  • In this study, the flexural behavior of high strength concrete members with different curing condition of 90 MPa of compressive strength was investigated. Experimental parameters included normal and low temperature curing conditions, tensile steel amount and concrete compressive strength. 8 beam members were fabricated and flexural tests were carried out. Crack spacing, load-deflection relation, load-strain relation and ductility index were determined. Experimental results show that as the amount of rebar increases, the number of cracks increases and the crack spacing decreases. The higher the concrete strength, the smaller the number of cracks, but the effect is significantly smaller than the amount of rebar. As a result of comparison with the proposed average crack spacing in the design criteria, the experimental results are slightly larger than the results of the proposed formula, but the proposed formula does not reflect the concrete strength and curing conditions. The ductility index of normal temperature cured members was 3.36~6.74 and the ductility index of low temperature cured members was 1.51~2.82. The behavior of low temperature cured members was found to be lower than that of normal temperature cured members. As a result of comparing the ductility index with the existing studies similar to the experimental members, the ductility index of the high strength concrete member was larger than the ductility index of the ordinary strength concrete of the previous study. Further research is needed to understand more specific results.

  • This paper examines the flexural behavior of full-scale prestressed concrete girders that were constructed of steel fiber reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). This study is designed to provide more information about the bending characteristics of UHPC girders in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance and deflection for future structural design codes. Short steel fibers have been introduced into prestressed concrete T-girders in order to study their effects under flexural loads. Round straight high strength steel fibers were used at volume fraction of 2%. The girders were cast using 150~190 MPa steel fiber reinforced UHPC and were designed to assess the ability of steel fiber reinforced UHPC to carry flexural loads in prestressed girders. The experimental results show that steel fiber reinforced UHPC enhances the cracking behavior and ductility of beams. Moreover, when ultimate failure did occur, the failure of girders composed of steel fiber reinforced UHPC was observed to be precipitated by the pullout of steel fibers that were bridging tension cracks in the concrete. Flexural failure of girders occurred when the UHPC at a particular cross section began to lose tensile capacity due to steel fiber pullout. In addition, it was determined that the level of prestressing force influenced the ultimate load capacity.

  • To fundamentally solve the problem of deterioration of concrete structures, it has been researched that the high durable concrete structure reinforced with the FRP rebar can be one of major solution to the newly-developed concrete structure. FRP rebar has lots of advantages such as non-corrosive, high performance and light weight against the conventional steel rebar. Among these kinds of FRP rebars, GFRP rebar has usually been considered as the best reinforcement because of its economic point of view. Even though the material capacity of the GFRP rebar was already investigated, there are some problems such as low modulus of elastic that will be cause for degrade of the serviceability of flexural concrete member reinforced with the GFRP rebar. Thus, the deflection characteristics of the GFRP rebar reinforced concrete structure should be considered then investigated. In this study, ACI 440 guideline (2003), ISIS Canada Design Manual (2001) and Toutanji et al. (2000) was considered for predicting the moment of inertia of the concrete beam reinforced with the GFRP rebar. And it was also evaluated that load-deflection relationship had a good accordance with the test and analysis result. In the result of this study, it could be estimated that the load-deflection relationship using the suggested equation of moment of inertia in this study indicated better accordance with the test result than that of the others until failure.

  • This paper compares the fatigue behaviors of concretes subjected to flexural and split-tensional loadings, and proposes the fatigue reliability models based on experimental results and reliability analysis. The fatigue tests were performed for the specimens of $150 mm{\times}75 mm$ split tensional cylinders and $150 mm{\times}150 mm{\times}550 mm$ flexural beams under constant loadings at three levels (70, 80 and $90\%$) with 0.1 stress ratio, 20 Hz loading speed and sine wave. The reliability analysis on fatigue data was based on Weibull distribution of two-parameters. From fatigue test results, two criteria were proposed to reject the experimental fatigue data because of statistical variation of concrete fatigue data. Two parameters ($\alpha$and u) of Weibull distribution were obtained using graphical method, moment method and maximum likelihood method. The probability density function(P.D.F) and cumulative distribution function(C.D.F) of the Weibull distribution for fatigue life of pavement concrete were derived for various stress levels using parameters, $\alpha$ and u. The goodness-of-fit test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was acceptable at $5\%$ level of significance. Based on reliability analysis, a fatigue model for pavement concrete was proposed and compared from existing models.

  • Post-tensioned Precast concrete System(PPS) consists of U-shaped precast wide beams and concrete column. The continuity of beam-column joint is provided with floor concrete cast on the PC shell beam and post-tensioning. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the response of PPS interior beam-column joint subjected to cyclic lateral loading. To this end, an experimental investigation was performed with three half-scale specimens of interior connection. The design parameters are the amount of beam reinforcement placed inside the joint core. The test results showed that cracks were distributed well without my significant degradation of strength and ductility. Also, it was found that the prestressing may affect to alter the torsional crack angle. And the specimens sufficiently resist up to limiting drift ratio of 0.035 in accordance with the provisional by ACl of acceptance criteria for concrete special moment frames.

