  • Since the operation period of nuclear power plants has increased, the degradation of buried pipes gradually increases and recently it seems to be one of the emerging issues. Maintenance on buried pipes needs high quality of management system because outer surface of buried pipe contacts the various soils but inner surface reacts with various electrolytes of fluid. In the USA, USNRC and EPRI have tried to manage the degradation of buried pipes. However, there is little knowledge about the inspection procedure, test and manage program in the domestic nuclear power plants. This paper focuses on the development and build-up of real-time monitoring and control system of buried pipes. Pipes to be tested are tape-coated carbon steel pipe for primary component cooling water system, asphalt-coated cast iron pipe for fire protection system, and pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe for sea water cooling system. A control system for cathodic protection was installed on each test pipe which has been monitored and controlled. For the calculation of protection range and optimization, computer simulation was performed using COMSOL Multiphysics (Altsoft co.).

  • Recently, the use of buried glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes is widespread and ever increasing trend in the industry. GRP pipes are attractive for use in harsh environments, such as for the collection and transmission of liquids which are abrasive and/or corrosive. The structural behavior of a GRP pipes buried under the ground is different from that of a rigid one made of concrete or clay, for example. A GRP pipe buried under the ground is deflected circumferentially by several percent and the stresses in the pipe are mainly compressive stresses. A GRP pipes has been introduced by a number of manufacturers for selection and used by underground pipeline designers. In all cases, the modified Spangler's equation is recommended by these manufacturers for predicting the ring deflection of these pipes under dead and live loads. In this paper, the ring deflection of buried GRP pipe is evaluated and discussed based on the result of analytical investigation.

Different mixing proportions are tried to find an optimum mixing proportion of permeable polymer concrete. The tests are carried out at 20$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ and 60$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ relative humidity. At 7 days of curing, compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strengths and water permeability ranged between 239~285kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 107~133kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 37~46kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 4.612~5.913$\ell$/$\textrm{cm}^2$/h, respectively. It is concluded that the blast furnace slag and fly ash can be used in permeable polymer concrete.

Also, this study is performed to develop the porous polymer concrete using recycled coarse aggregate and blast furnace slag for application of structures needed permeability. At 7 days of curing, compressive strength, flexural strength, water permeability and flexural load are in the ragge of $17\~21MPa,\;5\~7MPa,\;4.1\times10^{-2}\~7.7\times10^{-2}cm/s$, respectively. It is concluded that the recycled aggregate can be used in the porous polymer concretes.

  • Korean traditional Ondol with the sensible heat storage medium has been for a long time used as residential heating system, in these days the concrete Ondol without the heat storage medium was realized as the heating system in the private houses and the apartments. This floor heating system is good for our health. But the concrete Ondol is not desirable for the energy saving and for the maintenance of comfortable room temperature because the heat storage medium is not employed in the concrete Ondol. And as the hot water circulating pipes ate buried under the the concrete floor, the concrete Ondol system has some kind of problems to be improved. Therefore the new type of Ondol system was developed in this study. And the new Ondol was consisted of latent heat storage material as heat storage medium with a great heat capacity and bioceramics as medium to maintain comfortable room temperature. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of latent heat storage-bioceramic Ondol was analyzed theoretically.

  • Among the sewage pipes installed in Korea, the length of concrete pipes exceeding 20 years is 66,334 km (42.5%). Deteriorated concrete sewer pipes need to be repaired due to the leakage of internal sewage, which causes problems such as sink holes by expanding the cavity around the pipeline. In this study, we tried to apply anti-washout underwater mortar with ultra rapid hardening cement and segregation reducing agent to sewage pipe repair. As a result of the setting time test, the final set time was delayed by up to 172% by incorporating segregation reducing agent. In the test for measuring the degree of mortar segregation in water, it was measured at pH 12 or less under all mixing conditions. In addition, the suspension amount was measured to be 50 mg / l or less to satisfy the KCI-AD102 standard by incorporating a segregation reducing agent. In terms of the average value of mortar compressive strength, by incorporating segregation reducing agent, the strength of the specimens produced in air was more than 80% of that of the specimens produced in water. Conversely, the bond strengths of the specimens produced in water were measured to be higher than those of the specimens produced in air. Water resistance was evaluated by measuring water absorption and water permeability. Water absorption and water permeability were reduced by 42.6% and 36.6%, respectively, by mixing segregation reducing agent.

  • The study about the concrete to use recently a light weight aggregate, processed actively. And concrete pumping with a high pressure pump has been popularized, the mechanical development, such as high pressure pumps or pipes, is progressing rapidly. Concrete placing by pumping has the advantage of the reduction of the construction period with workability, easiness of work and the increase of placing, but the quality variation of concrete is caused by pumping is seldom considered, including the increase of the pipe length by high-rising and large-sizing, there by the loss of the unit quantity of water, with pumpability or workability deteriorated. In this research, we will compare and analyze before pumping and after pumping samples of ready-mixed light weight concrete. The result of study as follow. The case of a light weight concrete which the low slump is more decrement compared with high slump light weight concrete in after pumping samples. After pumping the water by pressure of a pump was absorbed to the aggregate inside, and it showed an increase of compression strength about $5{\sim}20%$.

  • Cooling by the flow of water through an embedded cooling pipe has become a common and effective artificial thermal control measure for massive concrete structures. However, an extreme thermal gradient induces significant thermal stress, resulting in thermal cracking. Using a mesoscopic finite-element (FE) mesh, three-phase composites of concrete namely aggregate, mortar matrix and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) are modeled. An equivalent probabilistic model is presented for failure study of concrete by assuming that the material properties conform to the Weibull distribution law. Meanwhile, the correlation coefficient introduced by the statistical method is incorporated into the Weibull distribution formula. Subsequently, a series of numerical analyses are used for investigating the influence of the correlation coefficient on tensile strength and the failure process of concrete based on the equivalent probabilistic model. Finally, as an engineering application, damage and failure behavior of concrete cracks induced by a water-cooling pipe are analyzed in-depth by the presented model. Results show that the random distribution of concrete mechanical parameters and the temperature gradient near water-cooling pipe have a significant influence on the pattern and failure progress of temperature-induced micro-cracking in concrete.

  • This study aims to numerically investigate ground movement around a square steel pipe as well as a group of square steel pipes induced by its and their ground penetration for trenchless construction of a concrete box. From numerical results, ground movement induced by a square steel pipe is much more dominantly governed by vertical displacement rather than horizontal displacement. Ground settlement induced by pipe penetration is much larger as the overburden becomes lower. The settlement is also shown to be slightly dependent upon the sequence of pipe penetration. More careful construction management is highly in demand during the penetration of upper pipes since their induced settlement occupies approximately 75 percent of total ground settlement after the whole construction of steel pipes.
