Long-termly used in water supply, an underground concrete pipe is easily subjected to the coupled action of pressure loading and flowing water, which can cause the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, resulting in its premature failure and lifetime reduction. Based on the leaching characteristics and damage mechanism of concrete pipe, this paper proposes a coupled chemo-mechanical damage and failure model of underground concrete pipe for water supply, including a calcium leaching model, mechanical damage equation and a failure criterion. By using the model, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the failure process of underground concrete pipe, such as the time-varying calcium concentration in concrete, the thickness variation of pipe wall, the evolution of chemo-mechanical damage, the distribution of concrete stress on the pipe and the lifetime of the pipe. Results show that, the failure of the pipe is a coupled chemo-mechanical damage process companied with calcium leaching. During its damage and failure, the concentrations of calcium phase in concrete decrease obviously with the time, and it can cause an increase in the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, while the leaching and abrasion induced by flowing water can lead to the boundary movement and wall thickness reduction of the pipe, and it results in the stress redistribution on the pipe section, a premature failure and lifetime reduction of the pipe.

In case of carrying out vortical crossing water distribution system in expressways or general roads construction, VR(Vibrated and Rolled reinforced concrete) pipes are restricted because of their specification of reinforced spun concrete pipe or on-site made pipe. Therefore, in order to apply VR pipes to those constructions, through the structural behavior experiments of the pipes, VR pipes are compared and verified with reinforced spun concrete pipe and the results are obtained as the following. From the experiments and analyses of Pipe Stiffness(PS) of the pipes, cracking loading is approved to satisfy the KS regulations. Through a direct load test, the cracking loading strength and the maximum load test of VR pipe is larger compared with reinforced spun concrete pipe. Particularly, even if side weld is thin, there is no little change in the cracking strength of VR pipe. The results of the direct load test analysis show that the structural behavior of VR pipe is equivalent or higher compared with reinforced spun concrete pipe in performance and VR pipe could be used as the water distribution pipe for roads. In this study, through pipe stiffness, direct load test and load teat on earth, reinforced spun concrete pipe and VR pipe are compared. And as a result, the structural behavior of VR pipe is comprehensively excellent. From the structural behavior tests, VR pipe's section shows more thickness and has uniform characteristics so that VR pipe is considered more favorable than reinforced spun concrete pipe.

In process of reinforced concrete (RC) box structure. the heat of hydration may cause serious thermal cracking. In order to eliminate hydration heat of mass concrete. this paper reports results of hydration heat control in mass concrete structure using the pulsating heat pipe. There were three RC box molds($1.2{\times}l.8{\times}2.4m^3$) which shows a difference as compared with each other. One was not equipped with pulsating heat pipe. The others were equipped with pulsating heat pipe. All of them were cooled with natural air convection. The pulsating heat pipe was composed of serpentine type copper pipe with 10 turns (outer diameter: 4mm. inner diameter: 2.8mm). The working fluid was R-22 and its charging ratio was 40% by volume. The conditions such as the number of turns. the length and the pitch of the pulsating heat pipe and the size of concrete structure were changed. Based on these experiments, it was confirmed that this construction method using pulsating heat pipe was effective to remove hydration heat of mass concrete structure and thus it was possible to prevent harmful thermal crack and construction Period and costs of concrete structure would be cut down.

This study is performed to evaluate performance of the developed pipe when using for underground drainage in fm land, the efficiency of the pipe is examined such as quantity of drainage, water temperature and other field performance in all weather condition. Results of this study, the higher permeability through wall of the pipe is achieved by making various size pores using open-graded aggregate. And in all weather conditions, permeable polymer concrete pipe perform much better than conventional perforated pipes. During rice farming period, quantity of drainage the permeable polymer concrete pipe is 1.25 time greater than conventional perforated pipes. Therefore, use of the permeable polymer concrete pipe is greater advantages when considering collecting and draining capacity compared with conventional perforated pipes.

