Lightweight concrete (LWC) provides an attractive alternative to conventional piles by improving the durability of deep foundations. In this paper, the drivability of cylindrical and tapered piles made of lightweight and common concrete (CC) under hammer impacts was investigated by performing field tests and numerical analysis. The different concrete mixtures were considered to compare the mechanical properties of light aggregate which replaced instead of the natural aggregate. Driving tests were also conducted on different piles to determine how the pile material and geometric configurations affect driving performance. The results indicated that the tapering shape has an appropriate effect on the drivability of piles and although lower driving stresses are induced in the LWC tapered pile, their final penetration rate was more than that of CC cylindrical pile under hammer impact. Also by analyzing wave propagation in the different rods, it was concluded that the LWC piles with greater velocity than others had better performance in pile driving phenomena. Furthermore, LWC piles can be driven more easily into the ground than cylindrical concrete piles sometimes up to 50% lower hammer impacts and results in important energy saving.
These days we broadly apply drilled shafts for deep foundations to build infrastructures. The defects of the deep foundations cause the decrease of their support load capacity and the increase of settlement, and the subsequent damage of the super-structures. In consequence, non-destructive testings techniques of concrete piles are important for their integrity evaluation. To improve understanding and reliable application of the impact echo method for the integrity evaluation of the drilled concrete piles, numerical studies of the impact response of concrete piles by using axi-symmetric three-dimensional finite element method are peformed for (a) sound piles: (b) piles containing necks, voids and layers of low-quality concrete: and (c) piles in soil and/or above rock. The results of these studies show that the finite element method is effective for evaluating the impact response of drilled concrete piles.

Using the large diameter (D = 2,500mm, L = 40m) batter steel pipe piles, designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during the static compression load test of socketed test piles (D = 1,000mm, L = 40m), static pile load tests for large diameter instrumented rock-socketed piles were performed. The reaction steel pipe piles were driven 20m into the marine deposit and weathered rock layer and then l0m socketed with reinforced concrete through the weathered rock layer and into hard rock layer. Steel pipe and concrete in the steel pile part, and concrete and rebars in the socketed parts were instrumented to measure strains in each part. The pullout amounts of reaction pile heads were also measured with LVDT. During the static pile load test, total compressional load of about 20MN was loaded on the head of test piles, but load above 20MN was not loaded due to lack of loading capacity of loading system. Over the course of the study, maximum pullout amount up to 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded op to 10MN and 1mm of pullout amount was measured. More than 85% of pullout load was transfered in the residual weathered rock layer and about 10% in the soft rock layer, which was somewhat different transfer mechanism in the static compressional load tests.
Sixty four tests were performed in a steel tank to investigate the axial responses of piles driven into organic soil prepared at two different densities using a drop hammer. Four different pile materials were used: wood, steel, smooth concrete, and rough concrete, with different length to diameter ratios. The results of the load tests showed that the shaft load capacity of rough concrete piles continuously increased with pile settlement. In contrast, the others pile types reached the ultimate shaft resistance at a settlement equal to about 10% of the pile diameter. The ratios of base to shaft capacities of the piles were found to vary with the length to diameter ratio, surface roughness, and the density of the organic soil. The ultimate unit shaft resistance of the rough concrete pile was always greater than that of other piles irrespective of soil condition and pile length. However, the ultimate base resistance of all piles was approximately close to each other.
The determination for bearing capacity of precast nodular piles is conventionally time-consuming and high-cost by using numerous experiments and empirical methods. This study proposes an intelligent method to evaluate the bearing capacity and shaft resistance of the nodular piles with high efficiency based on long short-term memory (LSTM) approach. A series of field tests are first designed to measure the axial force, shaft resistance and displacement of the combined nodular piles under different loadings, in comparison with the single pre-stressed high-strength concrete piles. The test results confirm that the combined nodular piles could provide larger ultimate bearing capacity (more than 100%) than the single pre-stressed high-strength concrete piles. Both the LSTM-based method and empirical methods are used to calculate the shift resistance of the combined nodular piles. The results show that the LSTM-based method has a high-precision estimation on shaft resistance, not only for the ultimate load but also for the working load.