  • In this study, the flexural/shear behavior characteristics of perfobond FRP-concrete composite beams using an FRP plate with perforated webs as formwork and reinforcement are analyzed through an analytical method. Compared with the existing experimental results, we have proved its usefulness and use it in future practice. When the nonlinearity is very large in this case, the nonlinear finite element analysis by an explicit method will be effective. The concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model adopted in this study is considered to be able to adequately simulate the nonlinear behavior of concrete, and the determination of several variable factors required in the model is compared with the experimental results and values used in the study. This recommendation will require review and adjustment for more diverse cases. The effect of the perfobond of the composite beam with perforated web is considered to be somewhat effective in terms of securing the initial stiffness, but in the case of the apex, it is considered that the cross-sectional loss and the effect of improving the bonding force should be properly arranged. The contact problem, such as slipping of the FRP plate and concrete, is considered to be one of the reasons that the initial stiffness is slightly larger than the test result, and the slightly difference from the experimental results is attributed to the separation problem between concrete and FRP after the peak.

  • The near surface mounted (NSM) FRP strengthening method has been conventionally applied for strengthening the deteriorated concrete structures. The NSM strengthening method, however, has been issued with the problem of limitation of the cutting depth which is usually considered as concrete cover depth. This may be related with degradation of bonding performance in long-term service state. To improve the debonding problem, in this study, the Stirrup partial-cutting NSM (SCNSM) strengthening method using CFRP plate was newly developed. SCNSM strengthening method can be effectively applied to the deteriorated concrete structure without any troubles of insufficient cutting depth. To experimentally verify the structural behavior, the flexural test of the concrete beam by using the SCNSM strengthening method was conducted with the test variable as the strengthening length (32%, 48%, 70%, 80%, 96% of span length). In the result of the test, the NSM and SCNSM strengthened specimen showed similar structural behavior with load-deflection, mode of failure. Additionally, there was no apparent structural degradation by the stirrup partial-cutting. Consequently, it was evaluated that the SCNSM strengthening method can be useful for seriously damaged concrete structures that is hard to apply the conventional NSM strengthening method for increasing the structural capacity.

  • This research was planned to evaluate the structural performance of post tensioned(PT) concrete member subjected to fire. Prime objective was to suggest some techniques to evaluate the performance of post tensioned concrete beam and slab exposed to high temperature through experiment. To accomplish this objective, the following two scopes have been proceeded to verify the strength reducing ratio of strands and find out the difference of resisting force at the PT concrete members exposed to high temperature through the fire test. The properties of prestressing steel(tendon) in PT concrete beam and slab under variable temperatures were reviewed. The test of this study was shown that stress relaxation occurred at high temperature, and some restoration of tensional force appeared as it got cooling down. The residual tension of the post tensioned beams at 4 hours after reaching the target temperature were 70% at $400^{\circ}C$, 10% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 2% at $800^{\circ}C$. The post tensioned slabs were 94% at $400^{\circ}C$, 84.5% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 62% at $800^{\circ}C$. The reason why the residual tension loss of the post tensioned slab was relatively small was considered to be that the slab was exposed just one side to high temperature and the strength of the strand was restored larger than that of beam. Also, it was confirmed that the post tensioned member inevitably experienced the loss of strength by fire damage, and restoration design of the member should be required to compensate for the value as much as lost strength.

  • This study was performed to prove the possibility of utilizing short plastic fibers made for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) as a structural material. In order to verify the capacity of RPET fiber, it was compared with polypropylene (PP) fiber, most widely used short synthetic fiber, for fiber volume fraction of 0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%. To measure material properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, appropriate tests were performed. Also, to measure the strength and ductility capacities of reinforced concrete (RC) member casted with RPET fiber added concrete, flexural test was performed on RC beams. The results showed that compressive strength decreased, as fiber volume fraction increased. These trends are similarly observed in the tests of PP fiber added concrete specimens. Split cylinder tensile strength of RPET fiber reinforced concrete increased slightly as fiber volume fraction increased. For structural member performance, ultimate strength, relative ductility and energy absorption of RPET added RC beam are significantly larger than OPC specimen. Also, the results showed that ultimate flexural strength and ductility both increased, as fiber volume fraction increased. These trends are similarly observed in the tests of PP fiber added concrete specimens. The study results indicate that RPET fiber can be used as an effective additional reinforcing material in concrete members.

  • The yield strength of shear reinforcement is restricted in the present design codes. In this study, the possibility of the yield strength increase in shear reinforcement is evaluated according to ACI318-08, EC2-02 and CSA-04 by comparing the experimental and calculated results. Three cases were used to analyze the shear strength of the beam. One had no limitation in the yield strength of shear reinforcement, another had restriction on the yield strength of shear reinforcement, and the other had a restriction on the yield strength of shear reinforcement and the shear reinforcement ratio. The study results showed that the case with unlimited shear reinforcement yield strength predicted the test result better than other two cases. Even though the rebar yield strength higher than the strength required in present code was applied to existing shear design equation, the result was reasonable. Therefore, the design equation seemed to be appropriate even if the high-strength shear reinforcement is used in practice based on the existing shear design method.
