structures. A parametric study is also carried out to investigate the influence of system parameters such as frequency ratio and mass ratio on the response of the coupled structures. It has been observed that the frequency ratio has significant effect on the performance of the friction damper, whereas the effects of mass ratio are marginal. Finally, the verification of the derived close from expressions is made by correlating the response of connected structures under real earthquake excitations.
