Since electrical resistivity of concrete can be measured in a more rapid and simple way than chloride diffusivity, it should be primarily regular quality control of the electrical resistivity of concrete which provides the basis for indirect of quality control of chloride diffusivity during concrete construction. If this is realized, the electrical resistivity of concrete can be a crucial parameter to establish maintenance strategy for marine concrete structures. The purpose of this study is to develop, design and test a surface electrical resistivity measurement protocol. Microstructural affecting factors such as capillary water, porosity, tourtousity, and so on, on the electrical resistivity of concrete were examined taking into account for mixing proportion properties, and hydration stage. This study can provide a non-destructive approach for durability design of marine concrete. From the relationship between electrical resistivity and chloride diffusivity, it is expected that the result is subsequently used as a calibration curve for an indirect control of the chloride diffusivity based on regular measurements of the electrical resistivity during concrete construction.
In a hardened concrete, diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide, aggressive ions, and moisture from the environment to the concrete takes place through the pore network. It is well known that making dense cement matrix enhances the durability of concrete as well as all the characteristics including strength of concrete. In this paper,9 mix concretes with water to cementitious material ratio (40,45, and $50\%$) and replacement ratio of GGBFS (40 and $60\%$ of cement by weight) were studied on the micro-pore structure by mercury intrusion porosimetry and the accelerated chloride diffusion test by potential difference. From the results the average pore diameter and accelerated chloride diffusivity of concrete were ordered NPC > G4C > G6C. It is concluded that there is a good correlation between the average pore diameter and the chloride diffusivity, and the mineral admixtures has a filling effect, which increases the tortuosity of pore and makes large pores finer, on the pore structure of cement matrix due to the latent hydraulic reaction with hydrates of cement.

Factors causing deterioration of concrete structures under marine environment are various, especially penetration and diffusion of chloride ion, carbon dioxide, and water through pore effects on the durability of concrete as well as mechanical properties of concrete. Pore of porous materials like concrete can be classified as micro-, meso-, and macro-pore. And pore of cement matrix is classified as pore which occupied by water, air void, and ITZ between cement paste and aggregates. In this study, to verify the relationship between pore of cement matrix and the property of chloride ion diffusivity, the regression analysis is producted. From the result of regression analysis, the average pore diameter more than total pore volume effects on the diffusivity of chloride ion.
In the present paper, a numerical simulation method based on mesoscopic composite structure of concrete, the truss network model, is developed to evaluate the diffusivity of concrete in order to account for the microstructure of concrete, the binding effect of chloride ions and the chloride concentration dependence. In the model, concrete is described as a three-phase composite, consisting of mortar, coarse aggregates and the interfacial transition zones (ITZs) between them. The advantage of the current model is that it can easily represent the movement of mass (e.g. water or chloride ions) through ITZs or the potential cracks within concrete. An analytical method to estimate the chloride diffusivity of mortar and ITZ, which are both treated as homogenious materials in the model, is introduced in terms of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) and sand volume fraction. Using the newly developed approaches, the effect of cracking of concrete on chloride diffusion is reflected by means of the similar process as that in the test. The results of calculation give close match with experimental observations. Furthermore, with consideration of the binding capacity of chloride ions to cement paste and the concentration dependence for diffusivity, the one-dimensional nonlinear diffusion equation is established, as well as its finite difference form in terms of the truss network model. A series of numerical analysises performed on the model find that the chloride diffusion is substantially influenced by the binding capacity and concentration dependence, which is same as that revealed in some experimental investigations. This indicates the necessity to take into account the binding capacity and chloride concentration dependence in the durability analysis and service life prediction of concrete structures.

This paper investigated the apparent chloride diffusivity of various concretes. Ten mixtures of concrete were initially prepared and tested to estimate diffusion property. The penetration depth and concentration of chloride ion were examined at the same water-binder ration. The binders were composed of normal portland cement, fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and silica fume. From the results, it was concluded that using the mineral admixtures had a filling effect on the pore structure of cements matrix due to those pozzoanic reaction with the hydrates of cement, which increases the tortuosity of pore and makes large pore finer. And diffusivity of chloride is following: NPC100 > F10N90 > F30N70 > F20N80 > F20S05 > G30N70 > F10S05 > G30S05 > G30F15 > G50N50.
Adaptive schemes are constructed in this paper for modeling the effective chloride diffusion coefficient of cement-based materials (paste and concrete). Based on the polarization approximations for the effective conductivity of isotropic multicomponent materials, we develop some fitting procedures to include more information about the materials, to improve the accuracy of the scheme. The variable reference parameter of the approximation involves a few free scalars, which are determined through the available numerical or experimental values of the macroscopic chloride diffusion coefficient of cement paste or concrete at some volume proportions of the component materials. The various factors that affect the chloride diffusivity of cement-based material (porous material structure, uncertainty of value of the chloride diffusion coefficient in water-saturated pore spaces, etc.) may be accounted to make the predictions more accurate. Illustrations of applications are provided in a number of examples to show the usefulness of the approach.

Recently, it is increasingly reported that the deterioration of concrete structure under marine environments is due to diffusion and penetration of chloride ions. It is very important to estimate the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion in concrete. Estimation methods of chloride diffusivity by concentration difference is time-consuming. Therefore, chloride diffusivity of concrete is mainly conducted by electrically accelerated method, which is accelerating the movement of chloride ion by potential difference. However, there has not been any proper method for field quality control to closely determine the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion through accelerated tests using potential difference. In this paper, the various test methods for determination of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete were investigated through comparison accelerated tests. From the results of estimated diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, relationship between the ponding test and acceleration test was examined.

The recycling of demolished concrete as an alternative source of coarse aggregates for the production of new concrete can help to solve the growing waste disposal crisis and the problem of the depletion of natural aggregates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the chloride migration of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials by the chloride migration coefficient. The specimens were made with recycled coarse aggregate at various replacement ratios (10, 30, 50%) and metakaolin, blast furnace slag, and fly ash is replaced for recycled concrete with a mixing ratio of 20%. The major results are as follows. 1) The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing pozzolanic materials increases as the curing age and chloride diffusivity decreases. 2) When the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate is 30%, the chloride migration coefficient of recycled concrete containing blast furnace slag or metakaolin that shows a value similar to or lower than that of plain concrete at all ages.
Currently, most of the investigations on chloride diffusion were based on the experiments and simulations concerning single cation type chlorides. Chloride diffusion associated with dual or multi cation types was rarely studied. In this paper, several groups of diffusion experiments are conducted using chloride solutions containing single, dual and multi cation types. A multi-ionic model is also proposed to simulate the chloride diffusion behavior in the experimental tests. The MATLAB software is used to numerically solve the nonlinear PDEs in the multi-ionic model. The experimental and simulated results show that the chloride diffusion behavior associated with different cation types is significantly different. When the single cation type chlorides are adopted, it is found that the bound rates of chloride ions combined with divalent cations are greater than those combined with monovalent cations. When the dual/multi cation type chlorides are adopted, the chloride bound rates increase with the $Ca^{2+}/Mg^{2+}$ percentage in the source solutions. This evidence indicates that the divalent cations would markedly enhance the chloride binding capacity and reduce the chloride diffusivity. Moreover, on the basis of the analysis, it is also found that the complicated cation types in source solutions are beneficial to reducing the chloride diffusivity.
