  • Strut-and-tie model (STM) has been recommended by many codes and standards as a rational model for discontinuity regions in structural members. STM has been adopted in ACI building code for analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams since 2002. However, STM recommended by ACI 318-11 is only applicable for analysis of ordinary RC deep beams. This paper aims to develop the STM for CFRP strengthened RC deep beams through the strut effectiveness factor recommended by ACI 318-11. Two sets of RC deep beams were cast and tested in this research. Each set consisted of six simply-supported specimens loaded in four-point bending. The first set had no CFRP strengthening while the second was strengthened by means of CFRP sheets using two-side wet lay-up system. Each set consisted of six RC deep beams with shear span to effective depth ratio of 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00.The value of strut effectiveness factor recommended by ACI 318-11 is modified using a proposed empirical relationship in this research. The empirical relationship is established based on shear span to effective depth ratio.

  • The objective of this experimental study was to understand the structural behavior of reinforced concrete continuous deep beams with welded deformed wire fabric(WWF) as shear reinforcement. The structural behavior of deep beams reinforced with WWF was compared with that of deep beams reinforced with orthogonal shear reinforcement which had standard anchorage corresponding to ACI 318-02. Test results showed that the load transferring capacity and the control of splitting cracks in the strut of WWF were almost as effective as those of orthogonal shear reinforcement with standard anchorage.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) on the shear strengths of deep beams with web openings. A total of 18 high-strength concrete deep beams with web openings were tested. Twelve were externally wrapped with four layers of CFRP, six of them strengthened in the horizontal direction and the others in the vertical direction. The parameters of the configuration of CFRP, the sizes of the openings and the locations of the openings were covered in this study. The test results indicates the shear strengths of deep beams with openings sized $60{\times}40mm$ were about 16% higher than that with openings sized $68{\times}68mm$. For deep beams with openings sized $60{\times}40mm$, the lower the locations of openings the higher the shear strengths were. The test results also indicate the shear strengths of deep beams with web openings strengthened by CFRP wrapped in the vertical direction can be enhanced by about 10%. However, the shear strengths of deep beams with web openings strengthened by CFRP wrapped in the horizontal direction can only be enhanced by about 6%. The shear strengths of deep beam, with different size and location of web openings and strengthened by different configuration of CFRP can be reasonably predicted by the empirical formulas of Kong and Sharp.

  • The algorithm and program which implement the bond-slip behavior of pre-tensioned concrete beams to the nonlinear strut-tie model approach, are developed in this study. The validity of the algorithm and program is verified through the strut-tie model evaluation of the strength and behavior of two pre-tensioned concrete deep beams which were failed by bond-slip.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure for the prediction of shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams. A computer program, named RCAHESTC(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile. compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams is verified by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • The current American Concrete Institute(ACI), Canadian Standard Associate(CSA) and CEB-FIP Model Code 2010 provisions on the shear strength of a simply supported deep beam suggest that deep beams should be designed using the strut-and-tie model. Although this is a useful methodology to design members in disturbed regions, the quality of the design is highly dependent on the truss model that designers create. However, Hong et al. derived the shear strength equations of reinforced concrete deep beams. This thesis investigates the validity of the current ACI, CSA and CEB-FIP code provisions on the shear strength of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams by comparing them with the shear strength equations proposed by Hong et al. The comparison shows that all of these code provisions provide reasonable estimates on the shear strength of concrete deep beam members and the selection of an internal truss model plays an important role on the estimation of shear strength.

  • Recently, many design standards recommend the use of a strut-tie model approach for design of structural concrete with D-region(s). However, since the design standards of the conventional strut-tie model approaches are suggested on the assumption of using a determinate strut-tie model, it is difficult to apply an indeterminate strut-tie model in the design of continuous deep beams. In this study, an indeterminate strut-tie model for continuous deep beams is proposed to resolve the problem, and the ultimate strengths of 35 continuous deep beams tested to failure are evaluated for the validity check of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie model. The analytical results by the proposed model are compared with those by the conventional approaches of ACI 318-99 and ACI 318-05.

  • Four series of fiber reinforced concrete deep beams without shear reinforcement were tested to determine their cracking shear strengths and ultimate shear capacities. Results of tests on 20 reinforced concrete deep beams (including 16 containing steel fibers) are reported. Three parameters were varied in the study, namely, the concrete compressive strength, volume fraction of fibers, and the shear span to depth ratio. The effects of fiber incorporation on failure modes, deflections. strains, cracking shear strength, and ultimate shear strength have been examined. Resistance to shear stresses have been found to be improved by the inclusion of fibers. Based on these investigations, a method of computing the shear stress of steel fiber reinforced concrete deep beam is suggested. The comparisons between computed values and experimentally observed values are shown to validate the proposed theoretical treatment.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the relationship of the shear behavior and the variety of width, depth and location of an opening in reinforced concrete deep beams with rectangular web openings, and to present an improved shear strength equation of those members. The main parameters considered were concrete strength(fck), shear span-to-overall depth ratio(a/h), and the size and vortical position of the web openings. Twenty five deep beams were tested under two symmetric loading-points. Test results showed that the shear behavior of deep beams with web openings was influenced by a/h and the size of opening. In addition, the KCI shear design provision is a tendency to be more unconservative according to the increase in a/h and the area-ratio of opening to shear span(Ao/Ash). Based on the concrete strut action of top and bottom member of an opening and the tie action of longitudinal reinforcement, a proper design equation which closely predicts the capacity of deep beams with rectangular openings is developed.
