Wind-driven Current in the East Sea Observed from Mini-met Drifters (기상뜰개로 관측된 동해에서의 취송류)

  • A wind-driven current in the East Sea from Lagrangian measurements of wind and current at 15 m using MiniMet drifters was analyzed. Spectral analysis of the current from 217 pieces of a 10 day-long time series shows the dominant energy at the inertial frequency for the current at 15 m. Wind has energy peaks at a 0.2-0.5 cycles per day (cpd) frequency band. The power spectrum of the clockwise rotating component is predominant for the current and was 1.5-2 times larger than the anticlockwise rotating component for wind. Co-spectra between the wind and current show two peak frequency bands at subinertial frequency and 0.5-0.3 cpd. Coherences between the wind and current at those peak frequencies are significant with 95% confidence and phase differences were $90-100^{\circ}$. From the phase differences, the efolding depth is estimated as 17 m and this e-folding depth is smaller than the estimation by Chereskin's (1999) 25 m using a moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and an anemometer installed at the surface buoy. The angle between the wind-driven current (or ageostrophic current) and wind from this study was also much larger than the global estimate by Rio and Hernandez (2003) using reanalysis wind and drifters. The possible explanation for the discrepancy comes from the fact that the current is driven by a wind of smaller length scale than 250 km but the satellite or the reanalysis products do not resolve winds of length scale smaller than 250 km. Large rms differences between Mini-Met and QuickSCAT wind on spatial lags smaller than 175 km substantiate this explanation.

  • Carnation is considered to be one of the top three cutting flowers in the world, which is a main crop with 21 billion annual volume of manufacture. The four carnation items such as cuttings, seed, plant and unrooted cuttings are imported and exported. Viruses can be easily transmitted during vegetative propagation of carnation. Carnation necrotic fleck virus (CNFV) and Carnation ringspot virus (CRSV) are designated as Korea plant quarantine viruses and inspected. This study was aimed to develop specific primer sets for easy and rapid detection of CNFV and CRSV. Two RT-PCR primer sets were efficiently amplified 288 and 447 bp fragments for CNFV and 503 549 bp fragments for CRSV. Furthermore, developed nested primer sets make possible to high sensitive detection and verification. CNFV nested PCR primer sets all produced band of 147 bp and CRSV nested PCR primer sets did bands of 395 and 347 bp. In addition, plasmid inserted 6 sequences in amplicon were used as a positive control to improve inspection confidence. The successful application of PCR module newly developed in this study will be highly useful for detect of CNFV and CRSV for quarantine inspections.

Effect of Non-paralyzed side and Paralyzed side of Elastic Band Combined with Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Lower Extremity Patterns on Balance in Chronic Stroke Patients (비 마비 측과 마비 측에 적용한 탄력밴드를 결합한 고유수용성 신경근 촉진법 하지패턴이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) lower extremity patterns combined with elastic bands applied to stroke patients diagnosed with hemiplegia through self-training using the non-paralyzed side approach and the paralyzed side approach, and to investigate the differences in the effects. Methods: Nine chronic stroke patients who were being treated not more than twice a week at H, K, R, and C hospitals located in Gangwon-do, performed self-training for 16 minutes, two times per day for four weeks between August and October 2015. The subjects' balance ability was measured using the Tetrax stability index, the weight distribution index, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test before the experiment and four weeks later. Among the statistical methods, paired t-tests were conducted for intra-group comparison of the measurements taken before and after the experiment, and independent t-tests were conducted for inter-group comparison of the ex post facto values. The statistical significance level was set to 0.05. Results: When the lower extremity patterns were applied to the non-paralyzed side group and the paralyzed side group, significant intra-group differences were observed for the Tetrax stability index, the weight distribution index, the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests (p<0.05); however, the inter-group comparisons showed no significant differences. Conclusion: The non-paralyzed side approach was found to be easy for patients to participate in and it also affected the patients' paralyzed side. Although the paralyzed side approach produced good exercise effects in a short period of time, it could result in adverse effects, such as a decrease in motivation and self-confidence. Therefore, these approaches are considered to be more effective when they are selectively applied depending on the purpose of the intervention and the degree of a patients' participation.
