  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to assess removal efficiency of non-point pollutants and applicability for non-point pollutant reduction facilities by conducting the demonstration project operation. METHODS : In order to analyze removal efficiency of non-point pollutants for facilities such as a grassed swale, a small constructed wetland, a free water surface wetland, a horizontal sub-surface flow wetland, and a sand filtration, the field data including specifications of facilities, rainfall, inflow and runoff rainfall effluent etc. was acquired after occurring rainfall events, and the acquired data was analyzed for removal efficiency rate to assess road non-point pollutants facilities using event mean concentration (EMC) and summation of load (SOL) methods. RESULTS : The results of analyzing rainfall effluent, non-point pollutant sources showed that total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chrome (Cr), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) can be removed through non-point pollutant reduction facilities by 60.3% ~ 100%. Especially removal efficiency of TSS, COD and BOD is relatively higher than removal efficiency of other non-point pollutant sources in all kind of non-point pollutant facilities. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result of this study, even though natural type of non-point pollutant reduction facilities for roads occupy small areas comparing with drainage basin areas, most of non-point pollutant sources would be removed through the facilities.

  • Cloud-point and bubble-point curves for poly(ethylene-co-13.8 mol% octene) ($PEO_{13.8}$) and Poly(ethylene-co-15.3 mol% octene) ($PEO_{15.3}$) were determined up to $150^{\circ}C$ and 450 bar in hydrocarbons which have different molecular size and structure. Whereas ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-pentane) system has cloud-point and bubble-point type transitions, ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-propane) and ($PEO_{15.3}$+ n-butane) systems do only cloud-point type transition. In cyclo-pentane, -hexane, -heptane, and -octane, $PEO_{15.3}$ has a bubble-point transition. ($PEO_{13.8}$+ n-butane) mixture has a critical mixture concentration at 5 wt% PEO. (PEO + hydrocarbon) mixtures exhibit LCST type behavior. Solubility of PEO increases with hydrocarbon size due to increasing dispersion interaction which is favorable to dissolve PEO.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the characteristics and pollutant loadings of non-point pollutants that flowed in the streams on precipitation for pollutant loading reduction of Hwa-sung lake inflow streams. Although it has been made an effort to improve the water quality of Hwa-sung basin through the strategies for the preservation of water quality, it is shown that the water quality is not greatly improved. Because it has been industrialized and urbanized near Hwa-sung basin so that it is difficult to reduce the water pollution due to the increase in pollutant loadings of point and non-point sources. In this study, it is investigated the outflow characteristics of non-point pollutants that discharged with storm runoff and estimated the effect of runoff on Hwa-sung basin. The final goal of this study is to utilize the basic information for proper management and strategies of non-point sources on Hwa-sung basin. At the result of inflow streams, Ja-an stream that has the greatest pollutant loadings on precipitation is strongly influenced on the water quantity of Hwa-sung basin. On the other hand, it is shown that Nam-yang stream is strongly influenced on the SS concentration of Hwasung basin among them. Also, all streams; Nam-yang, Ja-ahn, Ah-eun stream; has the degree of slope more than or near 1 in the correlation results so that they have strong pollutant loading impact and the concentration of SS is the highest among other pollutants. So, specific studies on initial rain phenomena are more necessary to manage the pollutants economically. Also, the proper control of SS concentration is required to manage the effluent pollutants effectively on precipitation. So, it is necessary to consider the strategies for non-point pollutants as well as point pollutants when the new management is imposed to reduce the pollutant load for improvement of Hwa-sung basin.

  • This research was conducted to elucidate the optimum conditions for the antibacterial activity of konjak jelly using the evolutionary operation-factorial design technique. In the first set of experiments, concentration of a coagulation agent, soaking liquid, and temperature of water were set to 0.4%, $0.6{\times}10^{-2}N$, and $65^{\circ}C$ as a central point, respectively. The highest antibacterial activity was acquired at E21, in which the number of bacteria was 1.25 log cfu/g. Because the code of changes in the main effect was (-), it could be decided that the central point of the first set was not the optimum point. Although antibacterial activity in the second set was improved, the values of the main effect were higher than that of changes in the mean effect. The central point of third set was concentration of coagulation agent 0.8%, concentration of soaking liquid $1.0{\times}10^{-2}N$, and temperature of water $65^{\circ}C$. It was found that the antibacterial activity of central point in the third set was highest among all the tested set. Further, all the necessary conditions were appropriate to reach the optimum condition. The antibacterial activity of the central point in third set was more than 1,000 times higher than that of E11, in first set.

  • The Doam Lake watershed has a significant impact on the downstream water system due to nutrients and sediment outflow during rainfall caused by steep slopes, soil losses, and fertilization. These non-point sources are unclear in the discharge area and are affected by land use patterns, soil characteristics, and topographical features of the watershed. Therefore, this study conducted rainfall monitoring from July to October 2019 in Songcheon upstream of the Doam Lake watershed, one of the non-point pollution source management areas. Then, after analyzing rainfall runoff, Event Mean Concentration (EMC) and Mass First Flush ratio (MFFn) were calculated to compare and analyze the characteristics of rainfall and the non-point pollutant discharge. As a result of the analysis, it showed various non-point pollutant emission characteristics for each rainfall event. In addition, the concentration of EMC and the MFFn were affected by the average rainfall intensity and the maximum rainfall intensity, and were not significantly affected by the number of antecedent drying days. In the future, it is expected that effective non-point source reduction measures and management measures according to rainfall intensity through continuous monitoring and analysis will be needed.

