  • The work is concerned with an investigation of the advantages stemming from the use of lightweight aggregate concrete in earthquake-resistant reinforced concrete construction. As the aseismic clauses of current codes make no reference to lightweight aggregate concrete beams made of lightweight aggregate concrete but designed in accordance with the code specifications for normal weight aggregate concrete, together with beams made from the latter material, are tested under load mimicking seismic action. The results obtained show that beam behaviour is essentially independent of the design method adopted, with the use of lightweight aggregate concrete being found to slightly improve the post-peak structural behaviour. When considering the significant reduction in deadweight resulting from the use of lightweight aggregate concrete, the results demonstrate that the use of this material will lead to significant savings without compromising the structural performance requirements of current codes.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop of unbonded tendon model considering time-dependent behavior. In this paper, a numerical model for unbanded tendon is proposed based on the finite element method, which can represent straight or curved unbonded tendon behavior. This model and time-dependent material model are used to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of unbonded prestressed concrete structures. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of concrete structures was used. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. The proposed unbonded tendon model and numerical method for time-dependent behavior of unbonded prestressed concrete structures is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • In this study, it was developed eco-friendly inorganic binding material concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag and alkali activator (water glass, sodium hydroxides). Eight reinforced concrete beam using inoganic binding material concrete were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. The major variables were mixture ratio of alkali activator, type of admixture and admixture. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the flexural performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode, the maximum load carrying capacity, and ductility capacity. All the specimens were modeled in scale-down size. The eco-friendly concrete using inorganic binding material encouraged alkali activation reaction was rapidly hardening speed and showed possibility as a high strength concrete. Also, the RC beams using new materials showed similar behavior and failed similarly with RC beam used portland cement. It is thought that eco-friendly inorganic binding material concrete can be used with construction material and product as a basic research to replace cement concrete. If there is application to structures in PC member as well as production of 2nd concrete product, it could be improved the productivity and reduction of construction duration etc.

  • The purpose of this study presents in Relations between cracks in self-leveling material and quality of floor groundwork surface are experimentally examined. As the first stage, the experiment to observe cracks in self-leveling material constructed on floor groundwork made from various kinds of concrete was carried. As a result, following basic findings were obtained. First, observation of cracks should be continued until an increase in width of cracks stop, without constructing any finishing material. Second, degree of cracks may be indicated quantitatively by the product of length and width. Finally, Cracks and separation is not be influenced by specimen size. Based on these findings, the method of predicting cracks by evaluating surface layer quality of floor groundwork will be established.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column sections with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction. The proposed reinforcement details has have economic feasibility and rationality and makes construction periods shorter. A model of column sections with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction was tested under quasistatic monotonic loading. As a result, the proposed reinforcement details for material quantity reduction was were equal to existing reinforcement details in terms of the required performance. In the a subsequent paper, the an experimental and analytical study will be performed for the performance assessment of hollow reinforced concrete bridge column sections with reinforcement details for material quantity reduction will be performed.

  • Advanced material models for concrete are not widely available in general purpose finite element codes. Parameters to define them complicate the implementation because they are case sensitive. In addition to this, their validity under severe shear condition has not been verified. In this article, simple engineering plasticity material models available in a commercial finite element code are used to demonstrate that complicated shear behavior can be calculated with reasonable accuracy. For this purpose dynamic response of a squat shear wall that had been tested on a shaking table as part of an experimental program conducted in Japan is analyzed. Both the finite element and material aspects of the modeling are examined. A corrective artifice for general engineering plasticity models to account for shear effects in concrete is developed. The results of modifications in modeling the concrete in compression are evaluated and compared with experimental response quantities.

  • The purpose of this study is to present different composed material models for reinforced concrete structures (RC). For this aim a nonlinear finite element analysis program is coded in MATLAB. This program contains several yield criteria and stress-strain relationships for compression and tension behavior of concrete. In this study, the well-known criteria, Drucker-Prager, von Mises, Mohr Coulomb, Tresca, and two new criteria, Hsieh-Ting-Chen and Bresler-Pister, are taken into account. It is concluded that the coded program, the new yield criteria, and the models considered can be effectively used in the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete beams.

  • In the case of concrete recently manufactured with a concrete mixing truck, although aggregate and cement are used as the main ingredients, from a costs savings perspective, low quality aggregates are processed and used as concrete aggregate. In the case of these low quality aggregates, the unit volume and unit binder weights are increased for manufacturing, and due to this problems such as dry shrinking of the architecture and economic infeasibility have arisen. Therefore by changing the aggregate material and the unit binder weights that are currently being distributed, this research analyzes the influence on concrete.

  • Geopolymer Concrete is typically proportioned with activator solution leading to moderately high material cost. Such cost can be enduring in high value added applications especially when cost savings can be recognized in terms of reduction in size of the members. Proper material selection and mix proportioning can diminish the material cost. In the present investigation, a total of 27 mixes were arrived considering the mix parameters as liquid-binder ratio, slag content and sodium hydroxide concentration to study the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete (GPC) mixes such as compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. The derived statistical Response Surface Methodology is beleaguered to develop cost effective GPC mixes. The estimated responses are not likely to contrast in linear mode with selected variables; a plan was selected to enable the model of any response in a quadratic manner. The results reveals that a fair correlation between the experimental and the predicted strengths.

  • Damping as a material property plays an important role in decreasing dynamic response of structures. However, very little is known about the evaluation and application of the actual damping of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Reinforced Concrete (FRP-C RC) material which is widely adopted in civil engineering at present. This paper first proposes a stress-dependent damping model for FRP-C RC material using a validated Finite Element Model (FEM), then based on this damping-stress relation, an iterative scheme is developed for the computations of the non-linear damping and dynamic response of FRP-C RC columns at any given harmonic exciting frequency. Numerical results show that at resonance, a considerable increase of the loss factor of the FRP-C RC columns effectively reduces the dynamic response of the columns, and the columns with lower concrete strength, FRP volume ratio and axial compression ratio or higher longitudinal reinforcement ratio have stronger damping values, and can relatively reduce the resonant response.
