  • The PC (Precast Concrete) construction method is a technique where concrete members that have been produced in a plant are constructed on site. Thus, continuity and secure integration of a structure that can be obtained by connecting rebars at splicing joint for PC members are the main areas of concern for this method. To evaluate the splicing and bonding performance according to application of a splice sleeve for connecting rebar in this research study, the diameter of rebar, development length, grouting strength etc. were set as variables. The performance and stiffness of splicing according to the development length of grout strength were measured and evaluated. In addition, by conducting comparative analysis on each of the variables, the factors that affected the splice sleeve for connecting rebar were discussed. The results confirmed that the strength and stiffness of the splice sleeve for connecting rebar were significantly affected by the development length while the increase in performance according to grout strength was not as significant.

  • This study conducted a series of studies to offer a novel method of using CBS-dust that produced as by-product in the manufacture of cement. Four different contents of BS and CBS-dust were adopted for test parameters of this study. Mortar with 50% of W/B was fabricated. First, in the case of the fresh mortar, the flow decreased as the CBS-dust replacement rate increased, but the binder composition ratio BS 45% and 65% showed higher fl ow than Pl ain when repl acing CBS-dust 5%. In the case of air content, overall, the tendency was proportional to the CBS-dust replacement rate, and chloride tended to exceed the reference value at all replacement rates except for the CBS-dust 0% replacement. The compressive strength of the hardened mortar shows the resul t that the strength is improved when the CBS-dust is repl aced by 5% to 10%, and the CSH gel and structure formation is confirmed by microstructure analysis through the hydration reaction when the CBS-dust is replaced. Therefore, for a given condition CBS-dust is used as a early-strength admixture in a concrete secondary product that uses a large amount of admixture without reinforcing bars it can be an effective method for enhancing the strength of concrete as an alkali activator.

  • In accordance with the increased usage of reinforcing materials such as carbon fibers and glass fibers, delamination detection between concrete and the reinforcing material is needed as such delaminations may be a major cause for strength reduction or failure of a structure. In this work, 15 GHz center frequency with 10 GHz band width horn antenna was used to detect delamination between concrete and carbon fibers or glass fibers. The specimens measured $600\;(length)\;{\times}\;600\;(width)\;{\times}\;100\;(thickness)\;mm$, and glass fibers and carbon fibers with a thickness of 1.5 mm were attached on the specimens' surfaces using epoxy. In addition, artificial delaminations of size $50\;(length)\;{\times}\;50\;(width)\;mm$ were placed in the middle of the specimen with thickness of 2, 4, 6 mm respectively together with a 2 mm delamination projecting upwards from the surface of the concrete. Therefore a total of 8 specimens were used, 4 specimens for glass fiber reinforced concrete and 4 for carbon fiber reinforced concrete, containing delaminations as described above. The experiment results were derived by using the difference of area under the curved graph. According to experimental results artifical delaminations were identified in both fiber reinforced and carbon reinforced specimens and these results could contribute to further development of delamination detection technology.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of the connections between L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) and H-beams used in high-rise steel frame structures was investigated. Seven full-scale specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. The variables studied in the tests included the joint type, the axial compression ratio, the presence of concrete, the width-to-thickness ratio and the internal extension length of the side plates. The hysteretic response, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, plastic rotation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and the strain distribution were evaluated at different load cycles. The test results indicated that both the corner and exterior joint specimens failed due to local buckling and crack within the beam flange adjacent to the end of the side plates. However, the failure modes of the interior joint specimens primarily included local buckling and crack at the end plates and curved corners of the beam flange. A design method was proposed for the flexural capacity of the end plate connection in the interior joint. Good agreement was observed between the theoretical and test results of both the yield and ultimate flexural capacity of the end plate connection.