This paper reports the performance results of hydration heat control of mass concrete walls with pipe cooling system. The thickness of walls ranged from 0.9 to 2.2m. In order to investigate the effect of pipe cooling on the thermal and thermal crack characteristics, the pipe cooling was conducted for 42 walls, and the investigation of thermal cracks was conducted for 14 walls. Based on the investigation, the pipe cooling method decreased the peak temperature of about 13-2$0^{\circ}C$ and the thermal crack width of about 30% for mass concrete walls.

Recently, the design and construction of massive concrete structures are increased, But, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass makes the construction of massive concrete structures be very difficult. Therefore, various techniques of the thermal stress control of the mass concrete have been widely used. One of them is pipe-cooling which reduces the temperature of concrete with flowing water. It was shown to be possible to construct the massive concrete foundation of urban bridge successfully by application of pipe-cooling system with steel pipe and water circulation. It was also found to expected to make it possible to reduce the probability of thermal crack development in a massive concrete foundation of urban bridge by pipe-cooling system.

Pipe cooling method is widely used for reduction of hydration heat and control of cracking in mass concrete structures. However, in order to effectively apply pipe cooling systems to concrete structure, the coefficient of flow convection relating the thermal transfer between inner stream of pipe and concrete must be estimated. In this study, a device measuring the coefficient of flow convection is developed. Since a variation of thermal distribution caused by pipe cooling has a direct effect in internal forced flows, the developed testing device is based on the internal forced flow concept. Influencing factors on the coefficient of flow convection are mainly flow velocity, pipe diameter and thickness, and pipe material. finally a prediction model of the coefficient of flow convection is proposed using experimental results from the developed device. According to the proposed prediction model, the coefficient of flow convection increases with increase in flow velocity and decreases with increase in pipe diameter and thickness. Also, the coefficient of flow convection is largely affected by the type of pipe materials.

In order to control hydration heat in mass concrete, pipe cooling method has been widely used. However, open pipe cooling system cannot be applied to the mass concrete structures when cooling water supply is difficult. To control hydration heat of high strength mass foundation, closed loop pipe cooling system was developed to solve the cooling water supply. This paper reports the performance result of hydration heat control with closed loop pipe cooling system.
There are numerous factors that affect stress distribution in a buried pipe, such as the shape, size, and stiffness of the pipe, its burial depth, and the stiffness of the surrounding soil. In addition, the pipe can benefit from the soil arching effect to some extent, through which the overburden and surcharge pressure at the crown can be carried by the adjacent soil. As a result, the buried pipe needs to support only a portion of the load that is not transferred to the adjacent soil. This paper presents numerical efforts to investigate the stress distribution in the buried concrete pipe under various environmental conditions. To that end, a nonlinear elasto-plastic model for backfill materials was implemented into finite element software by a user-defined subroutine (user material, or UMAT) to more precisely analyze the soil behavior surrounding a buried concrete pipe subjected to surface loading. In addition, three different backfill materials with a native soil were selected to examine the material-specific stress distribution in pipe. The environmental conditions considering in this study the loading effect and void effects were investigated using finite element method. The simulation results provide information on how the pressures are redistributed, and how the buried concrete pipe behaves under various environmental conditions.

Various method have been developed for mass concrete structures to reduce the temperature increase of concrete mass due to exothermic hydration reactions of concrete compounds and thereby to avoid thermal cracks. One of the methods widely acceptable for practical use is pipe cooling, in which cooling is achieved by circulating cold water through thin-wall steel pipes embedded in the concrete. A numerical simulation was performed to investigate the effectiveness of pipe cooling. A three-dimensional finite element method was proposed to analyse the transient three-dimensional heat transfer between the hardening concrete and the cooling water in pipe and to predict the stress development during the curing process. The effects of the cement type and content and the environment were taken into consideration by the heat generation rate and the boundary conditions, respectively. In order to test the validity of the numerical simulation, a model RC structure with pipe cooling was constructed and the time-dependent temperature and stress distributions within the structure as well as the variation of the temperature of cooling water along the pipe were measured. The results of the simulation agreed well the experimental measurements. The results of this study have important implications for the optimal design of the cooling pipe layout and for the estimation of thermal stress in order to eliminate thermal cracks.