  • In this study, water quality data of eight main sites in the Geumho River watershed were collected and analyzed for long-term changes in water quality over the period from 2005 to 2015. The results showed that BOD concentration was gradually improved by the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), stages 1 and 2. Recently, a tendency of increasing BOD concentration was observed in the downstream section of the river. The concentration of COD was analyzed to be contaminated throughout the water system regardless of the water quality improvement project, and the TN concentration tended to increase in the midstream of the river from 2013. The TP concentration has clearly decreased from 2012 after the second stage of TMDL. For the statistical analysis of PCA ordination, monthly water qualities (pH, DO, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Water Temperature (WT), BOD, COD, TN, TP, TOC, and SS) and flow rate data for 5 years from 2012 to 2016 were used. Seasonally the Geumho River showed an increase in the TN concentration at point sources during the dry season (December to February). TP showed the effect of non-point sources in the summer, because rainfall has caused a rise in flow rate in the upstream. Besides, the origin of pollution source was changed from non-point sources with BOD, COD, and TOC.

  • This study evaluated the rainfall-runoff characteristics of Non-point Pollution Source (NPS) of the impervious area through on-site monitoring. In this study, trend analysis was performed by various runoff analysis method of non-point pollution source. The characteristics of rainfall at impervious area appeared to be influenced by rainfall strength. It is judged that the measure is required to be prepared against that now that concentration difference of non-point pollution source appeared to be big by precedent number of days of no rainfall. However, it appeared that Rainfall Sustaining Time (RST) has nothing to do with effluent concentration of non-point pollution source, however, the rising tendency that effluent concentration did not appear because the tendency that concentration of non-point pollution source reduces more than 50% within initial 60 min due to first flushing effects and rainfall sustaining time is long. If looking into the outflow tendency of non-point pollution source at the impervious area, it showed the tendency that the concentration lowers gradually as time goes by after initial concentration appeared very high. However, it could be recognized that the concentration of non-point pollution source appeared to be high as the pollutants integrated on the surface of the road during dry season. The Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs) in impervious area were ranged $9.2{\sim}199.3mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for TSS, $8.1{\sim}24.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for $COD_{Mn}$, $0.070{\sim}1.860mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for T-N. Based on such runoff characteristics of non-point pollution source, it is judged that it would be desirable to process initial rain efficiently as the measure against initial rain phenomenon at the impervious area.

  • Nowadays, the importance of non-point source pollution treatment is being emphasized. Especially, the easy runoff characteristic of highly concentrated pollutants in the roads makes the circumstance more complicated due to impermeability of roads. When the pollutants flow into steam it could make water quality in stream worse and it also causes a bad influence in the aquatic ecosystem because the effluents of rainfall-runoff may contain indecomposable materials like oil and heavy metals. Therefore, we tried to figure out the property of non-point source pollution when it is raining and carried out an assessment for the property of runoff for non-point source pollution and EMC (Event Mean Concentrations) of the essential pollutants during this study. As the result of the study, the EMC was BOD 5.2~21.7 mg/L, COD 7.5~35.4 mg/L, TSS 71.5~466.1 mg/L, T-N 0.682~1.789 mg/L and T-P 0.174~0.378 mg/L, respectively. The decreasing rate of non-point pollutant in Chungyang-Hongsung road indicates the maximum decrease of 80% until 5 mm of rainfall based on SS concentration; by the rainy time within 20~30 minutes, the decreasing rate of SS concentration was shown as 88.0~97.6%. Therefore it was concluded that it seems to be possibly control non-point pollutants if we install equipments to treat non-point pollutants with holding capacity of 30 min. It is supposed that the result of this study could be used for non-point pollutants treatment of roads in Chungyang-Hongsung area. We also want to systematically study and consistently prepare the efficient management of runoff from non-point source pollution and pollutant loading because the characteristics of non-point source pollution runoff changes depending on different characteristics and situations of roads and rainfall.

  • In this study CALPUFF modeling was performed to predict a contribution of a separate single point pollutant source as well as of total point pollutant sources of major synthetic fiber manufacturers in Gumi national industrial complex to atmospheric trimethylamine concentration of the same area. In addition, a contribution of the separate single point pollution source to the atmospheric trimethylamine concentration of the same area was estimated relatively to the total point pollutant sources. As a result of the CALPUFF modeling, the maximum atmospheric concentration of trimethylamine in Gumi national industrial complex was appeared upon improving T company emission facility frequently in complex 3 in winter (January) and spring (April) while frequently in complex 1 in summer (July) and autumn (October). Besides, the predicted range of the maximum atmospheric concentration of trimethylamine in complex 1 was improved upon improving its emission facility. However, even though in complex 3 the upper bound of the predicted maximum atmospheric concentrations of trimethylamine was increased upon improving T company emission facility, the predicted value of their second upper bound below the upper bound was very similar to the upper bound of measured atmospheric trimethylamine concentrations in Gumi prior to improving its emission facility. Thus, the effect of improving T company emission facility was estimated huge in complex 1 while it was trivial in complex 3. These maximum concentrations of trimethylamine predicted to estimate the expected contribution of total point pollutant sources by CALPUFF modeling showed the similar values to those measured in the region of Gumi. Therefore, the expected contribution of total point pollutant sources to atmospheric trimethylamine concentration in the area of Gumi was validated.
