  • In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.

  • A theoretical method to predict the interfacial stresses in the adhesive layer of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate is presented. The analysis provides efficient calculations for both shear and normal interfacial stresses in reinforced concrete beams strengthened with composite plates, and accounts for various effects of Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of adhesive. Such interfacial stresses play a fundamental role in the mechanics of plated beams, because they can produce a sudden and premature failure. The analysis is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility approach developed by Tounsi. In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both the reinforced concrete beam and bonded plate. The paper is concluded with a summary and recommendations for the design of the strengthened beam.

  • In the composite deck system, beams and deck plates deflect during construction. This lens-shaped deflection may cause problems in the serviceability of a building. Therefore, it should be compensated to be level. Several methods for leveling of floor slab are available, such as (1) increasing stiffness of structural members, (2) propping floor system, (3) cambering beams, (4) pouring additional concrete. In this study, additional weight and volume of concrete for level compensation are examined for various size of floors.

  • Behavior of concrete elements under the effect of high-speed projectiles has gain increasing interest recently. It's necessary to understand how far the concrete can absorb the effect of bullets in order to save the occupants when design security and military infrastructures. This study presents a total of 18 concrete slabs casted and tested under reinforcement ratios, 0%, 0.35% and 0.7%. Parameters interested were slab thickness, (50 mm, 100 mm, and 150 mm) and type of weapon. All specimens tested to investigate their response under the effect of attacking by two common types of weapon. In general, it was found that projectile penetration was controlled by their thickness regardless the steel reinforcement ratio. However, the steel reinforcement controls the damage.

  • In recent years, FRP plates have been studied for flexural reinforcement of RC structures due to easy installation and good quality control. This study presents experimental results for the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of the RC beams using thin CFRP and GFRP stripe made by the pultrusion process. For the selected FRP strips of various thicknesses and widths, it was demonstrated that both flexural strength and ductility were considerably increased with relatively easy installation when compared to the other methods used for the composite reinforcement.

  • Numerical studies were performed to investigate the seismic performance of Flat Plate System. For the numerical studies, a computer program for Finite Element analysis was developed. Parametric studies were performed to investigate variations of strength and ductility of flat plate with major parameters: gravity load, reinforcement ratio, thickness, column sizes. The numerical results provide a valuable insights on the behavior of flat plates. The comparison with the current design method shows that the current design methods for strength and ductility need to be improved in some aspects.

  • The final objective of this study is to develop the design criteria and practical guidelines for the reasonable strengthening of damaged beams. A basic experimental program was set up and several series of test beams have been prepared. Major test variables the strengthened beams by carbon fiber sheets as well as conventional steel plates. The results of the present study are discussed.

  • This paper presents a design procedure using the moment magnifier method that is applicable to RC flat plates subjected to combined axial compressive and uniform or non-uniform floor load. Based on the numerical results, the design values of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity, that define the buckling force, have been proposed. Using these design values, this paper provides the design procedure for the moment magnifier method.

  • The design methods for the steel plate strengthened RC structures are not well established yet because the structural behavior of plated RC beams is more complex than that of regular unplated ones. The main purpose of this paper is to present the premature failure mechanism of steel plate strengthened RC beams. The analytical models of interfacial stress and normal are also proposed in this paper. The comparisons between the analytical results using the proposed theory and experimental ones relatively satisfied.
