Concrete columns reinforced with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar have been increasingly used in civil engineering applications, while the research on fire resistance of such structural members is still very limited. In this paper, attempts are made to predict temperature distribution and mechanical performance of FRP rebar reinforced concrete columns in fire. The effect of concrete cover and section size on fire resistance time is studied by the finite element method. Based on a parametric study, a simple empirical formula to predict fire resistance time is proposed for possible adoption in fire resistance design.

PURPOSES : Infiltration of moisture, polluted material, and deicer into concrete, accompanied by freeze and thaw can cause significant deterioration of concrete pavement. In order to protect concrete from deterioration, it is necessary to prevent the infiltration of these concrete external materials. The moisture-repellent agent, which is a surface treatment and maintenance material added to concrete structures to render them water resistant, has advantages such as prevention of water infiltration and security against air permeation. Nano-coat, which is referred to as silicon hydride, is typically used as a moisture-repellent agent. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to use penetration-type Nano-coat as an alternative in order to evaluate its applicability through environmental resistance tests. METHODS : This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat, which can provide water repellency to concrete, in concrete pavements, through various environmental resistance tests such as freezing and thawing resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and surface scaling resistance tests. The applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat was demonstrated based on the specification of KS F 2711, KS F 2456, and ASTM C 672. RESULTS :In the case of penetration-type Nano-coat applied on sound concrete, an increase in concrete durability was demonstrated by the negligible chloride ion penetrability and the absence of scaling, as revealed by visual observation of the surface, after 50 cycles of scaling resistance test. In addition, test result of the application of penetration-type Nano-coat on deteriorated concrete established that concrete surface pretreated by grinding provided improved durability than non-treated concrete. CONCLUSIONS :This study indicates that penetration-type Nano-coat is applicable as an effective alternative, to increase the durability of concrete structures. In addition, it was known that pretreatment of deteriorated concrete surface, such as grinding, is required to improve the long-term performance of concrete pavement.
This paper presents an investigation on the fire resistance of high strength fiber reinforced concrete filled box columns (CFBCs) under combined temperature and loading. Two groups of full-size specimens were fabricated. The control group was a steel box filled with high-strength concrete (HSC), while the experimental group consisted of a steel box filled with high strength fiber concrete (HFC) and two steel boxes filled with fiber reinforced concrete. Prior to fire test, a constant compressive load (i.e., load level for fire design) was applied to the column specimens. Thermal load was then applied on the column specimens in form of ISO 834 standard fire curve in a large-scale laboratory furnace until the set experiment termination condition was reached. The test results show that filling fiber concrete can improve the fire resistance of CFBC. Moreover, the configuration of longitudinal reinforcements and transverse stirrups can significantly improve the fire resistance of CFBCs.
In this study, fire resistance of steel fiber reinforced concrete was investigated Cylindrical and prismatic specimens made of Ordinary Portland Cement plain concrete and steel fiber reinforced concrete were exposed to heating in accordance with a standard time-temperature curve as specified in KS·F22 57, method of fire resistance test for structural parts of buildings, the period of heating was 1 hour and 2 hours. After the fire resistance test, mechanical properties of specimens such as compressive and bending strength, stress-strain curve, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity and bending toughness were investigated. Also the cracks and spallings of the specimens were observed. From the test results, it was confirmed that steel fiber reinforced concrete has a excellent fire resistance than plain concrete in the view of higher residual strength of concrete and smaller crackings because of steel fibers in concrete.

This paper presents the results of fire resistance properties of high performance concrete varying with fiber kinds and the size of metal lath in order to verify the validities of fiber on the spatting resistance by fire. Metal lath, glass fiber and carbon fiber are used to confine the concrete. According to test results, plain concrete without lateral confinement and confined concrete with glass fiber and carbon fiber show entire failure after exposed to fire, while confined concrete with metal lath take place in the form of slight surface spatting by fire, which has favorable spatting resistance of concrete. As for the effect of the size of metal lath, when the size of metal lath is more than 1.2mm of thickness, the residual strength of concrete exposed to fire maintains more than 80% of its original strength. However, glass fiber and carbon fiber does not perform desirable spatting resistance by fire due to loss of lateral confinement of fiber exposed to fire caused by melting of fiber and reducing bond strength between concrete and fiber.
Recent researches of the fire resistance in concrete focus on how to secure relevant functions in the high strength concrete. However, the demand of normal strength concrete less than 40 MPa takes most of the total concrete demand. Therefore, fire resistance study needs to cover not only high strength concretes but also normal strength concretes. This study evaluated the fire resistance performance of 40 MPa concrete columns, taking the concrete covering thickness and the size of section as variables. Consequently, the fire resistance performance improved as the section size and the covering thickness became larger.

