A simple practical method for determination of moisture transfer coefficient of mature concrete using a combined experimental-numerical approach

  • In this paper, a simple practical method is introduced in which a simple weight measurement of concrete and finite element numerical analysis are used to determine the moisture transfer coefficient of concrete with a satisfactory accuracy. Six concrete mixtures with different water-to-cementitious material (w/cm) ratios and two pozzolanic materials including silica fume and zeolite were examined to validate the proposed method. The comparison between the distribution of the moisture content obtained from the model and the one from the experimental data during both the wetting and drying process properly validated the performance of the method.With the proposed method, it was also shown that the concrete moisture transfer coefficient considerably depends on the pore water saturation degree. The use of pozzolanic materials and also lowering w/cm ratio increased the moisture transfer coefficient during the initial sorption, and then, it significantly decreased with an increase in the water saturation degree.

  • The slurry wall of Inchon LNG receiving terminal tank will be planned the super flowing concrete having properties of high strength (required strength 520kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$), no-vibrating and massive structure in the underground. For the performance of this concrete, we investigate and select all materials, the optimum mix design and sensibility test in the laboratory. As test results, we choose portland blast-furnace slag cement and lime stone powder(L.S.P) as cementitious materials, W/C 41%(W/B 35.4%), S/a 50.8% and unit volume of coasre aggregate 0.30 as optimum mix design. Also test result of the fresh and hardened concrete are satisfied with specifications of slurry wall.

  • Generally, the strength of concrete depends on factors of materials, mix proportions, compaction, manufacturing methods and curing and so on. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the influence of cementitious material type on the compressive strength of ultra high strength concrete. For this purpose, the mix proportions of concrete according to the type of cementitious materials(Fly ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume) and W/B(31.5, 27.5%) was selected. And then air content, slump-flow, O-lot, compressive strength test were performed.

  • The stress-strain curve of concrete confined with both lateral ties and carbon fiber sheet(CFS) is different to that of concrete confined with only lateral ties or CFS. The objective of this study is to investigate the stress-strain relation of reinforced concrete columns confined by composite material. The main variable of the specimens was the content rate of lateral ties to CFS. In the test a total 24 rectangular specimens, which are all 148$\times$148$\times$300mm size. The test results indicated that while the compressive strength of specimens confined with both lateral ties and CFS increased proportionally to the aided amount of two materials, the maximum strain of specimens depended on the larger strain of lateral ties or CFS.

  • Currently the study on the effective use of the fly ash is concentrated as construction materials, which is by product of electric power generating plants. Fly ash, therefore, can be used as concrete admixture for the purpose of not only increasing the concrete quality but also of utilizing materials. Within the country it is not easy to use fly ash for the construction purpose because the properties of fly ash are varied due to the use of different raw ores in the various power plants. And little previous construction experiments and the basic experiments about the formation of bubbles are performed. In this study the water-cement ratio is varied in 3 different values and compressive strength is measured and freeze-thaw experiments are preformed to establish the relationships between water-cement ratios and the durability. And also for each batch of different water-cement ratio fly ash is substituted 10%, 20% and 30% of cement and concrete mixture the admixture and the formation of bubbles and also freeze-thaw resistance.

Effect of Dune Sand on the Properties of Flowing Sand-Concrete (FSC)

  • Sand-concrete is being researched for potential usage in construction in Saharan regions of Algeria, because of shortage in coarse aggregate resources. This research work deals with the effect of dune sand, available in huge quantities in these regions, on the properties of flowing sand-concrete (FSC) prepared with different proportions of dune and river sands. Mini-cone slump test, v-funnel flow-time test and viscosity measurements were used to characterize the behaviour of FSC in fresh state. The 28-day compressive strength was also determined. Test results show that an optimal content of dune sand, which makes satisfied fresh and hardened properties of FSC, is obtained. Moreover, the obtained flow index (constant b) calculated by the help of power-law viscosity model is successfully correlated to the experimental results of v-funnel flow time.

  • In this paper, we present the results of an experimental research on the load-deflection characteristics of full-scale concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP re-bars. Similar researches have been conducted in many countries to extend the service life of concrete bridge decks, which are under harsh environmental condition. Concrete bridge decks are one of the major concerns for the maintenance of bridges. GFRP re-bar available in the domestic construction market was investigated and the concrete deck reinforced with GFRP re-bars was tested under flexure to investigate the applicability of GFRP re-bar on the bridge deck construction.

  • As the importance of maintenance of reinforced concrete structure recently has emerged, the attention of durability of structure has been increasing. There are many studies about durability decline especially due to the carbonation. In order to study carbonation progress after surface repair of carbonated concrete, each carbonation penetration velocity from different repair materials of concrete structure is compared through the experiment of carbonation accelerating CO2 concentration to 20% and 100%. As carbonation infiltration progress is predicted through this study, the counterplan of service life evaluation will be prepared on selection of repair materials of concrete structure.

초유동 콘크리트의 배합설계에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Mix Design of the Super Flowing Concrete)

  • In this paper, the mix design of the super flowing concrete is described with respcet to basic concept, confined water ratio($\beta_p$), volume ratio of water-binder(w/b), volume ratio of fine aggregates($S_r$) and coarse aggregates($G_v$). The primary purposes of this study are to evaluate the effects of cementitious materials(fly ash, slag cement, portland cement), mixing factors ($\beta_p$, w/b, $S_r$, $G_v$)., and to propose the mix design method of the super flowing concrete. As results of this study, confined water ratio($\beta_p$) of cementitious materials is very high (0.99~1.1), and then the ranges of the optimum mixing factors to be satisfied with the super flowing concrete are $S_r$ 47$\ell$ 2%, $G_v$ 52$\ell$ 1%.

Numerical modelling of the damaging behaviour of the reinforced concrete structures by multi-layers beams elements

  • A two-dimensional multi-layered finite elements modeling of reinforced concrete structures at non-linear behaviour under monotonic and cyclical loading is presented. The non-linearity material is characterized by several phenomena such as: the physical non-linearity of the concrete and steels materials, the behaviour of cracked concrete and the interaction effect between materials represented by the post-cracking filled. These parameters are taken into consideration in this paper to examine the response of the reinforced concrete structures at the non-linear behaviour. Four examples of application are presented. The numerical results obtained, are in a very good agreement with available experimental data and other numerical models of the literature.