The objective of this report is to investigate the effect of factors on the centrifugal compaction of concrete piles with design of experiments. The analysis of sludge and measurement of compressive strength of specimens compacted by centrifugal of vibration were performed. As a result, there were some effective factors like unit content of cement, high and middle centrifugal force and time. It was considered that the process of centrifugal compaction of concrete piles could be optimized with these results.
Hollow prestressed concrete filled steel tube (HCFT) piles, which compose hollow PHC piles inside thin wall steel tubes, are developed. In order to investigate the strength characteristics of HCFT piles, flexural and shear tests were conducted on HCFT piles as well as PHC and steel pipe piles with the same diameter. Results of the test program showed that the flexural strength of HCFT piles was 2.88 and 1.19 times those of ICP and steel pipe piles with thickness of 12 mm, respectively, and its shear strength was 2.40 times that of steel pipe piles. The shear key attached to the inside of thin wall steel tube did not affect the flexural behavior of HCFT piles. It was also observed that the flexural strengths of HCFT piles with diameters of 450 and 500 mm were 35 to 63% higher than the sum of the flexural strengths of its components, respectively, because the strength of concrete in compressive zone increased by confining effect of thin wall steel tube on concrete. HCFT piles used as upper piles in hybrid composite piles might decrease the lateral displacement and increase the structural safety of structures subjected to lateral loads.

Most of the piles are designed as group piles. In certain geotechnical environments, the installation of group piles causes heaving of the already installed piles. The unfavorable effects of pile heaving on pile bearing capacity have been well known to field engineers. However not many engineers pay enough attention to this subject. According to our recent researches, not only the bearing capacity but also the pile material could be seriously damaged due to the installation of nearby piles, especially with the cases of precast concrete piles. When the pull-out force due to installation of neighboring piles acting on the already installed precast concrete pile exceeds the shaft friction, pile heaving occurs. At the same time, if the pull-out force exceeds the allowable tensile strength of the precast concrete pile, tensile failure is inevitable, which is critical for the pile integrity. In other cases the pile material was not damaged but serious relaxation occurred as the results of pile heaving. In this paper, the pull-out mechanism due to the installation of group piles is explained.

Waste Concrete Powder will be generated during the manufacture of construction waste as recycled aggregate Waste concrete. The main component of the waste concrete Powder is a silica-based composition 51% SiO2, waste concrete cement-based composition Al2O3 10%, CaO 26% component are contained. The material is silica sand of PHC piles should experiment by replacing the Waste Concrete Powder. The compressive strength results are as follows. 25% when the Silica was replaced 32.5Mpa, when 50% have replaced 43.4Mpa, when 75% have replaced 45.3Mpa was measured. Compared with the non-replaced test sample it appears that the strength increases. Therefore, it is determined that the practical use of the PHC piles by replacing silica via this experiment is possible.

The necessity for ground reinforcement of structures has been increasing in South Korea because buildings have encountered constructional problems such as inclined structures and collapses caused by earthquakes or differential settlement of the foundations. With regard to a ground reinforcement method, an increasing number of high-strength concrete piles have been used based on their advantages, including a wide range of penetration depth and a high load-bearing capacity. However, problems such as the destruction of a pile head during on-site placement work can occur when the pile has insufficient strength. For this reason, the strength of such piles should be managed more thoroughly. Thus, this study analyzed the strength properties of high-strength concrete piles using blast furnace slag (BFS) powder as a cement replacement, which was generated as an industrial byproduct. The analysis results indicated that the compression strength of the concrete piles increased when 10% to 20% of the cement was replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). In addition, the compression strength of the concrete piles was calculated to be 80.6 MPa when 20% of the cement was replaced with GGBS, which was greater by 5% than that of an ordinary Portland cement (OPC) specimen.