The purpose of the paper is to determine the influence of two widely used steel fibers and polypropylene fibers on the sulphate crystallization resistance, freeze-thaw resistance and surface wettability of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Tests were carried out on cubes and cylinders of plain UHPC and fiber reinforced UHPC with varying contents ranging from 0.25 to 1% steel fibers and/or polypropylene fibers. Extensive data from the salt resistance test, frost resistance test, dynamic modulus of elasticity test before and after freezing-thawing, as well as the contact angle test were recorded and analyzed. Fiber hybridization relatively increased the resistance to salt crystallization and freeze-thaw resistance of UHPC in comparison with a single type of fiber in UHPC at the same fiber volume fraction. The experimental results indicate that hybrid fibers can significantly improve the adhesion properties and reduce the wettability of the UHPC surface.

Porous concrete has large continuous voids of 20-30 % by volume, and this concrete is attractive as environmental material in Japan i.e. permeable road pavement, river bank protection with vegetation and green roof system which influence thermal environment. It is necessary to confirm the frost resistance when constructing porous concrete structure in cold region. However applicable test method and evaluation criterion of porous concrete has not defined yet. Therefore, the object of this study is to investigate the frost resistance of porous concrete and this investigation attempts to address this concern by comparing 4 kinds of specified freezing and thawing tests methods (JIS A1148 procedure A/B and RILEM CIF/CDF test) in consideration of actual environment. RILEM freeze-thaw tests are different from JIS A1148 freeze-thaw tests, which are widely adopted for evaluating the frost resistance of conventional concrete in Japan, in water absorption, cooling rate, length of freezing and thawing period, and number of freezing and thawing cycles. RILEM CIF test measures internal damage and is primarily applicable for pure frost attack. CDF test is appropriate for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt attack. JIS A1148 procedure A/B showed extremely low frost resistance of porous concrete if the large continuous voids were filled with water and the ice expansion in the large continuous voids set in during cooling. Frost resistance of porous concrete was improved by mixing coarse aggregate (G7) which particle size is smaller and fine aggregate in JIS freezing and thawing tests. RILEM CIF/CDF test showed that freeze-thaw and de-icing resistance of porous concrete was seems to be superior in that of conventional concrete.

A lot of considerations on the spatting by fire of high performance concrete should be taken into for fire resistance of the concrete structures. In this paper, fire resistance of high performance concrete is described using polypropylene fiber, which is known to be contributed to fire resistance. Strength level and member size are varied with. According to test results, spatting by fire takes place more easily, as W/C increases and member size decreases. It shows that concrete containing polypropylene fiber has good effects on preventing spatting by fire. In case high performance concrete does not contain polypropylene fiber, residual strength shows to be decreased remarkably compared :o that of normal concrete. Whereas, in case 0.1% of polypropylene fiber contents, high performance concrete shows higher residual strength than that of normal concrete. As member size is smaller, residual strength shows to be decreased.

The strength of steel material in a concrete filled steel tube (CFT) is reduced in fire, but the filled interior concrete structurally ensures the fire resistance due to its high thermal capacity. More, the contractibility of CFT is excellent since it can be constructed without form work. This research analyzed the interior concrete strength and deformation characteristics, which are the influence factors of the fire resistance of CFT, in proportion to the axial load ratio. The fire resistance performance according to changes of the axial load ratio showed great fluctuation. As $280{\times}280{\times}6$ CFT columns with the concrete strengths of 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the axial load ratios of 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 in accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7 were heated with loading to examine the fire resistance performance, the 24 MPa concrete exhibited the fire resistance time as 27, 113, and 180 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 respectively. In case of 40 MPa concrete, the fire resistance time were turned out to be 19 and 28 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. The results of 40 MPa concrete showed the much lower fire resistance performance when comparing with those of 24 MPa concrete. The fire resistance performance was not increased significantly when the axial load ratio was reduced. Therefore, the deceased fire resistance performance of high strength concrete is assumed to be caused by the internal pressure increase upon the heat application.