  • The blast damage behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to unexpected extreme loading was investigated. To enhance the accuracy of numerical simulation for blast loading on RC structures with seven blast points, the calculation of blast loads using the Euler-flux-corrected-transport method, the proposed Euler-Lagrange coupling method for fluid-structure interaction, and the concrete dynamic damage constitutive model including the strain rate-dependent strength and failure models was implemented in the ANSYS-AUTODYN solver. In the analysis results, in the case of 20 kg TNT, only the slab member at three blast points showed moderate and light damage. In the case of 100 kg TNT, the slab and girder members at three blast points showed moderate damage, while the slab member at two blast points showed severe damage.

  • A new earthquake design method performing iterative calculations using secant stiffness was developed. The proposed design method has the advantages of convenience and stability in numerical analysis because it uses elastic analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the strength and ductility demands on the members because it performs the analysis on the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculation. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were presented by the comparisons with existing design methods using elastic or inelastic analysis. The proposed design method, as an integrated method of analysis and design, can address the earthquake design strategy devised by the engineer. such as ductility limit on each member, the design concept of strong column - weak beam, and etc. In addition, through iterative calculations on the structure preliminarily designed only with member sizing, the strength and ductility demands of each member can be directly calculated so as to satisfy the given design strategy. As the result. economical and safe design can be achieved.

  • Bottom plates of empty hold are subjected to not only water pressure but also bi-axial inplane loads, specially in the alternate full loading full loading condition of bulk carrier. This kind of plate behaviours is very difficult to be explained and to be estimated using common buckling design guide in the initial design stage of hull structure, therefore, some more concrete studies for this plate structure was performed based on the currently developed buckling estimation formula. In this buckling formula, torsional stiffness effects of edge stiffener are included additionally and effects of elastic buckling strength of plate panel are treated as characteristic value problem. Also considering boundary stiffener effects and inplane and lateral loading, evaluation of bottom plate scantling using this formula, calculated results using various classification regulation of buckling strength and results of first report approach are compared each other and useful guides using developed formula for bottom plate scantling design are discussed.

  • For earthquake simulation test it is essential to make sure the similitude in behaviors between the full scale prototype and the reduced scale model. This paper presents the test results obtained through the cyclic lateral-force test, on two-story RC wall subassemblages. A lower 2-story portion of the prototype structure was selected as subassemblages. The global behavior such as the strength and ductility, and the local behavior such as flexural, shear and uplift deformation were measured. The test results of the 3 : 5 scale specimens representing the prototype were compared with those of 1 : 7 scale models. Two types of subassemblages were used: One with lintel beams and one without lintel beams. The comparison shows that 1 : 7 scale model simulated in general successfully the global and local behaviors of the prototype.

  • This paper concentrates on the nonlinear analysis of prestressed concrete (PSC) containment structures. Unlike a commercialized program which adopts the perfect bond assumption between concrete and tendon in the analysis of PSC structures, a numerical algorithm to consider the slip effect, simultaneously with the use of commercialized programs such as DIANA and ABAQUS, is introduced in this paper For bonded tendons, the apparent yield stress of an embedded tendon is determined from the bond slip relationship. And for unbonded tendons, Correction for the strength and stiffness of unbonded internal tendons is achieved on the basis of an iteration scheme derived from the slip behavior of tendon along the entire length. Finally, the developed algorithm is applied to two PSC containment structures of PWR and CANDU to verify its efficiency and applicability in simulating the structural behavior of large complex structures, and the obtained result shows that both containment structures represent the ultimate pressure capacity larger than about 3 times of the design pressure.

  • As a part of a research program to study the shear reinforcement of flat plate system, this investigation aimed to determine the effect of shear reinforcement type on punching shear strength of monolithic slab-column connection. A total of 5 specimens were fabrication and tested. The dimension of the slab were $2.63{\ast}2.725{\ast}0.18m$, with a centrally located column $0.6{\ast}0.8m$ in cross section. Experimental results showed that the CFS shear reinforcement was not effective because of lack of proper bond with concrete. 3 shear reinforcement except of CFS showed high effectiveness, which resulted in a considerable increment of the punching shear resistance of the connection.
