This study is focused on the investigation for similitude the requirements between prototype and scaled models to determine the structural behavior of concrete load bearing systems. The scaling concept has been utilized in many engineering branches, has been assisted to engineers and scientists for obtain the behavior of the prototype by using scaled model. The scaling can be done for two purposes, either scaling up or scaling down depending upon the application. Because, scaled down models are the experimentation on scaled models is cheaper than huge structures. These models also provide facilities for experimental work. Similarity relationships between systems are created either by field equations of the system or by dimensional analysis. Within this study, similarity relationships were obtained by both methods. The similarity relations obtained are applied to different load bearing systems and it is determined that the similarity relation is a general expression. In this study, as an example, column, frame, cantilever beam and simple beam are chosen and 1/2, 1/5 and 1/10 scales are applied. The results are compared with the analytical results which are obtained by creating of the finite element models with SAP2000 software of different scaled load bearing systems. The analysis results of all systems are examined and it is determined that the scale factors are constant depending on the scale types for different load bearing systems.
Salk Institute for Biological studies is widely considered as architectural masterpiece of Louis Kahn's. Its iconic plaza with symmetrical concrete structures, overlooking the Pacific ocean in La Jolla, has been acclaimed as a facade to the sky. Little has been written on Kahn's achievements in the building system integration in order to bridge the gap between technology and design. This paper explores the technical issues, the design intents, and the major building systems to identify the Kahn's integration methods between building systems. The project is analysed into four major systems; structure, mechanical, envelope, and interior system. The integration methods of building systems are investigated in physical, visual, and functional aspects. The most distinguished cases of building system integration are the introduction of the interstitial floors between the laboratories and the creation of the smooth and warm materiality of exposed concrete walls. Kahn proposed open floor plans for the laboratories which are capable of easily adapting to changing needs. He also introduced the interstitial floors which are framed of the vierendeel truss systems and deliberately overlapped the structure systems with the mechanical systems such as ducts, water pipes, and electric conduits. The exposed concrete walls mixed with pozzolan ashes look very much like granite or limestone as the result of the physical and visual integration between structure, envelope, and interior systems.

Addition of latex to concrete is known to increase its durability and permeability. The purpose of this study is to analyze air void systems in latex-modified concretes using a reasonable and objective method of image analysis with such experimental variables as water-cement (w/c) ratios, latex contents (0%, 15%) and cement types (ordinary portland cement (OPC), high-early strength (HES) cement and very-early strength (VES) cement). The results are analyzed by spacing factor, air volume (content) after hardening, air void distribution and structure. Additionally, air void systems and permeability of latex-modified concrete (LMC) are compared by a correlation analysis. The results are as follows. The LMC of the same w/c ratio showed better air entraining (AE) effect than OPC with AE water reducer. The VES-LMC showed that the quantity of entrained air below $100{\mu}m$ increased more than four times. For the case of HES-LMC, microscopic entrained air between the range of 50 to $500{\mu}m$ increased greater than 7 times even in the absence of anti-foamer. Although spacing factor was measured rather low, the permeability of latex-modified concrete was good. It is construed that air void system does not have a considerable effect on the property of latex-modified concrete, but latex film (membrane) has a definite influence on the durability of LMC.

The most recent report by ACI Committee 440 on externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening systems states that systems designed to mechanically anchor FRP should be studied in detail and substantiated by physical testing. To select and design an appropriate anchorage system for use in an FRP strengthening system, it is important that findings from previous research studies be known. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of the performance of different mechanical anchorage systems used in FRP strengthening applications. Each anchorage system is discussed in terms of its purpose and performance. Advantages and disadvantages of each system are discussed, and areas in need of future research are explored.
Recent trends in the construction of long span or tall building frames feature the increase use of composite members that steel and concrete is functioning together in what terms of mixed structural systems. One of such systems, RCS (reinforced concrete column and steel beam) system is introduced and closely examined focusing on bearing strength of the composite joint in this paper. The main objective of this study was to develope detail to increase bearing capacity while bearing failure is one of the two primary modes of failure in RCS system. The results show that specimens with the U-type bearing reinforcement detail developed in this study enhanced the bearing strength by 1.20-1.50. The U-type reinforcement is the effective details to increase joint bearing strength compared to others like vertical reinforcement welded to beam flanges.
