  • This study was performed to compare the characteristics of hydraulic conductivity such as relative conductivity(RC), leaf specific conductivity(LSC), Huber value(HV), specific conductivity(SC), and diameter of vessels(${\mu}m$) and number of vessels($No./mm^2$) in branch junctions of the twenty-one deciduous broad-leaved species. The hydraulic conductivities of branch junctions decreased with increasing junction angle between stem and branch, and with decreasing diameter of branch. The RC and LSC of branch junctions related to branching types(ㅏ, Y, ${\Psi}$ type) were much lower in ㅏ and ${\Psi}$ types than in Y type. The diameter and number of vessels remarkably reduced in branch junctions as compared with the stem and branch.

  • In this study, the mechanism of enhanced thermal conductivity is elucidated on the bases of both electric double layer (EDL) and kinetic theory. A novel expression for the thermal conductivity of nanofluids is proposed and verified by applying to $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids with regard to various temperatures, volume fractions and particle sizes. In dilute nanofluids, the effects of Brownian motion and particle interaction on enhancing the thermal conductivity of nanofluids are quite comparable while the effect of particle interaction due to EDL is more prominent in dense nanofluids. The model presented in this paper shows that particle interaction due to the electrical double layer is the most responsible for the enhancement of thermal conductivity of nanofluids.

  • The design of a ground-source heat pump system includes specifications for a ground loop heat exchanger where the heat transfer rate depends on the thermal conductivity of the ground. To evaluate this heat transfer property, in-situ thermal response tests on four vertical test boreholes with different grouting materials were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over various test lengths. By measuring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop, water flow rate, and heat load, effective thermal conductivity values of the ground were determined. The effect of increasing thermal conductivity of grouting materials from 0.82 to 1.05 W/m$^{\circ}C$ resulted in overall increases in effective ground thermal conductivity by 25.8% to 69.5%.

  • An effective thermal conductivity measurement for suspensions of microparticles in oil mixture is conducted in order to evaluate the shear rate-dependence of the thermal conductivity of suspensions. Measurements are made for rotating Couette flows between two concentric cylinders. The rotating outer cylinder is immersed into a constant temperature water bath while the stationary inner cylinder is subject to a uniform heat fluff. Test fluids are made to be homogeneous suspensions, in which neutrally buoyant microparticles ($d=25{\sim}300{\mu}m$) are uniformly dispersed. The present measurements show strong shear-rate dependent thermal conductivities for the suspensions, which are higher than those at zero shear rate. The shear rate dependent thermal conductivity increases with the particle size and volume concentration.4 new model for shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity of microparticle suspensions is proposed; the correlation covers from zero shear rate value to asymptotic plateau value at moderately high shear rates.

  • In order to characterize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of grout materials used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts and cement grouts being adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). In addition, material segregation can be observed when the viscosity of grout is relatively low. The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than the case of the bentonite grouts. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.

  • Conductivities of polycrystalline ceria doped with several rare earth oxides were measured by AC admittance and DC four probe method. The conductions were separated into grain and grain boundary contributions using the complex admittance technique as well as grain size dependence of conductivity. The grain size dependence of polycrystalline conductivity, which can be adequately described by the so-called brick layer model, appears to give a more reliable measure of the grain conductivity compared to the complex admittance method. Polycrystalline resistivity(1/conductivity) increases linearly with the reciprocal of grain size. The intercept of resistivity vs. inverse grain size plot gives a measure of the grain resistivity and the slope gives a measure of the grain boundary resistivity. It was also noted that errors involved in the analysis of experimental data may be different between the complex admittance method and the impedance method. A greater resolution of the spectra was found in the complex admittance method, insofar as the present work is concerned, suggesting that the commonly used equivalent circuit may require re-evaluation.

  • We made 980 thermal conductivity measurements on igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic rock samples from Korea. The average thermal conductivity of igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic rocks are 3.41 W/m-K, 3.98 W/m-K, 4.10 W/m-K, and 3.21 W/m-K, respectively. Thermal conductivity values of a rock type generally have a wide range because thermal conductivity depends on various factors such as dominant mineral phase, micro-structure, anisotoropy and so on. Thermal properties (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat) are important variables which are used to design a geothermal heat pump(GHP) system. Therefore, our thermal property data can contribute on a efficient design of a GHP system.

  • The undesirable phase transformation of zirconium dioxide at high temperatures can be eliminated by stabilization of the cubic phase with an addition of a selected alkaline earth or rare-earth oxide. In this paper the ionic conductivity of cubic solid solutions in the stabilized ZrO$_2$ by CaO-Y$_2$O$_3$ system was examined. The higher ionic conductivity appears to be related to lower activation energy rather than to the number of oxygen vacancies dictated by composition. Those compositions of highest conductivity lie close to the cubic-monoclinic solid-solution phase boundary. Conductivity temperature data are presented that indicate a reversible order-disorder transition for Zr$_2$2-Y$_2$O$_3$cubic solid solutions containing 20 and 25 mole % $Y_2$O$_3$.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) for Li secondary battery. We investigated the effects of lithium salts, plasticizer addition, temperature dependence of conductivity and electrochemical stability window of polyethylene oxide(PEO) electrolytes. PEO electrolyte completed with LiCIO$\_$4/ shows the better conductivity than the others. PEO-LiCIO$\_$4/ electrolyte, when EO/Li$\^$+/ ratio is 8, showed adequate conductivity around room temperature. By adding propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate to PEO-LiCIO$\_$4/ electrolyte, its conductivity was higher than that of PEO-LiCIO$\_$4/ without those. Also PEO$\_$8/LiCIO$\_$4/ electrolyte remains stable up to 4.5V vs. Li/Li.

Specimens were made of sheet form with the nine of specimens for measurement. Thermal conductivity were measured by Nano Flash Diffusivity thermal conductivity measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 90[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/mm]. In case of semiconducting materials. the measurement temperature ranges of thermal conductivity were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 60[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min].