Seismic safety of continuous span concrete bridge can be enhanced by distributing a large seismic lateral load to each supporting pier. A new viscoelastic device called Shock Transmission Unit(STU), which is a simple cylinder-piston assembly packed with a so-called silicone putty compound, enables the lateral seismic load to be transmitted to the pier by installation of the device to movable bearings of the bridge. The seismic safety of concrete bridges having the STU depends on not only safety of the bridges globally but also safety of anchor systems which anchors the STU to concrete pier. An experimental investigation is performed to study the behavior of cast-in-place anchor and post-installed anchor subjected to shear load statically and cyclically according to different edge distance, embedment length, and anchor spacing. Finally, the experimental results are compared with results by design methods of ACI and CCD, and results by FEM analysis.
Concrete slab cracks monitoring of modern high-speed railway is important for safety and reliability of train operation, to prevent catastrophic failure, and to reduce maintenance costs. This paper proposes a curvature filtering improved crack detection method in concrete slabs of high-speed railway via graph-based anomalies calculation. Firstly, large curvature information contained in the images is extracted for the crack identification based on an improved curvature filtering method. Secondly, a graph-based model is developed for the image sub-blocks anomalies calculation where the baseline of the sub-blocks is acquired by crack-free samples. Once the anomaly is large than the acquired baseline, the sub-block is considered as crack-contained block. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method performs better than convolutional neural network method even under different curvature structures and illumination conditions. This work therefore provides a useful tool for concrete slabs crack detection and is broadly applicable to variety of infrastructure systems.
In this study, two geometrically identical multi-storey steel buildings with different lateral load resisting systems are structurally analyzed under same earthquake conditions and they are compared with respect to their construction costs of their structural systems. One of the systems is a steel structure with eccentrically steel braced frames. The other one is a RC wall-steel frame system, that is a steel framed structure in combination with a reinforced concrete core and shear walls of minimum thickness that the national code allows. As earthquake resisting systems, steel braced frames and reinforced concrete shear walls, for both cases are located on identical places in either building. Floors of both buildings will be of reinforced concrete slabs of same thickness resting on composite beams. The façades are assumed to be covered identically with light-weight aluminum cladding with insulation. Purpose of use for both buildings is an office building of eight stories. When two systems are structurally analyzed by FEM (finite element method) and dimensionally compared, the dual one comes up with almost 34% less cost of construction with respect to their structural systems. This in turn means that, by using a dual system in earthquake zones such as Turkey, for multi-storey steel buildings with RC floors, more economical solutions can be achieved. In addition, slender steel columns and beams will add to that and consequently more space in rooms is achieved.
The changes of stuctural systems in constructing prestressed concrete bridges are investigated according to several construction methods. Based on these investigation, structurally meaningful works are summarized and defined as "Construction Commands". And time-dependent characteristics of concrete and prestressing steels are fully considered. For the static and/or dynamic analysis of three dimensional prestressed concrete bridges at ant construction stages, it is propoesd to use "Comstruction Commands" directly as user's input data. A example of cable syayed bridges is presented by the computer program developed by the present simulation method.
Discrete element modeling (DEM) in concrete technology is concerned with design and use of models that constitute a schematization of reality with operational potentials. This paper discusses the material science principles governing the design of DEM systems and evaluates the consequences for their operational potentials. It surveys the two families in physical discrete element modeling in concrete technology, only touching upon probabilistic DEM concepts as alternatives. Many common DEM systems are based on random sequential addition (RSA) procedures; their operational potentials are limited to low configuration-sensitivity features of material structure, underlying material performance characteristics of low structure-sensitivity. The second family of DEM systems employs concurrent algorithms, involving particle interaction mechanisms. Static and dynamic solutions are realized to solve particle overlap. This second family offers a far more realistic schematization of reality as to particle configuration. The operational potentials of this family involve valid approaches to structure-sensitive mechanical or durability properties. Illustrative 2D examples of fresh cement particle packing and pore formation during maturation are elaborated to demonstrate this. Mainstream fields of present day and expected application of DEM are sketched. Violation of the scientific knowledge of to day underlying these operational potentials will give rise to unreliable solutions.
